I did a quick search and didn't find anything regarding 2000AD (a UK originated comic strip featuring characters like Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Ro-Jaws) so I thought I'd make one.

Anything 2000AD related sound off in here!

Having said that I don't know how many people actually read it, I might be alone there. I've been reading the Judge Dredd Megazine since I started work back in 2000 (kinda ironic) which is over 10 years ago. ZOUNDS. But I never picked up the weekly 2000AD main comic except for the occasional big end of year issue.

Right now Prog 2012 is on sale, basically the last issue of the year is bigger than normal to round off the year with content/stories we can expect in the new year. Its how 2000AD hooked me with Prog 2011, I thought to myself, just another week. Just another month. Just until this story ends. Its been six months? Ah. What? A WHOLE YEAR?

Anyway the Dredd stories have been absolutely stellar this past year, and actually nothing Marvel (which used to be my usual read) has come close in recent years. In fact I think I'll be taking off all Marvel (Ultimates, leaving only DH Conan) titles from my pull list... end of an era really.

Also out recently was the Batman/Judge Dredd crossover TPB compilation which I picked up a few days ago. Bear in mind I have 4 of the 5 stories already when I bought them when they originally came out but I couldn't resist a collective revisit to my childhood 'Judgement on Gotham'.

I really liked Simon Bisleys art back in the day but now view it with completely different eyes, still magnificent but just in a different way.

I grew up reading 2000AD comics but unfortunately for me, the comics that I got were infrequent in nature. I remembered reading the stories on 'Judge Dredd' and 'Flesh'; which IMO were the best strips for the comic.

I only got the Judge Dredd TPBs recently...up to volume 5? I plan to get more when I additional cash...hopefully, I can collect the entire series.

I've got the 'Judge Dredd: The Law in Order' up to volume... 10 I think, and I'm probably calling it quits there, because they take up so much shelf space.

I actually despise the 2000AD TPB model, because when they first started with collections they were all over the place.

They initially released stuff in one format (lets call it ver 1). This stuff was no unifying look, but IIRC they were all the same size.

Then some bright spark decided it would make sense to release everything with a similar look and feel, so peoples collections would feel more unified. The problem was some titles weren't going to be continued, but y'know a small price to pay. (Ver 2) The books were also a little smaller.

Then around 8 or so years ago they changed it again, the book footprint going down a little more. (Lets call this ver 3). Cue me jumping on a couple of titles (like Rogue Trooper) and getting all the stories in one place...

Then a few years ago they decided somehow the current format wasn't that great so they re-released everything under another format...ver 4. WTF man. At least its the same size as ver 3.

This means my ver 3 Rogue Trooper won't be finished, and I don't know which stories are what in Ver 4. It also means that some material has been released 3 or 4 times in the last decade or so (America I'm looking at you), with the stories packed inconsistantly so one version won't gel with another.

    Stupid stupid stupid.

To illustrate, in ver 1 Format I bought Judge Anderson and Chopper: Song of the Surfer. Then they had the switch.

For Ver 2 I bought more Anderson, (some it it reprinted from ver1) Dredd stuff and Judge Death.

Then Version 3 came out where I thought WTF my Ver 2 Necropolis will never be finished. But I bought a load of Rogue Trooper stuff, Shimura and a couple other titles.

Then they bought out ver 4 oh fuck off man. This means my Rogue trooper stuff doesn't match with the new reprints, the new Dredd TPBs (the current ones) have reprint material from my ver 2 books, and although I've picked up ver 4 Anderson Vol 2, I'm missing a couple of short stories because they're included in ver 4 vol 1, but I'm missing it from my ver 1 and ver 2 Anderson stuff. At least my Ballad of Halo Jones, Nemesis the Warlock books are all unified. Kinda.

    My head hurts.

Having said that I'm on the lookout for Anderson Psi files vol 3, which should all be new material. I hope.

As a kid, I found 1 copy of 2000AD and I loved it. I think Dredd is a very cool character. Did you read the first issue of the new Dredd book being done by IDW?

