NEW YORK - Two small, struggling television networks, UPN and WB, will merge to form a new network called The CW, executives from the companies that own them said Tuesday.

The announcement was made by executives from CBS Corp., which owns UPN, and Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., which owns WB.

Both UPN and WB had struggled to compete against larger rivals in the broadcast TV business, including Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, News Corp.'s Fox, General Electric Co.'s NBC and CBS Corp.'s CBS.

The new network will launch in the fall, the executives said, and both UPN and WB will shut down. It will be a 50-50 partnership between Warner Bros. and CBS, and the network will be carried on stations owned by the Tribune Co., which is a minority owner of the WB network.

Among the Tribune's TV stations that will join the new network are its flagship WGN in Chicago as well as WPIX in New York, and KTLA in Los Angeles.

Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp., said the new network will air 30 hours of programming seven days a week aimed in part at young audiences.

Barry Meyer, the head of Warner Bros., said the network would be run by the current executives of UPN and WB.

What would "The CW" be an acronym for?

Interspersed between their programming will be subliminal messages flashed on the screen like "YOU LIKE OUR COMEDY" and "BUY LOONEY TUNES PRODUCTS" and "SHOP AT THE WB STORE"

I doubt that even subliminal brainwashing could make american sitcoms funny.

And the combined 14 viewers all cried out in agony over not being able to watch reruns of such classic shows like, "Jerry Springer" and every single classic NBC and CBS comedy.

Maybe if UPN and the WB didn't have 14 different Primetime Soap Operas, they might do a little better. Even people that like those shows can't have the stamina to watch them all.

I've thought that both of these Companies needed to do something to stay alive. Since UPN was on about the second day of programming and WB on the third.

Important question alert! Important question alert!

That's the only show I watch on either of those channels, at least since Buffy/Angel ended. Buffy jumped from WB to UPN for the last two seasons; I don't even know what channel number UPN is now.

UPN plays Mavericks games and my town is just about to get a UPN channel.

I'm going to be very upset if this messes up my ability to watch Mavs games.

I thought you were in Dallas (or close to it)? Or are you in one of the 30-odd small towns around DFW that may not have the local UPN affiliate?

Can't say I expected the WB to merge or even want to merge with UPN. UPN has some variety in its weekly line up while the WB is as snowwhite as can be except for My Wife and Kids which is in re-runs. I found some info on the merger and it said the new network would target youths and minorities and given that the WB is involved I can't help but think its a joke they bring nothing to the table for the latter. Now if the new CW wrestled George Lopez(a WB production) away from ABC, than I could see how the new network might cater to minories as I dont believe UPN shows feature many/any hispanics. I do feel sorry for those who will lose their jobs in the merger.

I'm only worried about Smallville. Screw UPN and the idiots that ruined Trek.

I've always wanted to see what would happen when white teenage dramas clash with black stereotype sitcoms.

Watch out!

I couldn’t even tell you what channels those networks where on here. I think one of them is on channel 13 but I don’t know which one.

Watch out!

Oooh! Oooh!

It'd be like West Side Story!

With a cast of unrealistically and impossibly beautiful young people!

Updated for modern audiences!

With less singing!

And more stereotypes!

Set in outer space!

With washed up has-beens as special guest stars!

And "proactive, socially conscious life-messages"!

Smallville and SUpernatural are safe:

(snipped from AOL)
The initial CW programming list: Beauty and the Geek, Smallville, Gilmore Girls, Supernatural and Reba from WB; America's Next Top Model, Veronica Mars, Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends and wrestling (Smackdown) from UPN.

I could careless about everwood but it not being on the list doesn't suggesst its gone it just means its not part of the intial line up. They will probably work in one on one and cuts from UPN at some point as well if they do I hope cuts gets better.

Wb are you ready? Yea brotha!

UPN you ready? Like totally for sure!

Combine to form super asstacular crappy network!

Yes that's right one station where stereotypes of black people can mingle with stereotypes of suburban wussies. Oh and to through off things a bit we's throw in a good show or 2.
