After pricing up a sample at the local printshop I decided to do my own test and ebay came to the rescue with a nicely priced set of 5 A4 transparent sheets.
    Now the wait begins!

    Update time!
Test print 1: apart from a curled corner blebbing one of the big symbols, a little misalignment, the Ratchet door decals coming out waaaaay too tiny (They are clearly not 3cm wide there, buy a ruler GIMP) and that they aren't quite a pure black, as a first experiment they didn't look too shabby...

Application was a bit of a mixed bag. In the process of getting them on it does seem, as I also feared, DTP'ed decals do have durability issues.
I managed to wear Oil Slick's Tramp Stamp whilst aligning and applying it. Poorly evening lit phone pic but it gives the gist.

Individual shots of Test Print 1 applied:

Starting with Oil Slick's worn tramp stamp...

Chopsaw's hardly visible hunchback, Fracture's fairly fine forearm.

Lugnutz who's since had a replacement, as I realised I'd worn his banner off after taking this one.

Finally, the worst affected and best affected by background colour.

Thanks to TFW UK thread member Robotochan for advising I look at the DPI, I then tried upping the DPI for the second attempt but went too high which meant there wasn't much visible difference but, having drafted a former graphic designer and housewife superstar (me Mum) for advice and her better printer, she spotted I'd gone too high (and taught me that the industry standard for printwork, in her time in the catalogue industry at least, was 300 DPI) and suggested printing from a Photoshop file rather than a PNG. So we did both.
The result is Print Test III and just look at dem test applications!

(I know what you're thinking, yes, I did re-apply and centre Lugnutz's pec tatt better after that pic.)

Yes, the colours are still pretty semi-transparent but look at dat Black tho! I've come to realise why some of the clear-backed Reprolabel sets have a base white under the colours (and why Roadbuster's sticker sheet was a big fail on the Wreckers symbol front).

Lesson also learnt: Printers (in general as a standard) do not do white. Looks like I'll need some white sticky back vinyl for CW Ratchet's additional details. Might look at something more expansive than just some door signs in that case.

Seeing as how the British Summer weather put the kibosh on my planned afternoon constitutional, there's been new stickers all round for the gang (apart from Megs/Immortron, who gets used/older (by a few hours) stickers as they look great on him).

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Fracture's forearm looks a lot fresher, Chopsaw gets a more shoulderblade-style Hunch tatt plus a Gas tank patch for bike mode, and Oil Slick a neater Tramp Stamp.

Fracture also got a Transformation test to see if there were any potential rub points or sticker chewing components.

Sawboss got a fresher look himself, and his boss' battle van mode got some additional decoration.

    [IMG] [IMG]

And the boss' boss got his distressed look tweaked...

Very happy with this little experiment's results. Still curious about what a laser printer could do for me but that may have to wait for a time, depending on how soon Fort Max drops.

Who, these turned out pretty darn good. Loving Fracture there too and that pose. :D

May have to start playing around with this idea too.

Pure coincidence. It just happened that I couldn't think of a big enough bike bot to be a boss, so Megs-as-a-Mad-Max-truck fit the bill for a Cybertronian Immortan Joe-type leader figure.
