View Full Version : 2005 Boards Back Online - New Features Available

The 2005 Boards were shut down over the last 12-18 hours, but they are officially back online. We have upgraded the backbone of the 2005 Boards system and in the process added some new bells and whistles for you the fans! Check out a quick list below.

<b>All New Junkion Exchange</b> - Instead of using the "post a thread for the item, update a feedback thread" situation in our Buy/Sell/Trade forums (aka the Junkion Exchange), we have implemented a full classifieds system, tied right into the 2005 Boards. Now, you can list items in a Craigs List/Ebay style format, including a picture, price, and description. This can be done for items that are for sale, for trade, or even ones you are just looking for (in their own section). If you are a seller, you can even enter your Paypal information and create an instant payment button. These listings are then categorized, displayed and searchable. On top of this, a <b>Feedback System</b> is now tied into all that, so board members can rate each other ebay style on their dealings. Feedback is available on a dedicated page for each user, your rating shows up in all your posts, and your feedback also shows up in your profile page. This should give the 2005 Boards community a solid dedicated place to find and trade their Transformers items. <b>The new Junkion Exchange is and always will be 100% FREE for all members.</b>

<b>All New Blog System</b> - The Blog system we were using was a bit buggy and didnt fully flow with the 2005 Boards core system. We have installed a new one, so now each member can have a dedicated journal to talk about whatever they want, complete with comments and more. Just hit the Blog Index and choose to start a new blog by clicking the button, and type till your heart is contnent!

<b>All New "MySpace Style" Profiles</b> - Each member now has a ton of options to fill in which will show up in their user profile. The user profile page was redesigned to resemble a "MySpace" feel, but more Transformers oriented. PLUS! <b>You can now create your very own TECH SPEC</b>. Just choose your Name, faction, motto, function, and skill levels, upload a picture, and BAM, your tech spec will be online for all to see. We have also implemented a "Friends" system, where each of you can add each other to your buddy lists through the boards, and your top 9 buddies with avatars will show up on your profile page. Go ahead and get your "clique" on!

Those are the main upgrades, along with overall streamlining of the forum functionality to look a bit better, and function better for you regular users (first/last/unread post options, pips, quick edit, quick reply PM, etc etc).

Feel free to give us some feedback by resonding here!

BTW, more detailed help and tutorials will be coming for the new systems, Im just dead tired right now.

Later!

All my subscriptions are gone.

This is really, really annoying. Granted, I can search threads on my own name and resubscribe, but it's a pain.

Also, the Options setting to increase the number of threads displayed per page doesn't work -- right now, it seems to be fixed at 10, which for me is low.

-XCN-

P.S. Are post counts gone? I don't care one way or the other, but I imagine this might surprise a lot of people.

Tony_Bacala
04-16-2006, 04:04 PM
Subscriptions are unfortunately one of the casualties of the upgrade.

Just so you know, this wasn't done for the purpose of just adding new bells and whisltes, it needed to be done for general upgrade reasons. The new stuff are just things that we did at the same time.

I will look into the per page situation, but that is usually set in your USERCP options if you haven't been there. If you have and it doesnt work there, Ill check the back end soon.

Tony_Bacala
04-16-2006, 04:05 PM
Post counts are not gone, but they are not viewable per post. Must see the count in the members profile now.

Just a couple of questions from me:

1. Is it necessary to enter a price when I post an ad? I'd prefer to have buyers make me an offer instead of having to guess something that might be too high or low. (Some of the stuff I was selling before does not show up on eBay that often, so I can't use that as a measuring stick)

2. I don't know the technical side of what you've done, but is there any way that our old feedback can be migrated to the new system?

Xcandescent
04-16-2006, 04:08 PM
I noticed people who used to have avatars now have a link to view said avatar instead -- except they're all blank. I'm guessing that avatars were lost in the upgrade?

Also, is avatar size still tied to post count?

Avatar count not tied to post count.

