View Full Version : Recommend a cheap Robotech

I'm interested in Macross/Robotech figures, but I got pretty burned on this disappointing guy because I wanted a cheap one. Parts keep falling off or getting misaligned, two different parts broke within two days of opening it, etc etc.
So is there a reasonably good quality Robotech figure to get and fiddle around with, without breaking the bank? I want something that's less than $40 total, transformable to all 3 modes, with the armor parts, without falling apart or breaking. I guess that excludes model kits?
Also, a rundown of the basic Robotech/Macross body types would be great. Some of them seem to be repaints of each other with new heads, while others have different transformations. You know what I mean.

This set is all over eBay and a few online stores for around 50$ (for both fig and weapon pack)
It's a great starter set and good quality

You can get the figure alone for $30.

Or the red MIRIYA VF-1J for $30

Those Toynami's are probably the most affordable
There's also a Bandai VF-1J Valkyrie for $35 which is great. Just like Skyfire except for the head

Sweet! I see a Ben Dixon here on BBTS (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=TOY10008&mode=retail) that looks good. Apparently it has poseable fingers? I'm a sucker for those. And a pilot figure, too. I think when my BW 10th wave 1 set arrives there, I'll package them together.
And I forgot to link to the tiny one I got burned on- it's this one. (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=BNP10001&mode=retail) It's almost fun to carve out a better socket for a ball joint, but it's a pain in the butt too. Stay away from Banpresto Macrosses, that's my advice.
Thanks for the help, ken and Chaos!

I lucked out a year or so back and got a Ben Dixon VF-1A for 10 bucks at a Game Stop. It is nice to fiddle with. I really want a Yamamoto version though, but they are way to expensive for me.

You can get that same one BBTS has at Digital-toys (http://www.digital-toys.com/robotech3.html)
for $10 cheaper, and use that extra $10 to get the Max Strike Super Poseable they have in stock in their Robotech-Toynami section.
They're really cool figures that display awesomely, but they don't transform.
Ordered many toys from them, they're great to deal with.
Just in case.

The banpresto valk IS good to repaint into a WST Jetfire, so don't junk it, repaint it!

I cant speak for CM but I have all of the MPs currently made to date and all of the ones I have had no issues untill I recieved my Vol. 3 Alpha which had a broken wing which Digital-Toys.com replaced without a hassle. other than that everything is just perfect. You can toy with them transforming them and such but they are mainly Show pieces to display. I do pick them up every so often just to marvel at their detail. But all in all I heard the higher numbered one are safer from any QC issues.

Nice find! Still, instead of the poseable guy, I might get the deformed morpher. Or something TF clearance-y.
And as for repainting into Jetfire, first I have to turn him into a properly functioning figure. Which involves whittling, dremelling, regluing broken parts, and boiling and reshaping the softer plastic. Check back in five years.

Sadly Robotech/Macross figures and the words "cheap and affordable" don't go hand in hand...:(
