I'm thinking of repainting a Combiner Wars Streetwise in to G2 Sideswipe. I have some paint markers, I know there not the the best to use but I've done so decent work with them before. I picked Streetwise because I think the head is about right.

I would take apart the figure and spray the main sections black, possibly the head and hands in red too. then use paintpens to add detail after.

I was going to take it apart anyway. What's a good kind of spray to use?

Is he going to need to prime the figure, or is there primer mixed in with that paint?

Here's how I would do it

    Dismantle

Paint/Spray everything you want in black, in black. If you can't spray, Vallejo primers can be brushed on. Shake them up though.

Paint/Spray everything you want red, in gray or red primer. Then paint the gray over in red if you used a gray primer.

Paint/Spray everything you want in white, with a white primer.

I used 2:1 Yellow to Blue for something close to G2 Swipe Green. Mask the headlights off with Tamiya masking tape and paint away.

Use whatever colors you want for detailing. Usually white and silver are good for G2 swipe.

Only issue would be the text on the spoiler and doors. That... I have no idea how to get done :(

Top coat when done, your call for gloss or flat. I like gloss on G2 swipe.

I'm not sure I'm going to need any primer and I picked Streetwise because he's already white-ish. I know I'm going to have to take it apart and use rubbing alcohol to get the police decos off and get the red off the arms. The lower torso and upper legs will go unpainted on this project. Right now I have no plans on adding any of the green details my self. I may try to do the headlight in green or maybe that thing on the front... I wish I could do a digibash before I get started...

So I went to Michael's and picked up some spray paints. I tested then on some extra 5mm guns. It seems like it goes on thick, and it did not seem to cure too well. They have a stickiness the them...

The brand I got is Testors, the Michaels and both Wal-Mars here only have the one brand and their selections are limited. I may go back to my origenal plan of useing the paint pens I got from work...

Krylon Fusion (mentioned earlier) and Krylon Color Maxxx are my go-to's. They cover nicely, are insanely durable if let to cure for a few days, and are pretty vibrant if being used as a primary color.
There's also Krylon Shortcuts. They're smaller cans of spray, but the colors are nearly perfect and go on thin. The only issue I've had with them is that I had to spray a small matte coat over the Shortcut paint to prevent it rubbing off a little bit on my fingers.

They're all available at Walmart, actually. I'm guessing they'd be available on their online site as well.

I'm a big fan of dismantling and spraying, though you can get the same effect with judicious use of painters tape.

I find priming to be generally unnecessary, especially with a heavy color like black. Give him a light sanding to help the paint stick. You will probably want to avoid painting ball joints or parts that rub/tab together. If you must paint these parts, be sure

My paint of choice is rust-o-leum painter's touch, although the Ace Hardware store brand is also seriously great, even though it's not rated for plastic. Goes down smooth and is very resilient. I find the krylon fusion I used on some early customs to be not so durable.

I used to dislike priming, many ages ago, but I've learned to swear by it. At one point, I was painting miniatures without primer, and not a single one survived without paint chips or even a complete breakdown.
I've learned over the years that giving the pieces a nice warm bath with dish soap to remove any and all grease/mold release, then applying a smooth primer coat is almost cathartic. Going from resin pieces to retail plastic is surprisingly the same as far as prep work goes.

Really? I've honestly never had Fusion chip or scratch. I always prep the pieces first in the soap solution, then prime and let set for a few days or more. Works like a charm.

I'll have my extra Streetwise today. I may hold off on working on him until after Mrs. Smitty leaves.

Because you are going black. I would dismantle and dye it. Purchase industrial strength rite dye from their website, a used pot from goodwell, a candy thermometer and some acetone. You'll need to practice the amount of acetone temperature and dyeing time but he will be flawlessly black and won't wear off from playing with it. I did it to a MP TRU thundrrcrack just before the Takara release was announced and he looks great.

That sounds costly, and I already spent $40.00 at Michael's on some paint that may not even work.

If some of the paint aren't used (paper seal broken), you can return them.
The paints at Walmart like Fusion and Shortcuts are in the paint/hardware and craft sections respectively. Their 'model' section is nothing but Testors brand and just the basic styles at that.