Avatar size now 100 x 100 instead of 50 x 50

Avatars were imported, but got hosed, so are lost. Sorry i tried.

As for the Junkion, feel free to enter no price, but just make sure to mention "Make me an offer" in some way in your item listing. If the system requires a price to post, i suggest putting "0.00" or something.

I love that whatever upgrade you did is now compatible with Safari. I can now view the newest post properly, something Safari couldn't do before on this board(Safari java still isn't fully developed).

And I love the tech specs thing. Great job!

Tony_Bacala
04-16-2006, 04:28 PM
If i remember correctly, before the upgrade the max was at 20 there too. I have to keep that as low as possible, server stress wise. More per page = more info at once = more memory needed = when busy[site_blows_up]

Few things -

10 threads per index page, is that permanent or can we get it back up to what it used to be?

Custom avatars, do I need new glasses or is there no option anywhere in the control panel to use your own rather then the pre-set generics?

Now that user profiles are myspace style, do I have to dress like an emo and cut my wrists?

rattrap007
04-16-2006, 04:33 PM
I still don't see the option for more threads listed per page.. Hope you all can raise it a bit.

Otherwise the new looks is pretty good.

Here's a problem. I can't edit my for sale ad because it says I don't have the necessary permissions. If I was to sell an item on my message board, or was to work out a trade involving a figure I have on there, I couldn't go in and end it. The danger also comes if someone decides to buy it outright at the same time and click the PayPal button. Then I'd be screwed. :p Please fix! :)

Suggestion: Is there a way to display more than just the 10 latest threads when viewing any of the various forum. It seems like such a small amount, considering useful threads may be knocked down to below 10th place, and consequently put on a second page, within only a few hours, making the thread invisible to most people?

Take the Seibertron or TFans forums, for instance. They have very long pages that display at least the last 40 or more threads, allowing the reader to see more of recent threads and may save from needless bumping in the future.

Just my two cents.

I like the new look, but the junkion exchange isn't going to work for me I don't think. If we have like 20 things to sell, we can't make a list in a thread anymore, correct? I'll wait and try it out a few times before I decide on it I guess.

I'm usually in favor of this kind of changes, but it seems (to me) that too much got lost in the upgrade, and that I have no use for the new features, so I'm kind of sad.

Have to say I like the new boards' layout and I applaud the inclusion of a spell checker.

Also, I haven't seen this mentioned yet, and don't know if this is the proper thread to report it, but almost all the "discuss" buttons on the home page link to the wrong thread. It's pretty annoying actually.

Seems like mostly good stuff so far. Going to take some tweaking to get everything back to how I like it (adjusting my profile, etc). Not sure I like the idea of friends through myspace style profiles. I mean we're all on the board, right? It's a friendly place. Seems kind of unnecessary.

I also miss the post count as part of the in-post user info. I was so close to 4000 too. :(

I'm not sure if it's just me, but when I look at the "more" link for all the smilies, only 14 of them are loading.

Something else I'm noticing is the (dare I say it) pips. If there's new posts in a thread it doesn't distinguish between a thread you've posted in and one you haven't, which is extremely annoying. Being able to see which threads I've posted in was a great way to remember if I cared about what was being said and if I wanted to read the new posts or not.

Edit: nevermind, it looks like it's only that way with new posts in threads I haven't read since the upgrade.

The JE ads are a little weird. I have to manually enter "<br>" to get line breaks. Also, I forgot to fill out some sections and I can't even access my ad to delete. Also can't edit ads, only delete them and repost.

Also, a big deal to me, is that my Paypal account is READILY available to whomever clicks on the little PP icon. I don't like that since it has a legitimate e-mail address that I would rather not receive spam at or have unknown people accessing. I think it should only be available to the known buyer. Also, what happens if more than one person decides to contact me about my item and my item is payed for multiple times. Paypal keeps their fees, ever when you refund money (lame).

edit:

I just noticed that the old JE boards are disabled. What's up with that? I liked the way that was. Is there any chance of having both? At least until we get the new JE sorted out. It's really clunky as it is.

