View Full Version : Final Fantasy III (DS)

Apparently at some point in 2005 or 2006, FINAL FANTASY III will be released on the revolutionary NINTENDO DS. Is it a direct port of the original Super NES game or an updated port much like the GBA's FF 1 & 2: Dawn of Souls? Or is it an all new remake of the classic masterpiece that fully utilizes the full potential (touch-screen, voice recording, etc.) of Nintendo's newest handheld system?
Any thoughts, information, or screenshots of the game will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, what the US knows as Final Fantasy III is Final Fantasy VI. This is the REAL FFIII.
And it's the only huge reason I want a DS. I want one for the new Castlevania to a lesser extent.
*EDIT* And I'm with you, ginrai. I wish 3 could have been a PlayStation release since I already have 1-2 and 4-10 for it.

If you actually played the game you would not say that. FF III is an awesome game.

Well I can bet it's going to at least be as good as 1&2 dawn of souls which was dropjaw awsome (though I admit I'v not finished 2) I'm betting this will either be a 2D update in that style or a full 3D remake. But deffinately something more than a port.

I like the idea of a "Final Fantasy Collection" that would have to be made up in to three or four volumes.
Volume One:
- Final Fantasy
- Final Fantasy II
- Final Fantasy III
Volume Two:
- Final Fantasy IV
- Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
- Final Fantasy V
- Final Fantasy VI
Volume Three:
- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy VIII
- Final Fantasy IX
Volume Four
- Final Fantasy Tactics
- Some of the GameBoy Final Fantasy ports (I know it's under a different name in Japan but I don't care bite me)

I think they'd leave Mystic Quest out since it was never released in Japan. That was made cause Square thought everyone in North America had the brains of a child, and we couldn't handle "real" RPGs. Mystic Quest is a pre-schoolers game.

More likely 1-3, and each one after that released individually. If it was just a direct port, MAYBE they would squeeze 4 and 5 in together.
Of course, it's already been confirmed that 3 is standalone, so shut it up, me.
I hope they do a Final Fatasy VI on the DS. I'll get that one. Fantasy 1 is okay, I just got the last crystal thing and I'm already Lv. 80. I get lost and every two steps I make I'm in battle. So leveling up is no problem in this game.
Also need a Chrono Trigger remake for the DS. Other then Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger is the only other RPG I passed.

If FINAL FANTASY III (DS) is this Japanese-exclusive title which was released on either the Famicom or Super Famicom, then why the DS? It could easily be put on the Game Boy Advance if it is just a straight port of original FF3.
I believe that the DS game is a slightly altered version of this with updated graphics and touch screen controls. For the cinematic scenes, I just hope it looks like anime.

FFIII was on the Famicom. I'm almost certain they'll update the graphics to look more like IV-VI, like they did with FF Origins and Dawn of Souls. I doubt it will have new content (like Dawn of Souls) because it hasn't been re-relreased before. Probably just updated graphics and touch-screen menus.
As for why it's on the DS, Nintendo probably wanted something high-profile from Square-Enix to help sell their new handheld. And I think the last Final Fantasy to be re-released fits the criteria. Although I'm not sure why Square-Enix waited this long and didn't release it on the PlayStation like every other game.

Well since FFIII(DS) will almost certainly be released in both North America and Japan, Square-Enix might alter the original game to give its Japanese customers a new reason to buy the game.

If I understood correctly from past articles, Final Fantasy III (originally for Japanese Famicon aka Nintendo Entertainment System NES) was going to be on the DreamSwan and was scheduled to be, and then was dropped when the DreamSwan stopped being successful and due to Square-Enix throwing ALL their resources in to Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy XII, and more updates for Final Fantasy XII.
Simply put: Man-power on other instant-classic titles was more of a precadent

mystic quest was released in japan as final fantasy usa. the game was made in japanese first but they intentionally left loads of extra space to make it easy for ted woolsey to translate

You mean the Bandai's WonderSwan? Probably, since that was the system the first re-release of FF1&2. Then the WonderSwan versions were modified and ported to the PS as FF Origins, and then re-ported to the GBA as Dawn of Souls.

Remember to keep an eye on E3 this week. The show is up for three days, May 18th, 19th(SW:RotS day), and the 20th, thats Wednesday to Friday. E3 2005 will likely reveal a lot about Final Fantasy 3 (DS) and not to mention all of the other upcoming Final Fantasy projects.

I wonder if they will mod FF3(J) to be more like the original plan and heavily airship reliant. There where originally going to be modyfyable airships and what-not but they didn't pull it off because it whas a bit too advanced for the NES.
I don't get why to port it to the DS though because the game doesn't need any extras.
BTW; Square Enix didn't waste any manpower on Dragon Quest 8. They enlisted the help of Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle makers Level 5 for that one.
The manpower whas wasted on things like Drakengard and Unlimited SaGa though.

I'd rather see a FF Collection released for the PSP.
And you feel the need to bring up your psp v. ds bias again why? This is not at discussion about the PSP. He is asking for details on the DS version. Let it go or don't bring it up.
If I wanted to hear you or people like you bitch about which is better, I'd go to [strictly] video game forums, not transformers forums or read threads like 'psp v ds - sound off'.
Thankfully, strscrm has been able to privide some information on it. Thank you, strscrm.

For the Record, I would rather have a Collection for the PSP or the GBA than the the DS too.
Not to be Obnoxious.. just becuase i think the systems are less Awkward.
Though beyond that, I would still rather have it on PS1 to complete my set of FF games.

For the record, I have no anti-sonybias. Hell, I own and love my ps2 but I sold off my NGC. I only have an issue when someone, each and everytime he can, interjects with a 'psp is better' comment.
This is not the first thread where an unnecessary comment like that has come from him.
If this is the kind of post I am going to see everytime I enter a handheld game thread, I will be staying out of them. I am at a loss as to why anytime there is a discussion regarding a single handheld unit someone has to point out why the system is so flawed when compared to their favored system when said game is not on their favored system. Guess what, the game is not on the PSP, PS2, XBox, etc. There, at least in my mind, is no need to say how much better it COULD be on a different system. This game is on the DS. We have DS hardware to use. That is it, at least right now. If, on the other hand, the game was coming out for both the DS and the PSP, I could understand completely why we might debate the superior version. It's not.
**edit re: "anti-sony bias":
I forgot to mention these important facts about how not anti sony I am.
As I look over my shoulder to my stereo I see a big shiny sony logo. Yup, my primary stereo is a Sony, alright.
When I check my PDA I am checking a sony product (a Clie)
Most importantly, even as I type this I am using a sony product - my sony viao laptop.
It would seem that I prefer sony products over most others. Making that assumption would be a making a correct one.

Square-Enix is too busy with Advent Children to care about anything else hasn't anyone realized that by now...I mean look at all the trailers...the different packages...the FF7 titles...I mean come on...I think AC is the real reason why Kingdom Hearts 2, and Final Fantasy 12 are delayed...they want to milk 7 before they have to beat it as a dead horse

Actually, III is great. It's like FFI, but you have like 20 jobs and change classes in the middle of the game.
P.S. everyone can equip two weapons. Ignore shields. ;)
strscrm

But without the shields, you're wide open to attack, but on the other hand, two weapons means double the attack. Sure the graphics of the modern ones are great, but I love the old FF games a lot more, with the exception of FF7 which is the best ever.
Also, where did you see the pics for FF3(DS)? The way you describe it, it sounds like the failed upgrade of 3 for the Wonder Swan Color.
