Arguably the best puzzle game ever made, Tetris will be getting a brand new installment on the Nintendo DS. Nintendo today announced the game in a no frills (or screenshots) press release which gives the game's release date as March 20. So you don't have long to wait and it joins Metroid Prime: Hunters' to become the next two DS games to utilize the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
So what are we getting in this Tetris? Modes like those in Tetris Attacks and Tetris Worlds? It doesn't seem so. Instead, we'll be getting classic Tetris along with new modes that utilize the DS's unique features.
Each of the six modes of play features a theme based on a classic Nintendo francise, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid.
In addition to the single player modes, Tetris DS allows up to 10 DS users to connect wirelessly with a single cart. If no other DS owners are nearby, Tetris can also be played on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in 2-4 player battles. It includes a point-based rating system based on players' battle results. Opponents can see one another's ratings, which indicate their skill levels. No word on whether the game will have lobbies or any kind of chat, but we're sure friend codes will used again.
Sadly, we have no screenshots or trailers for Tetris DS, despite the March 20 release date. As soon as some pop up, you'll see them here.
