View Full Version : Blogs and consequent refurbs of the site

I realize this is partially related to the "What are the BAD change" site-change topic, but I figured I'd post it independently so that I can raise two points.
Since I lost a bulk of the information regarding my Mom's passing when the blogs got wiped, I've been pretty gunshy about using them again. I liked the feature when it first got implemented, but if the blogs are going to be disregarded during any future refurbs of the site, then I'd rather not use them.
So, a few questions.
1. Is there ANY way I can get access to the old blogs and their entries? I'd like to get some of the stuff regarding my Mom's passing saved onto my own computer.
2. Will blog entries be treated like the Fuzzy World in future updates, or will the staff work to keep them preserved/saved/etc?

I just wanted to say that if someone can get you that entry you want back instead of reposting it in your 2005 blog incase Tony decides to clean house again or something. you can make a blog at www.livejournal.com for free and put the entry there and it will permenant unless you erase it.
But good luck with everything

I appreciate the offer, but I'd rather avoid Livejournal. I've already got another blog on myspace that I think I'll use more regularly...I was just hoping to use this one for ruminations on Transformers that I couldn't post in TFGD.

I was hoping Tony would see this and could give more definetive answer. Here's what I could dig up about the situation.
The upgrade we had done wasn't a standard features upgrade, it was a complete version upgrade. Our last blog system was rigged so it would work like it did, with out board system. I know Tony had tried to migrate everythign over to the new system, but some things did not take. The Blogs were one of the things that did not migrate. There was no way to forsee it not migrating. I have searched everywhere to see if the old blogs still existed in some form or fashion, I have not been able to locate anything.
We have no plans to actively delete blogs, we had no intentions of losing our old blogs. However, we can not tell what future upgrades to VBulletin will hold. Though we only have done the major upgrades on 2005, and those have been pretty few and far between.
Hopefully Tony can jump in and offer further clarification where needed.

Also, I belive there is the option to download your blog as a text file, allowing you to save it for future reference.
Out of interest, how long does your web browser keep web pages for?

You might get lucky with the way back machine or google caches.

I had a limited look at it, and all I could find was a title.

I really appreciate the help, guys! Thanks for the definitive answers, Joe.
Unfortunately, I'm a real spaz when it comes to my cache and I usually purge it every few days. I checked the temp directories for the two browsers I use and I'm SOL there.
However, I did some cross-checking and I have one or two posts on my Myspace page that mirror the ones on here. Lesson learned, though, at least on my side - save what you ramble about!
As for the blogs, I think I'm going to devote them solely to musings on Transformers, transformer collecting and TF media from this point on.

One more question - will there be any plans to integrate the blog posts, like a part of the message boards, back into the boards' master list? In my opinion, having blog posts visible to the board master list "advertised" better - it made most recent blog posts and updates easier to see and you could follow who had responded to your blog.
As the blogs are now, it feels, to me, like they have been sequestered away to a part of the site that's not frequented by the talkative community on TFW.
Thoughts? Advice? Feelings? Squid?

I know that is one of the things on Tony's agenda. Since the new board software changed the way the blog system works in general, he has to find a new way to reintigrate them with the boards. It's not as easy as it was before to get them to marry up. But it is something he is working on. Plus it's a feature I want back as well.

I think I have more interest in blogging when its right there in the area I hang around anyways. I don't always think about checking the blogs if its not right in front of me.
