View Full Version : A Taste Of Things To Come! Amazing Fanmade Optimus CGI

Joe Moore

Now this is something really astounding. A fanmade CGI Optimus Prime that looks completely believable for a movie. It was done by a fan named blasphemy3_d from the CG Society Forums (http://www.cgsociety.org/). This render, with accompanying movie files, shows just how good a Transformers movie can look. Even more amazing than the faked leaked footage from before.

THIS IS IN NO WAY PART OF THE UPCOMING MOVIE. But is still worth a look. The thread in question can be seen By Clicking Here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=336742). There you will find hi-res renders and a few video files.

We have mirrored the 17 MB AVI.

Right Click and SAVE TARGET AS (http://www.tfw2005.com/~joe/OPTIMUS_AVI_HIGH.zip) and choose a destination.

Awesome and realistic CGI that translates the transformation of the toy well... except that, well, when translated into reality that way, the robot's actual design isn't very... good. I mean, the hands just pop out of an arm that's not thick enough to contain them.

I just noticed that. It's awesome, but little bits like that can bring it down.

Absolutely amazing, I really hope professional CGI artists create something as good.
When I saw the title first - I thought it was just another fan made CGI, yet when I started watching, I realized how huge this is. I hope I dont sound like a total geek, but this CGI is so beautiful that it almost opens up a whole new fantasy world and throws you in it.
Cannot wait to see the movie (PRO CGI artists with pro equipment cough, cough)...

This is a really nice piece of animation work. I really like the realism of the whole thing (even down the semi-jerkiness of the viewer's perspective). Part of me wants to see the bright red[ness] of the G1 Prime, but a part of me also is enjoying the muted pallete choice of this Prime as it further adds to the urban, gritty feel of realism. The hands have been noted, but everything else seems plausible. :thumbs2:

This animation makes me re-appreciate the original transform of the G1 Prime, though ever since we got MP-01Convoy/20th Optimus Prime, I really enjoy that transform just as much (and sometimes even more so now). Overall excellent though, and I can hardly believe that in just a few days (!) we are going to see a live action motion picture of our beloved Transformers! :rock

(BTW, is this the same animator who created the Alternators Camshaft? The animation style is a bit similar if it is not.)

WHOA. Wait a minute. Did I miss an announcement or something?

On-topic, I'd like to say that the CGI artist gets A+, absolutely 100% A-freakin-double-plus for his work. It looks EXACTLY like a truck based on the G1 version of the toy.

I'd also like to say that this complaint does not reflect on the CGI artist's skill: I wish he had gone for a better-looking version of Prime. I'm talking about the toy-version of the head, the thin arms, etc. But this is really nit picking. THAT WAS AMAZING!

Ehh, the visuals are okay, but it's kind of a weird juxtaposition to have cutting edge full CGI graphics (even the background) and have a dated, 20-someodd year old transformation. Draven could have done better.

Actually that is probably one of the best-looking depiction of a real transformer I have ever seen, probably only behind the Citroen commercial. I am talking realistic here, not stylistic. He was going for real, and it looks bloody great.

nothing about it impressed me. the transformation was beyond sloppy, and it wasnt even the right damn color. what I really hate about it is the way the hands just ... emerged from the headlights without any possible way to do so.

I've seen better.

03-28-2006, 09:11 AM
Reading this thread makes me wonder if people actually know what goes into making something like this. Personally, except for the headlight/hands thing, I am very impressed; a good sense of weight, a realistic transformation (sloppy? Not even slightly. You are looking at a living vehicle turning into a bipedal machine, complete with centre-of-gravity changes and balance issues; stop expecting everything to move perfectly in time with everything else), and some absolutely beautiful lighting work. This guy needs to be hired. Now.
And holy shit, I wish I could texture like that. Whole separate artform from modelling, believe it.
And on the subject of the colour scheme; go read the original thread. He gives his reasons for the colour scheme used.

