Dear Hasbro PR team/customer service reps/dudes who are bored in Pawtucket,
Thank you for putting together the Transformers Animated cartoon series and its toyline. I am having a lot of fun with the cartoon and with the toys and I wanted to tell you why.
- THE CARTOON IS PRETTY AND FUN:
Above all else, I love the colors and the flow of in Transformers: Animated. The animation is very bold and stylized; the Teen Titans/Batman The Animated Series/Justice League aesthetic lends itself very nicely to this show. Because of the cartoon aesthetic you guys have chosen to use is already stylized, it helps to make Big robots seem bigger, smaller robots seem smaller and tougher robots seem downright scary. On top of that, the colors are nice and bright in every episode, making it delicious eye candy. This is one hell of a fun show to munch my cheerios to; I can't take my eyes off the screen because I'm having so much fun watching and hearing Transformers do what they used to do when I munched cheerios in my heydey - turn into big robots via that classic transforming sound and either A) try to unravel today's plot device or B) beat the nuts and bolts out of each other. So far, in all honesty, there hasn't been a moment where I've cringed at the art or the voices or the script; I've just let each episode play out in full because I don't want to miss a minute of this very beautifully-drawn show.
- THE CARTOON IS INTELLIGENT:
This is a great American cartoon show. I might go so far as to say that this is what a lot of American (and, maybe, English-speaking) audiences have been hoping for since the original '84-'86 cartoon show went off the air - a 'toon with witty dialogue with enough hints at a "bigger picture" story to keep kids ages 3-30 interested. I have to admit that the writing - particularly the use of modern technology terms mixed into the Autobot and Decepticon dialogue - is clever and entertaining; it's fun to hear the robots in disguise throw out curses like "put that in your RAM and process it!" The other little plot clues dropped left and right between the weekly episode's plot makes the show fun to come back to every week. Additionally, the way your creative team decided to handle character development was very wisely handled - we, as fans, have come to know Optimus Prime, Ratchet, Bulkhead, Bumblebee and Prowl very well and we also have a pretty good idea about the levels of evil to which Megatron, Starscream, Blitzwing and Lugnut will drop to in order to conquer the universe.
The "New Guy of the Week" design for the episodes is also, in my opinion, a wise idea. Fans clamor for new characters from the Transformers universe to show up left and right, and by dropping them in for an episode or two and them taking them right out afterwards means that you can both satisfy the obssessed fan and surprise the casual fan. Instead of having to wrangle with drawing them into every episode or giving them token "Here's my superpower!" lines of dialogue when they need introduction, you give each individual New Guy of the Week a chance to shine on his/her own - we got a very good idea of just why Blackarachnia is so deceitful, just how treacherous Swindle is, just how plain goofy Wreckgar can be, etc. Additionally, it's good writing that these characters just "disappear" for the time being, so they can be brought back into the fold later.
- THE TOYLINE WAS DESIGNED BRILLIANTLY:
I think you guys were handed a nugget of gold with Animated, when it comes to turning a cartoon into toys. Because of the bold colors in the series and the basic, yet stylized design of the characters, you were left with some interesting design challenges - how do we make a robot who has a lot of artistic foreshortening and body-stretching in the cartoon look every bit as imposing/sleek/evil in the toyline? Quite honestly, I think you've handled the job in spades - they few toys I own just ooze character and really reflect their cartoon counterparts. Prowl is nimble and stringy, capable of being posed (or played with!) in a variety of different Kung Fu (or, sorry, Circuit-Su) martial arts moves. LockDown is tall and imposing, with all the right bits and pieces from the cartoon making him look all the more evil and duplicitous, right down to the smirk on his face. Ratchet looks just as grumpy in toy form as he does in the cartoon, right down to the notches on his face and his missing repair device on his arm. The robot counterparts look really nice and - at least, to my untrained eye - seem to match their cartoon selves with accuracy. There's no need for a "Premium series" of toys this time - you guys nailed it on the first try.
So, all in all, a big thanks to everyone involved in the Transformers: Animated cartoon and the toyline - you guys have offered us a lot of fun to be had, and I've enjoyed all of it so far. I think you guys have hit on a great formula and I hope you keep it up.