Hmm, honestly I feel that ABC warriors are cool visually but as a story? Meh. I felt they worked best as Nemesis the Warlocks little private army, or even some old stories called Ro-Busters, or something like that. The full on ABC Warriors stories in the last year were all quite weak I felt.

Judge Dredd Incubus was probably the best Dredd crossover to date, not only was it true to form for both franchises it still found the time to add to the Megacity world. Batman/Dredd kinda suffers as Batman is diluted slightly and Dredd comes across as a very one dimensional bully boy.

You should try and pick up 'The best of 2000AD' book, which basically has a load of different 2000AD stories shoved in, some are single progs, others are multiple entries throughout the book for more length. Stuff in there ranges from Harlem Heroes (basketball... with jetpacks), MACH 1 (6 million dollar man) basically a good range to dip your toes into.

Hmm, the back only has UK £££s, maybe it wasn't released in the US...

I used to love 2000AD. I started reading them around prog 400. Somewhat bizarrely, I was never that into Dredd, but I loved Strontium Dogs (the death of Johnny Alpha to be was a bigger deal than the death of Superman), Rogue Trooper, Slaine and the ABC Warriors. There was also an excellent series that only ran twice called Revere which was a bizarre occult thriller (think Clive Barker type stuff) set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

I had actually aquired scans of both Revere books (which are now sadly all out of print, and I did legitimately own them back in the day) but sadly they were wiped when I got my computer fixed and I can't remember where I got them.

The problem with ABC Warriors IMO is that Black Hole was an impossible act to follow and Mills has never managed to find a different enougth take on it since to make it worthwhile again.

I read it in my younger days. Rogue Trooper, Dredd, ABC Warriors, Nemesis. all that awesome black and white artwork was a great tool for learning to ink my own comics. Of all the things I got shot of from my youth I really wish I'd kept my massive stack of those comics.

I've not read an issue in years though. I remember it going all painterly sometime back in the 90s (I think) and I just hated that blobby indistinct artwork.

That was when the UK comics industry was thriving following the US comic boom and just after the early nineties the Judge Dredd Megazine had been released whose best strip was America, that fully painted masterwork by Colin MacNeil.

Couple that with the success of Aliens Book 2 (fully painted? I don't know what media Dennis Beavaux (sp?) used) and suddenly everyone but everyone wanted or needed fully painted art to go with the comics, and of course money was flying around and they could afford it.

These days the comic art market is more... austere, fully inked up artwork with digital colouring, which sometimes is miss but more often then not is a hit. Generally the colouring is very good, unlike the technicolour rainbows that seeped into the 90's US comic scene. Nowadays the gimmick is digibashing photos (not my favourite technique I'll be honest) instead of fully painted, but some are in there. Insurrection by Colin MacNiel is fully painted, but black and white.

You should try and pick up prog 2012 (on sale until early January I think) and see what you think.

    Edit
Actually you should check out an independent story that ran in the Megazine recently called Snapshot (art and story by Jock IIRC) black and white, very cinematic, looked like zipatone (but was probably computers) and was lush. There might be a TPB of that coming out at some point, but as it was an independent I'm not sure if Rebellion would publish it.

I have a friend who is trying to value a collection of 2000AD comics. No idea of age, I'm afraid. Anyone any idea where she should look?

    Thanks

Hmm, ordinarily I'd say inquire with a range of comic stores, like Gosh comics and see what they say. I genuinely have no idea what the secondary market prices are on weekly issues, but I'd hazard they would go more cheaply than monthlies.

Well he first 2000AD prog of the year was released yesterday, and yeah, not bad. The Dredd story looks like a good little tale, small on scale but after last years Day of Chaos and Trifecta I can do with something more contained.

Got the Anderson Psi files on order, should hopefully get my psychic fix soon, it should be out already but its not turned up in shops yet.

Also Dredd 3D is out later this month, can't wait as I couldn't get to see it at the cinema!

Apparently Resident Evil the film didn't do that well at box office (102 million worldwide?) but did so well on DVD it warrented a sequel. I don't know what Dredd did at box office (IMDB site is a piece of shit on my tablet) but if it does well at home maybe theres a chance.

What figures? I haven't seen anything about new Dredd figures. I'd be up for those.
