DC’s THE GREAT TEN PREVIEW GALLERY

Sunday’s Arts & Leisure piece in the New York Times regarding diversity in American comic books not only included the first look at DC’s new Batwoman character, accompanying the piece was a slideshow gallery featuring character designs of the highly-touted “The Great Ten” – the Grant Morrison-conceived, Chinese government controlled superteam making their debut in a June issue of 52.

Here is a look at the images and the text descriptions of each character as described by the Times and/or the character sketch itself. Click on the images to open larger versions…

The guardsman reminds me alot of the crimson dynamo with a hint of hulkbuster armour. Aside from that though those are pretty good

Like I said before in the Batwoman thread, the only one I"m digging is the Archer (who reminds me of a Chinese version of Hawkeye) and the Crimson Dynamo like Socialist Red Guard (Oh, my he carried out the Cultural Revolution! ) . Seven Deadly Brothers is a nice nod to that myth.

Also, the relationship between Shaolin Robot + August General makes no sense to me since the Shaolin monks, I don't recall ever wanting Imperial/dynastic rule. Ironically, they were crushed by the Manchurians in the last crummy Ching dynasty. And Mother of Champions still is IMHO... her name and power just invites stereotypes up the wazoo.

When I think “Chinese Government sponsored super team” I have an image in my head of a team with a matching theme to there costumes, more like a uniform, probable in red and white and not silken robe ancient China looking stuff.

Thundermind is vary Buddhist looking, would a communist government want to promote something like that?

Yeah, the costumes allude to ancient/classical aesthetics rather than communist/proletarian fashion simply because I don't think the latter would look appealing, and frankly be boring to readers.

As for Thundermind, I dunno, I understand that the government does not tolerate Abrahamic religions too well (due to history), but in the case of Buddhism, it's more or less ingrained and accepted into the culture. Politically, I don't think such a character would be favored by the government, but who knows this whole team is Grant Morrison's idea...

Celestial Archer - Not bad; interesting costume design, although using red instead of purple might be good to keep this from being 'Chinese Hawkeye'.

Ghost Fox Killer - Does she kill ghost foxes or is she a ghost fox that kills men?

Mother of Champions - So very, very wrong.

Accomplished Perfect Physician - Odd name (maybe just a Chinese-to-English translation artifact?) and a power that doesn't seem very useful for combat. "Stop or I'll...uhh...cure your cancer! Yeah!"

Seven Deadly Brothers - Chinese Multiple Man, basically.

Thundermind - Actually, not a bad name or costume design, but I agree that the Chinese government probably wouldn't be promoting a Buddhist superhero.

Socialist Red Guardian - Was 'Red Guardian' trademarked or something? The character name just seems a little redundant. Not a bad design, though.

Immortal Man in Darkness - Beware his dark swirling vapors and...his...umm...immortality!

August General - Looks like a rejected Elseworlds Aquaman design.

Shaolin Robot - I wasn't aware Shaolin monks had access to robotics technology, but OK.
