Inspired by a couple of threads in the "Movies and Television" forum, post the most recent comic issue, trade, graphic novel, manga, webcomic, newspaper comic or other form of sequential art you've read and give it a rating out of 10.

To get started, my most recent reads:

- Fables v4: March of the Wooden Soldiers - 8/10 - This title took awhile to grow on me, but very glad I stuck with it. The story is picking up a lot and the art fits perfectly with the tone of the series.

- Preacher v5: Dixie Fried - 6/10 - A bit slow and too many pages that are virtual walls of text. Granted, there's a lot of stuff that needs to be set up for the second half of the series, but it's disappointing after the last two volumes.

- Franken Fran v6, Ch40: Buccaneer - 8/10 - Nice to see the introduction of what will, hopefully, be a major recurring character and maybe give the series more of an overarching plot. Also some more creativity from Fran. Better than the last few chapters.

 

Button Man 2 - The Confession of Harry Exton - 9/10

An out of work Mercenary gets caught up in a high stakes hitman contest for the gambling entertainment of rich backers. Was a bit iffy about carrying on after the first series since it was such a good contained story, but I should have known better then to doubt John Wagner and Arthur Ranson could draw Herpes and make it look gorgeous.

XIII Vol.1 - Day of the Black Sun - 8/10

Finally hitting this up now that its being published by somebody thats actually got a clue how to sell French-Belgese comics outside of mainland Europe. Sort of like Bourne, but more engaging and with a more interesting setup.

Largo Winch vol. 1 and 2 - The Heir / The W Group - 8/10

Another quality series from the same writer as XIII, its like Bond movies with businessmen instead of spies.

I've currently got Nextwave on the boil and will be hitting up another French title after that, althougth which one depends on what arrives in the post first.

 

Superman: Last Son - 10/10. Awesome.

Superman: New Krytpon vol. 1 - 7/10. The Jimmy Olsen parts bored me to tears, but seeing a bunch of Kryptonians mess Doomsday up was worth it.

 

The last thing I finished reading was the Conner/Gray/Palmiotti run on Power Girl. I give it a solid 8 out of 10. I'd give it a 10 out of 10 but I felt the repeated jokes about Kara's physical attributes were unnecessary.

It was quite possibly the most fun I've had reading a comic since the early days of Ultimate Spider-Man. Most comics these days try to be "grim and gritty" or serious in one way or another, but this was just fun from start to finish. It's a shame more books aren't like that.

 

Single comic, Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark, THEY GOT MIXED UP! - Solid 10/10. It's just plain stupid fun. There's no explanation why they are that way but hilarity ensues.

TPB - Superman for all Seasons - 7/10. It was a nice read from the Loeb/Sale team. Hits superman closer to home and how he became the super man he is today

Great artwork, cool story at the beginning, but confusing at the end and the story went into the very other direction from what I exptected. And it ended kinda suddenly, the last book I did not really know what was happening.

 

BD 5 - 8/10 advances the story of Aquaman and The Hawks. And shows a potential power of the WLs.

Avengers: the Children's Crusade 8/10 great set up. Looks good excited for next part.

Second Coming Chapter 13 X-force 28 - 9/10 Love this series full of action. Finally see Hopes Powers Manifest. Great Action thought this issues aswell. Cannot wait for the conclusion. Next week.

X-men 1 - 7/10 The vampire them looks promising. Nothing like twilight. Though I hope they do a Deadpool joke or the Vampires kill The Twitard actors.

Also read Y The Last Man recently it was an amazing series. 9.5/10 Some parts were a little slow. I loved that they didn't explain the why he was the last man and gave you a chance to decide what you wanted it to be: was it a religious thing, a virus released accidentally or some other biological event. I highly recommend you read this series.

 

New Teen Titans: Special Preview (1980) - 10/10. This was the preview that re-launched the Titans and introduced my favorite Titan, Raven.

New Teen Titans: Issue #1 (1980) - 10/10. Exquisite. Wolfman and Perez made a stellar creative team.

Superman: For the Man That Has Everything (1985) - 10/10. Curt Swan and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) did this issue. Amazing. If it sounds familiar, this was directly adapted into an episode of Justice League Unlimited.

 

Trigun Maximum Vols. 1&2- 7/10

I'm not much of a manga reader, so take that into consideration. The story is pretty decent so far, and I know that stories in this genre usually take some time to get rolling, so I have some patience. However, the art, while nice, is kind of hard to follow, especially in scenes with lots of action. Also, the fact that non of the sound effects are translated make it extra hard to gague the action.

 

Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life- 10/10

I wanted to see what all the hype was about this Scott Pilgrim series. Now I know, and it is awesome. I love the art style.

 

Ironhide #3 - 8/10
Great issue, but it brought up more questions than answers in a series that only has one issue left.

Jurassic Park #1 - 6/10
Thought I'd give this new series a try. Story was an alright set up, not a big fan of the art though. I'll probably give the next issue a shot to see if they go anywhere interesting from here.

28 Days Later #12 - 8.5/10
Love how they continue the original movie's theme of how regular humans are more monstrous than the infected. Sad to see the end of one character, but the story is going on and is keeping me interested.

 

Tales of the New Teen Titans vol. 2 (1982) - 10/10. Raven's backstory gets explained more in-depth. Excellent writing and artwork.

 

Saga of the Swamp Thing Vol. 1 10/10

Classics by Alan Moore. I'm a pretty big Swamp Thing fan, so it was absolutely criminal that I hadn't read these yet! Awesome, awesome, awesome stuff!

 

I envy you very much. Did they include the Superman/Swamp Thing crossover?

 

Thunderbolts #145 - 7/10

The new team's just starting to get going and so far none of them look all that impressive. Hopefully things pick up from here.

Amazing Spiderman #635 - 6/10

I'm not really into the art for "Grim Hunt". I'm also not so sure that Kraven is worthy of a storyline as epic as they are making this out to be. Hoping more characters from "The Gauntlet" start showing up to make it a little more interesting.

 

All-Star Superman Vol. 1 - 8/10. Could have been better, but I liked it alright.

Batman #237, The Night of the Reaper - 10/10. Batman hunting Nazi war criminals. Amazing.

 

Thanks! I was really impressed with both books! This set didn't include that crossover, but I do still have that comic from when I was a kid. Amazing stuff in that issue! I may have to dig it out again...

Thanks to an amazing find at my local Goodwill, I was able to pick up Swamp Thing: A Murder of Crows, Swamp Thing: Love and Death, Transformers: The Greatest Battles of Optimus Prime and Megatron, and The Incredible Hulk: The Red Hulk all in TPB this week!

Swamp Thing: Love and Death is the only one I've finished so far and that's because it's mostly the same stuff in the Saga Part 2 book. I would rate this collection a 10/10. There's a lot of amazing stories in this one including the start of Swamp Thing and Abby's love affair. My favorite story, though, is issue #32 "Pog". I have this issue in my collection from when I was younger and it gets me teary eyed every time I read it. I've rarely run across a comic that brings that much emotion out in me and I have to give it much respect for that!

 

AKIRA: Book 5 - 9/10, my favorite part of the second trilogy!

 

Preacher v6: War in the Sun - 8/10 - Now that's more like it. More action, the story progresses further and some classic moments from Starr and the Saint. Second half was a bit slow, though, and the Arseface subplot is quickly losing my interest.

 

re-read Bitter Virgin again, still a 9/10 for me.
It'd be a 10 if the ending didn't feel so damned rushed.
