For 20 bucks you get hell of a lot more material than regular issues - all the added content in annual issues, prolog chapters and what not, all in chronological order.

I'm on Walking Dead right now, and I love it. So I will recommend that as well.
Sandman is fantastic, and should definitely be on your list of books to try.
And this one isn't exactly a series, just 1 trade out now with the second volume incoming, but I have to put in a shout out to Umbrella Academy. I thought it was fantastic.
Did DMZ get better? I was reading the single issues from the start until about 21 or so and just got bored.

One of the TPBs I got for free from my brother in laws collection is Walking Dead #1.
I can't read anything Gaiman anymore. He's just too out there for me.
I like DMZ a lot. I'm on #5 now but I liked #4's story arc a lot. | |
