EISB has learned and confirmed that KNB Effects will be working on Robotics for the upcoming Transformers The Movie. This means the Transformers themselves will NOT be 100% CGI!

My first thoughts exactly. Just cause they're using robotics, doesn't mean that they're going to look compleatly robotic. (although that is kinda what we're looking for here isn't it?)

Too much CGI = fake looking. With some true models maybe this will strike a good balance.

More than likely we'll never end up seeing them on screen. These days they're almost always replaced in post with CG.

As long as the CGI isn't too "Fake" looking, which is a hilarious thing to say since, you know, it is fake, I don't really care.

Yeah I was thinking the T-rex from JP. Probably just for human interaction shots and the like.

Seems the most likely thing - physical robotic props for shots that require direct interaction with human actors.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Acting is one thing, but the actor's eye lines never seems to be right half the time, and sometimes, a REAL Giant Robot Hand looks better than a CGI'd Giant Robot Hand when viewed up close. Other than that, I can see a scene in a Robotics laboratory where scientists are showing off their latest Robotic Tech, early in the movie, just to set us up for the eye ball exploding visuals later on.

Why not? According to some people on this board, they'll like anything so long as a TF logo has been slapped on. People point all the time to how BW worked and wasn't at all similar to the original characters in terms of appearance. Plus, the writers, producers, and directors need their all important creative license.
Some people like that weird animal-spikey thing thats supposed to look like Starscream. Some people might like the above too. Just make him megatron as he already has something similar to his blast cannon on his shoulder.

I would think this might also apply to the 'show vehicles'. The fight between Ratchet and Runaboutamuck in Inflitration comes to mind.
Or a vehicle that "falls apart" before reforming. Which is what Sparkplug thought Bumblebee was doing the first time he witnessed him transforming.
And BTW there ain't nothing wrong with Johnny 5 (at least not in the 1st movie) :p

Dude, is it just me or are you incredibly bitter about this movie? Everytime I see you post in one of these things you're always downing something and the constant insinuation that TF fans will buy anything with a TF stamp is kind of old too.
Take a chill pill man, we're all worried about how the movie is going to turn out. But let's not ruin it for ourselves until we've seen it eh?
On the topic at hand, I figure the robotics are for actor interaction for the most part. I seriously doubt that they'll be seen in the final draft of the movie though as most robotics made for actor interaction are later replaced with CGI in the final cut of recent films. Still, we'll have to wait and see what they use the robotics for... could look good enough that it stays in the film.
Oh, and Johnny 5 was cool for his day. DON'T DISS JOHNNY 5!

You've been bagging on this movie from the start.
Maybe have a little faith and WAIT till we see a trailer before you cast stones on how bad it will be.
You know just because we're fans doesn't mean we knows how to make blockbuster movies. If you want a fan's only movie then this movie might not be for you. However feel free to see it if you're expecting an enjoyable movie experience
And I resent the remark that as a fan I'll buy anything and everything with the TF logo. That comment is pure fandom generalization and you're grasping at straws.

Sounds pretty cool. I really don't understand why people are getting all worked up about it, we don't even know how involved these robotc are going to be...I'll agree it's probably just for human interaction, and will probably be replaced by CGI later on. In fact I'm thinking the overall animatronics might really look like good old Johnny-5 and are purely just to get the proper positions and actor eye contact realistic before they add in all the compoter stuff. Just my $.2

S33:
Well, I'm trying to ignore most of the pre-movie news and hope for the best. If it's rubbish, let's hope we can contain the evil and quickly move it to the ashcan of history.
Once in 1986 I made the mistake of seeing a post-movie G1 cartoon (Thief in the Night, I now realize) with characters I didn't recognize, and writing off the whole thing. Oops. Later, in 1997, I saw a friend's collection of the G1-character Gobots and Laser Prime, decided they were okay but not worth chasing after, and missed out on the last (best) part of G2. Oops. Then I made the mistake of reading in the a.t.t. FAQ about Beast Wars and writing it off as something stupid, and missing out on the WHOLE DARN THING. Since then the few Universe figures, heinously cut Hasbro webisodes, and knockoffs I have found have convinced me I was wrong. Oops.
You can see why I don't intend to make these mistakes again. So, while I think that 'Spikescream' is the ugliest thing ever, like a bizarre hallucination of an industrial robot designer, stepped on, eaten, and excreted by Unicron with indigestion, I have decided to mercilessly make fun of his design, while hoping that it is nothing more than disinformation, intended to confuse, and wait for the movie to come out. I'll probably wait for the video in any case, though.