I'm with Draven. I've done limited 3D work on various projects here and there, and let me tell you, what this guy did is amazing. Now, seriously, I don't like the idea of a flat-nosed Prime in this day and age, because I've only seen one flat-nose in the last five years, and that sitting in the middle of a field along the interstate. I also question the hand/headlight thing. But outside of that, this was absolutely outstanding.

A taste of things to come indeed. Sure some parts may be loose, but imagine if the person who did this had the resources that ILM has. Long Live Optimus Prime.

Not found of the design, but Draven is right, the guy did amazing work. He should be hired for the movie, with him a part of a team of animators, they would surely compliment each others skills well and we would have a nice blend of realism and style.

Sweet zombie Jesus!! That was bloody amazing!! IF only the truck was red, huh? :D
Now, since that 'bot looked like Ultra Magnus, who reckons this guy ought to do a full Ultra Magnus transform sequence - that'd be cool!!

I wish the head had moved slightly, or the eyes had lit up to faint blue. It looks good (and mostly moves realistically), but I wish it had more of a sense of life to it.

That is a very impressive and no doubt very time consuming piece of art. The only thing I 'm not too sure about is the head. It looks a bit flat, but I think that's mostly down to the angle. The shifting from horizontal to vertical is seemless, the shifting of the front wheels a neat touch. The only missed opurtunity was leaving the mirrors extended. It would help the robotmode if they were retracted in some way.

As to those who have complained about the TF scheme being old fashioned, I think that was rather the point. This is G1 Primne, or rather Magnus, as if it were real. I suspect that the artist looked at the old toy and thought 'I'll have a go at that'. And, unfortunately, the hands were the area in which the original design fell down.

As I said, I'm very, very impressed.

Just as an example, many others have done the same. Why is everyone knocking it? It's Fan Made for God's sake. FREAKING AMAZING STUFF!!!! Bet most of you couldn't do that if your life depended on it.

what was sloppy? was he supposed to jump and spin around so fast that we dont drool over the dramatically suspenseful transformation we never focus on when we watch the show?

the computer doesn't know it's over 20 years old. why does he have to completely re-engineer something that's already made? why does he have to fix a flaw in an old design? how much more time would it take to make everyone happy? it doesn't matter because time is relative. i doubt he made this piece to show off that kind of engineering ability.

you gotta love art critics; they think their opinions count and they think we should always focus on the bad things.

Bahamut Prime
03-29-2006, 12:02 AM
Not bad... not bad at all! What it could need is maybe the G1 transformation sound, but that's just my opinion. I wonder how the movie'll turn out?

zzyss
03-29-2006, 03:08 AM
I think the most impressive thing about this is that it was (presumably) done all by one guy. This makes it all the more respectable, since as various people have pointed out, he has a great appreciation for:

- lighting
- texturing
- 3D animation
- Real world physics
- Transformers
- G1 Prime
- camera angles and tricks
- backdrops and environments
- etc.

The list goes on and on.

Seriously, for those guys who complain about the hands, where do you *expect* them to come from? It's not exactly like a transforming truck is the epitome of realism. Plus, that's a very long and arduous transformation. I doubt the transformation process in the movie to last more than 2 seconds. Style over substance.

David Hingtgen
03-29-2006, 04:07 AM
I really want to know what pic he used as a reference to model the truck itself. It's even closer than the closest one I have a photo of. It's still not PERFECT (wheel arches) but it's even closer than the best I've found.

I still lean towards it being a Freightliner FL86, but the model isn't certain, and the year especially isn't--a guy I've talked to who drove old Freightliner cabovers said the older ones had angled wheel arches like G1 Prime's toy, so I'll assume late 70's.

If there's one thing the internet gets an "F" on, it's info on semi trucks. You can go to Peterbilt.com today and not find a thing, even basics like height/weight/length of the various models they make. Trying to research older ones is almost futile--best you can do is browse pics and hope for a detailed caption. Kind of funny--you can get detailed specs on the most secret, advanced military hardware online---but nothing on old trucks!
