Just wondering if its ok to put enamel paint over an acrylic primer and vice versa? I want to paint clear red over metallic silver to get metallic red. Ive always used enamel paints but see a lot of people using acrylic so I want to try some (plus I cant find the clear I want in enamel). I have quite a few tins of enamel paint and I want to keep using them, without having to buy different primers & undercoats
You shouldn't mix the paints together, of course, but you can certainly apply a coat of one over a coat of the other... I've been studying airbrushing and weathering techniques here in Japan for a couple of years now. Professional Japanese modelers usually use lacquers to apply the base colors, enamels for secondary colors (stripes, markings etc.) and acrylics for weathering, panel-lining, and drybrushing. Acrylic thinners won't damage the enamel layers, and enamel thinners won't damage the lacquer layers under that. It's imminently practical.
cool, thanks for the info, will save me a little bit of money...hopefully the KO FOC OS Optimus I bought should look good all painted up, the red plastic looks really cheap, the blue is ok but if the repainted red part goes ok I will try the blue parts