The people who always smugly write "wait till the movie has come out to say whether it is bad or good" kinda annoy me. Why have these news and rumors threads in the first place? So people can say "Sounds interesting, but I will wait to make up my mind till after the movie comes out" Of course I am going to wait till after the movie to come out to judge. But thats the point of this thread - to comment on the news/rumor.
You will always be right with that "wait and decide" type comment but what kinda discussion does that start? Everyone on this board might as well write "I will wait till the movie to decide" on every news thread.
Believe me, I am not getting all worked up over this stuff. I am merely sharing my opinion.
Oh, and to whoever it was that said I was bad mouthing this movie from the beginning, I have only been expressing my views on what I think are bad ideas. Some others express their opinions on who is going to voice them or which TFs are going to be in the movie. I could hardly care who is in the movie. It could be a Blue Rumble, Wheelie, Twin Twist, and Skids and I wouldn't care. I don't even care if the main Autobot is named Optimus Prime or John Jacob Jinglehimerschmidt. I don't care if Macauly Caulkin voices Megatron or Welker.

No surprize here. Usually for giant characters like this puppets are used for a good part of the footage. These are the same guys who did the skeletons for Army of Darkness and Violator for Spawn.

I, for one, am quite happy about this announcement. I'm pretty much sick and tired of cgi, greenscreening, and all that manner of special imagery. It certainly looks better than it did a while back, but it still feels too artificial to me. I'd like to see some movement back towards animatronics, prosthetics, and models. So to me, this is a good sign.
Now, this isn't to say I'm against cgi, only that I believe it shouldn't be the only special effects technique used.

Hey, nobody's saying that you can't voice your opinion. Like you say the point of this message board is to invoc discussion. But there's a right and wrong way to do that. Personally, I think you can express your opinion without insulting the rest of us with your condescending comments about how all of us will buy anything with a TF logo slapped on it. Those kind of comments aren't your opinion... they're generalizations and are an insult to every intelligent person on this message board. Also, this movie isn't the first time that you've made such comments (Alt Prime comes to mind) and it seems that everytime you share your opinion you also have to insult us with such comments when someone has an opinion differing to yours.
Like I've said to you in another thread, I agree with some of what you've said and am leery of some of the things that they might be doing with this movie. However, I've decided to smugly (as you say) wait till the movie comes out. I would like to point out to you that I don't do this to be wrong or right when the time comes, because (and this might shock you) I don't really care if my opinion is wrong or right because (guess what) it's an opinion... just like your opinion. Myself, I don't expect this movie to be some great big fanfest... infact I don't expect it to be much more than something on the bigscreen similar to any other reimagining of TFs that's designed to make alot of money for everyone involved. Fans aren't really a factor in that and although that sucks... that's the way Hollywood works. I'm simply expecting typical Hollywood flare and will be pleasantly surprised if we get any fan nods at all.
Anyways, I've derailed this thread enough... sorry to all for the rant.
Superion33
05-09-2006, 03:57 PM
I don't think you're derailing this thread. I think the people who derail this thread are the ones who always say "Sounds interesting, but I am going to wait for the movie to judge". Those are the kind of comments that stymie all discussion. I'm sure the mods don't want an entire thread of people agreeing with each other in happy, make believe land.
As far as the TF slapped on anything type comments, I'm sorry, but thats how I feel. I shouldn't be surprised, this website is for hardcore TF enthusiasts. From what I could tell with my short time here, some of the biggest TF collectors are here. I would even go so far as to say that most of the people who follow TFs, do so first for the toys and second for the mythos/cartoons/comics. I might be wrong, but thats the impression that I get - that most of the members here are TF toy collectors first. I am pretty safe in saying that because most of the things put on the front page of this site are toy collector oriented. I myself didn't have many TF toys, 20 - 30 in all including my brothers collections, and am a fan of TF for the mythos more than the toys.
The entire definition of a collector (at least in my head) is someone that collects everything related to one subject. Whether that is stamps, baseball cards, or TFs. So I am right in assuming that people here would buy Anything with a TF logo slapped on it. Some here have even admitted to doing just that. That is their choice and they have a right to that choice.
As far as my condescending comments, I made them because I received the same from others. Theirs are much more veiled though. I am no paranoid schizophrenic, but when people say for me to "calm down" or talk about "sage advice in waiting for a movie", those count as put-downs too. I express my views more strongly. Sometimes I pay the price for sticking my neck out there, but I'd rather do that than play the ambivalent game.

you don't have to get EVERYthing of something in order to be a collector. I for one sure don't... that's called a completist... there are SOME who are this way, but most of us pick and choose because it costs way too much money to be a completist of most things. I'm glad to see you guys are getting along. Debate is a wonderful thing, as long as everyone is civil and orderly :thumb

On a side note...heh, every movie can be judged by its trailers and press releases. Seriously, hasn't everyone developed a crap-dar by now where you can just TELL 90% of the time which movies are good and which aren't worth it?
I guess actually having seen something does give you more credibility to say it sucks ass though :)