Armada & Energon might've been crap but CYBERTRON was totally awesome! You guys cannot continue to ignore Cybertron! Cybertron was one of the best TF toy lines so far with incredible sculpts, memorable characters & great variety of vehicles & beasts. And it was one of the best shows along with G1 & Beast Wars. It looked better than anything in G1 or Beast Wars, especially the toy accurate transformations. Just because the US lumped it in with the Unicron Trilogy doesn't mean you have to keep bashing it along with the UT. It really wasn't part of the UT. Give some credit where credit is due!:mad

QFT!
Also, it wouldn't matter if you did or not... walking into a thread with this title it's obvious that he was just looking to wave his 'Cybertron is the greatest' banner around to get some attention. I'm really not sure why as no one really bashes Cybertron (not like Armada & Energon) and many people even comment on their inability to wait for it on DVD in another month. It just doesn't get the praise that BW & Animated seem to have encured, because while Cybertron was mediocre at worst and just plain good at best those two shows are excellent a great deal of the time.
Also, OwaT, I totally agree with everything said in the letter. :thumb You've summed up my thoughts on this series very very nicely.

Animated is some fine storytelling. The toys are pure addictive. I was only going to buy Megs. Lockdown and Prowl BLEW me away. Then buying BA is beyond belief. 10 upgrades above the anything before it. The tech is moving so far ahead. My question is that Optimus the only supreme in the line?

I must be watching the wrong episodes, because the ones I've seen have been pretty poor.
As for the toys, they've forstalled my retirement from TF collecting. There are still some I have no interest in (Bulkhead, Lugnut, Snarl), but the ones I have shocked the heck out of me.

I agree with the spirit of this thread, and I would echo many of the sentiments expressed. I have not been this genuinely excited about a TF series since Beast Wars.
The cartoon, while perhaps not as sophisticated as Beast Wars and Beast Machines, holds its own because it doesn't take itself too seriously. It is just pure fun. Have there been a couple of stinkers in the series? Sure. But overall, the show is a joy to watch, especially with kids.
The toys... Well, I have mixed feelings. Kudos for pulling off an amazing feat of duplicating alt modes and robot modes for such stylized character designs. There are some truly inspired designs. And I am a big fan of the look and feel of the plastic. However.... and this is a big however.... I still contend that overall, the figures in TFA are too fragile and frankly break apart far too easily. I think this is very valid and very important feedback, and I hope Hasbro takes it to heart for future releases in the series.
All that said, I hope TFA has many more good years to come. I daresay (and I know I'm probably in the minority here) I am more excited about the future of TFA than I am about the next live-action movie.

Cybertron was a crappy, stupid, pointless show with boring plotlines, dull characters, a nonsensical plot in the original (which only made sense when it was retconned into the UT, and then threw in a whole host of other problems), dull, expressionless characters who were only slightly better than the lego-blocks in Energon, Animation that didn't blend at all with the traditional elements, and was an overall waste of what should have been a great premise (Differing TF Colonies and CUltures). The entire Soundwave/Sideways/PlanetX Plot line was the single most stupid, pointless, waste of cool characters that Transformers has EVER done.
Cybertron is only slightly better than Energon, and way, way worse than Armada and RID.

What cracked me up was hearing Aaron Archer admit at BotCon that the robots in Cybertron were given regional accents to help kids differentiate between the characters, since their personalities were so underdeveloped.
Which is why year after year, throughout the whole A/E/C ordeal, on every Hasbro survey, I emphasized the need to develop good characters that viewers will care about. Create compelling personalities and you make the robots appealing, and you will sell even more toys. Animated succeeds perfectly in this measure. I agree with this all, this is indeed best show since Beast Wars. I found myself into the A/C cartoons, Energon never intreseted me and I never liked it, but Animated has gotten me completely hooked the story lines are funny and well written for all ages.
The toy line is amazing, they are so dead on to their show counterparts for the most part even when their colors are messed up(glares at Starscream). The toys are also fun to play with and look great. Personally I think this line sets the bar for all future lines. All I can conclude with is, don't let Animated die Hasbro please.

As far as the first post goes, agreed in every way. The movie was pretty cool and revived some of the memories and emotions I had for G1 as a kid, but Animated has gone above and beyond. It has me more hooked than I ever have been, and I REALLY wanted that damn Targetmaster Hot Rod back in the 80s... Now I REALLY want the whole line, hands down. The show is great and keeps me on my toes. They go in directions I would never expect (Sari has no identity? The Constructicons are THESE two guys?) and satisfy the G1 fan in me at every corner. I have no expectations for the series, just excitement to see the next episode.
But damn these toys hit the sweet spot. They're everything I ever wanted from Transformers without knowing it. Scale and minor QC aside, they're perfect. And to think I shuddered in disgust when I saw that first picture of the Autobots...

