So I was wondering, whats the best way to thin tamiya paints? I was talking to another customizer who said that tamiya are more for air brushing.. unfortunately i dont have an airbrush. and i have a lot of tamiya paints.

And i needed to thin them down to get a better even coat. I was told not to use water with it.
Also i have isopropnyl 70% alcohol. woudl that work as a thinner?

Also, what are good approximations for thinning proportions. for say backwashing the figure

and say for normal coats of color.

how much thinning solution to paint proportion?

Ive never had to thin tamiya paints for anything, they are thin enough for even coats i think, its more to do with your application of them rather than how thin the paint is.

They do however make their own acrylic thinner so you can use that, im not sure is alcohol would work.

For black washing i beleive you mix the paint 2 parts water to 1 part paint but i cant remember (it might be the other way around). Just add tiny bits of water until you get a consistency like milk for example and then try it out.

 

I was told to use demineralised water to thin acrylics. A great source for that is the tumble dryer. I have one that collects all the water in a separate tank.

 

You can get distilled water at most supermarkets for about a $1 a gallon

 

distilled water is ok?
What about alcohol?

 

In a mixing jar I use an ear & eye medicine dropper, and 5-10 drops of Tamiya's thinner depending on the amount of paint being used

 

I use a pipet to draw my tamiya paint out of the jar into a seperate mixing jar. I then add alcohol to get the right consistancy, I don't really have an exact ratio that I use.

I will say that since I started thinning the Tamiya paints down, the go on MUCH smoother when using a brush. You just have to give it three coats to cover it, but it looks much better than one thick coat.
