Trying to make a custom bot, using the Skyhammer/Drift voyager helicopter. It has a large balljoint(5-6mm) for the head. I had hoped to use Voy. Roadbuster's head, to make a custom Highbrow, but the socket is too small (3-4mm). Does anyone have an idea what other figures I could find a large socket head on? I saw some customs using Energon molds, but I dont have any on hand... thanks for any help
I do headswaps all the time, and for me, there are a few options: 1. My preferred method would be to extract Voyager Roadbuster's ball joint stem and implant that whole part into Drift. You may not have enough depth on the balljoint stem to make a solid connection, so I use a small wire to extend the original balljoint. Then built it up with epoxy. Roadbuster's head sits flat, so that means a short balljoint stem. 2. Implant a larger balljoint socket into Voyager Roadbuster's head. But it is a tiny head, basically a deluxe, so it may not accommodate. For this you need a spare socket that fits, or you can cannibalize Drift's, but you may ruin Drift's head in the process. 3. Find a new balljoint set and implant that whole thing into the Drift's body and Roadbuster's head. This is basically doing option 2, and doing half of option 1, so the same issues apply. 4. Use a standard hardware nut and bolt. Implant the right sized nut into the head, and install the right length bolt through the body of the new figure. Not sure if you can do this with Drift's body. This limits movement to left/right, but makes a strong connection with a nut and bolt. You'll need to be able to cut down the bolt to the right size with a hacksaw, and live with some elevation change of the head as it turns left/right, depending on the thread size, but it may not be noticeable. You can add a little floor polish to the bolt to keep it from turning wildly. 5. Glue the head down. Downside is that the head is fixed (no movement), but sometimes this is the only way!