It would also be cool if you could categorize your JE add according to Japan,U.S., Europe or other release and then the series. It would make finding things much easier. It's not so bad since there're only ~25 ads, but it's going to get messy.

As for the cookies, they are set exactly as they were before.

I would suggest anyone having these problems to log out, then clear your cookies completely from your browser, close browser, then restart browser.

When you log back in, check the "remember me" box. Ive done it on Firefox and IE, as an admin and as a regular user, and they have stuck for me both times.

Doh. That's probably it, it probably doesn't like the old cookie that sitting there, even though it should have overwritten it. Anyways, I'll try it then get back and edit this reply with my success.

EDIT: ok that works. Funny though, I deleted the cookie for this site, closed browser, opened again, and came back here and I was automagically logged in. It didn't ask me again for a log on which I thought it probably should have with no cookie there. Ah well, it seems to be all good now.

Junkion situation:

For now, sticking with this system. Its new, people dont like change I know, but I believe this can do everything the forum method did and more once we tweak it and upgrade it (coming soon).

Ability to edit the listing is now turned on for people that create the listing.

Will however most likely be upgrading it to allow for a disucssion thread to occur, similar to how threads went down in Junkion before.

Also, that upgrade will allow for users to have a listing of all items / lots / etc for sale/trade listed in their Junkion Profile, and on their profile page

Paypal issue with that, the option is there, but not mandatory. If you dont want your paypal address public, then dont list it. Work it out the same way you did before via PMs.

You can list lots, and then edit the listing as you receive PMs to remove the items not available anymore.

If you want to do business with non-board members, you can list your direct email in listing. Tho I dont suggest doing that.

Question to anyone that cares about thread counts and thread views on listing pages....

If I made it so that when you hover over the forum title on main page, it showed you the "Threads: 100 | Posts: 1000"

Log in thing works for me now, didn't have to do anything. Weird.

If I made it so that when you hover over the forum title on main page, it showed you the "Threads: 100 | Posts: 1000"

...

Instead of having them listed in the actual forum layout. Or do you guys just really want those columns back.

I'd at least like the "replies" column back. Views I've only found useful for when I've listed thread in Junkion, I'm not sure how much that'll stay in play now.

I also noticed the Toy Fair section is down. Not sure if it's supposed to be or not, but it's giving me:
Warning: main(news3/show_news.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/html/toyfair-2006.php on line 37

Warning: main(): Failed opening 'news3/show_news.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/php/includes:/usr/share/php') in /var/www/html/toyfair-2006.php on line 37

Yea, views don't really matter, but number of replies is a nice feature to put back in. I know it helps in the for sale sections as (as a buyer), I know by looking at replies, that I know if it's high to not click and go on in and waste my time on toys already gone.

And as a seller on other forums it's handy to know how many replies are in your thread instead of having to click on it.

So bring back reply counts.

Also, when uploading a picture to the new format Junkion exchange, my camera saves photos to my HD as .JPG (all caps) instead of .jpg or .jpeg. When trying to upload an image, all I got was an error saying that the file extension was not recognized.

OK, just fixed that. Also upgraded the system to include alot more stuff, so it can function as old JE did. More details when done.

Not sure if this was mentioned here but...

Smilies are now fixed, and all are available in the drop down menu of the full WYSIWYG editor too.

Plus, Custom Titles can now be changed manually in the UserCP again.

I just added the "display # of threads per page" in your UserCP. Its under "Edit Options ->Thread Viewing"

You can choose 10-25. Default for non-logged in and non-caring folks will stay at 10.

Turn your DST settings to "Always OFF", and your time zone to your actual time zone, that should work

Did you try doing what I explained earlier in the post?

Log out, clear all cookies from browser, Close Browser, reopen Browser, Log In, choose remember me.

Should be good then. No settings or functionality have changed that should change how the cookies work. Issues are probably coming from fact that 2 seperate cookies for same domain with same name/pass are in your system.