When I first saw the Animated pics I didn't think they looked bad at all, I decided I wasn't going to judge the show on looks alone (which is why some people hated Beast Wars at first, what with their "anti-animal mode" arguments... and I'm not gonna lie, a lot of the Beast Machines Maximal designs were ugly lol) and it turns out it was good to think that way. It's all about the writing.
And I'd like to give major kudos to the writers for making the humans in the show likeable. I mean, the reason I didn't like the previous three shows was because the humans were so obnoxious, un necessary, and were too much the focus of the show. In Animated they're all likeable, I like Sumdac. I like Sari. I think Fanzone and his "I hate machines" philosophy is hilarious! I even like the lame but "ya gotta like 'em" villains like Headmaster, Angry Archer, and Meltdown!

Yeah, my reactions were pretty much along this line too. When the first pic came out I was "OMG, what the hell did those idiots do to Optimus!?". When I saw the second pic I was "Nice line up, but DAMN ARE THEY UGLY!".
I honestly didn't start liking the show until I gave it a chance when the pilot aired (at the behest of my wife when she reminded me of how I had originally missed out on BW until she convinced me to watch it). After that I was hooked on the show, but I 'didn't like the designs enought to buy the toys'. That philosophy laster until about six episodes in and suddenly the characters were so awesome that I needed to own versions of these individuals.
Amazing how good writing can change one's mind about something isn't it?

For 29 episodes, we have not been let down.

I feel awful.
I really do.
I'm a huge TF toy nut. I usually skip the TV series and just collect the toys. In fact, the last series I watched start-to-finish was Beast Wars and that was... wow, 10 years ago. I feel old.
Sadly, I'm not in a great financial situation right now and I'm skipping the entire Animated line. Of course, I can still watch the TV show for free and I've only just started watching a few weeks ago ("Autoboot camp" was my first episode).
Now I realise I've made a huge mistake, and I've missed out on the beat series since Beast Wars. I thought Animated was going to be more of the same, just in a different animation style, but it's not. It's not just slavish 1984-G1 references, it's a mix of everything the franchise has done so far. From early Generation 1 to Pretenders to Beast Wars to entirely new and fresh things!
I still hate the mouth on Optimus, but it's a small price to pay for one of the best TF television series, with characters that are as great and memorable as the legendary cast of Beast Wars.

People need to be more responsible with their positivity. Animated as a toyline at least has a number of serious flaws and if all they see is people being all Thank you Hasbro :D they're not going to feel the need to make changes.
Because most of the "whiners" were chased out during the movie fiasco I don't think we're going to see Hasbro really improve themsleves that much. Universe looks pretty ridiculous too. There's just not enough criticism when Hasbro does something dodgy.
But with the toyline, Bumblebee for example is awful. His transformation isn't fun, and even if you like it, the plastic is still terrible. Many of the TFs have serious problems with their Transformation, and have bizarre flaws like Grimlock's ars not being straight.
It's actually quite poorly designed. Peopl think Oh how they actually look like the animation models! But it's no great feat. It just so happened they were easier to translate to toys than was thought. I could try to explain conceptually why it works rather easily, but I'm not sure how.
I'm just disappointed because Animated looked so amazing at first.

But with the toyline, Bumblebee for example is awful. His transformation isn't fun, and even if you like it, the plastic is still terrible. Many of the TFs have serious problems with their Transformation, and have bizarre flaws like Grimlock's ars not being straight.
i have grimlock theres nothing at all wrong with him

Thanks Hasbro!
I'll admit, Beast Wars is awesome. But Tf Animated is the best G1 remake i have ever seen!

Cybertron is a perfect example of how trying to change the plot (trying to put it in the Unicron trilogy) and doing awful dubbing can ruin a show, I think Galaxy Force was a great show (too much stock animation though) but its been over shadowed by the terribleness of Cybertron unfortunately.
I have yet to really sit down and watch Animated (no idea when or even if its showing in the UK) and as for the toys I'm more interested in Classics 2.0/Henkei at the moment

I do love what they have done with TF .. ^^ the figures are tip top and the show is killer..... how ever.. If and when they make the "Female Starscream" who I know is Thunderblast... And she in turn is just a simple new color pallet for starscream.... > ( I will find ever one produced, melt them down, and drop you in that scolding hot, lavish plastic bath! its not the 80's any more! that crap doesn't fly!
Its not hard to make a slimmer fem frame for her. and whose to say she even has to be the same jet? transformers can..... change forms. http://www.cyberfembot.com/Images/front_page_news/falica_in_colour_by_Blitz_Wing.jpg
of sorts.
any ways. Amazing job so far!!

on the subject of writing, sentinal prime is one of the best written characters ive ever seen in an animated show, he doesnt seem to do alot wrong but already every transfan hates him :)
