George Lucas has Industrial Light + Magic, Peter Jackson has Weta, and now Michael Bay has Digital Domain reports Reuters.

Investment Group Wyndcrest Holdings, in which Bay and former NFL star Dan Marino are principals, are set to announce today the acquisition of the 13-year-old visual effects studio in a deal estimated to be worth $35 million.

Considered one of the 'big four' of feature film effects houses, Digital Domain was founded director James Cameron and F/X guru Stan Winston in 1994 and has worked on the visuals of such films as "Titanic" and "What Dreams May Come".

Its likely that Bay's next pic "Transformers" will award its effects contract to the company.

They are.

There is nothing wrong with a big time Director buying an F/X house. The mention of them working on TF:the movie is just speculation on the part of the reporter.

ok thought so, nice to know I'm not senile yet :p Well, if a different effects house has already been announced, then its not speculation on the part of the reporter, but ignorance of the issue weee!

True, but given the time constaints of this film and it's '07 deadline, it's not unheard of for a Director/Producer to farm out work to another company to meet said deadline.

Jackson did for LOTR. :thumb

Jackson did for LOTR. :thumbExactly. It's also a good investment for the sequels.

The Chronicles of Narnia was also done by two major effects company, one was Weta but I'm not sure about the other.

Considering how little post production time this movie is going to have if they want meet their release date, Multiple FX houses are just about going to be a requirement.

The Chronicles of Narnia was also done by two major effects company, one was Weta but I'm not sure about the other.Weta Workshop provided costumes, props, and other things, but I don't think Weta Digital had anything to do with it. If they did, it was only minor. The majority of the visual effects were done by ILM, SPI, and Rhythm & Hues.