Thats there because the system allows for it normally when emails arent turned off.

However, I may turn emails back on due to something that was pointed out to me. Give me a bit to figure it all out. Want to see how the server holds up with this new board system when we are at peak times before turning email and other things back on.

Ok, just started messing with the profile. Is there any way to allow for more text in the interest fields? I'm having a hard time getting my musical interests down to just a few bands/artists for instance.

If not, no big deal.

Sorry if that was already addressed, I didn't get to (I was too lazy to) read the whole thread.

Question to anyone that cares about thread counts and thread views on listing pages....

Columns would be good -- otherwise it's much harder to spot the threads lots of people have bothered to reply to and everything blurs together somewhat.

edit:

On the other hand, it looks better with more than 10 threads in the forum index... hmm -- maybe have just the replies column rather than views?

Really like the edit-in-situ Ajax script.

I liked the Replies and Views columns -- but if I had to choose one, it would be Replies.

Noticed that the "View First Unread" option doesn't appear next to subscribed threads in the User CP anymore. Meaning: in order to view the first unread message in a thread, I now have to click on the first page of the thread, THEN click "View First Unread" to get there -- instead of just one click. Seems unnecessary, and a possible waste of bandwidth compared to the old method.

is there any way to leave the original JE open as an option?

this new formate is to much like a business (ebay) instead of a trading community.

i have delt with almost all / a lot of people and had more feedback than anybody else on the je, fb is not the resaon, but due to the amount of stuff i have and to list would take forever to list on the the new format.

in most cases i always give borad members 1st dibs on most of the stuff i get and am more than fair in buying trades and sells

today i talked with several other board memebers who are most active in the je,

just to many issues with the new je

Paypal keeps their fees, ever when you refund money (lame).

No they don't. :)

Right from the paypal website:

If you send a full refund using the Refund Payment link within 60 days of receiving the payment, PayPal automatically refunds the transaction fees. If you send a partial refund, the percentage of fees refunded is based on the percentage of the original transaction amount.

Sorry, we can't leave the old Junkion open, as it would cause confusion in the long run as to having 2 separate areas of trading and/or selling. We would have to close it down eventually anyway, as our new system is what we will be going forward with. You say it looks like a business style format, which is exactly the reason we went with it. We wanted a standardized look for the Junkion Exchange with the ability to easily add pictures and anything else that they wanted. We also wanted a new feedback system that tied directly into the item sales and trades, which is what this system does.

Also be aware, you can list more than one item (list as many in one listing as you want) per listing and edit it as you sell things off, juts like the old system.

If people have specific bugs they have found, then please report them. So far we've only heard "I don't like it", without anyone providing feedback as to what specifically makes this system unusable to them.

how does the fb work in that case, can u leave several fb for the same auction?

i see u can just add the extra pics in the message area

Hi,

I'm liking the new format. It's an improvement in my opinion. Buying/looking seems easier.

I'm trying to submit a couple of ads but it's sending me here.

http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/sr_classifieds.php

I know that it's new but I noticed that a couple of ads are slowly posting.

Do I have to wait in line or is the Junkion Ex. still in a prototype stage with bugs getting worked on?

For now I'll keep trying to post an ad but it's a bit of work to keep trying to submit an ad every hour. Oh well...

I'm still working out this new format in JE as well. If we are allowed to list multiple items in one listing, can we post multiple pictures? If we can, is there a limit on how many pictures we can show in one listing? If there isn't, how do you post multiple pictures? There is only one "browse" application to post only one picture. Is there an option I can use?
Not to be a naysayer, but I'm still not completely sold on this particular change. I understand from the business point of view and it's staying, but the old JE had a personal touch to it. One of the reasons I come to this site more than any other is the interaction with other members. I think some of that interaction may be lost with this new version, IMO. It just seems much less a community in this format.
It's still early, I'll give it a chance, and see how it goes.
Other than that, the other stuff is great! I love the new profile options!:thumbs2: Keep up the good work!
