problems with images being tiny

so a lot of times people post a link to images in a thread, and when I click on them, they're a little bigger than a postage stamp on my screen. for instance, the following:

now the images usually have the size listed under them, so I would believe that they'd be bigger than like 1.5 square inches. is there some setting I'm missing, are they really supposed to be tiny, or is it because my resolution is 1600x1200?
