View Full Version : Classics 2.0 Ultra Class Onslaught

OK. Got this guy this morning (along with Powerglide, who I'll be reviewing later). I know D Banks has one of his awesome video reviews of this guy up, so I'll put my review in here so as to not hijack his thread.
PART ONE - VEHICLE MODE
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Vehicle/01.jpg
GOOD GOD. THIS THING LOOKS MEAN AS HELL.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Vehicle/02.jpg
Onslaught's alt mode is a 6 wheeled SWAT van, and a very mean one at that. He feels extremely solid in alt mode; very playable. The gun turret on top can rotate 90 degrees left and right, but the gun barrels don't elevate. This leads to one of my two only real problems with the toy; the barrels attach in the same way as Leader Class movie Brawl's; they're not as easy to pop out as his, but be careful you don't lose them anyway.
Onslaught has 2 huge thingumies that fold down on the front; I really wouldn't want to be the poor Autobot who gets hit by them. You can really imagine Onslaught rumbling towards someone and doing them some serious damage.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Vehicle/03.jpg
Sound & Light gimmicks in vehicle mode:
-Rolling him makes an engine sound
-Pressing a button on the back of the turret alternately produces gun sounds and siren sounds
The large SWAT shield on top of Onslaught's vehicle mode is removable; the turret is very nicely detailed underneath. A rather cool touch is that there is a panel on the shield that moves, so you can activate the sounds with it attached by pressing the panel down.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Vehicle/04.jpg
A nice little by-product of Onslaught's transformation is that the hatch on top of the SWAT van opens! That's just COOL.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Vehicle/06.jpg
Onslaught's alt mode is superb. A nice, chunky, extremely mean looking vehicle with some nasty weaponry. Fantastic. 9/10.

PART TWO - ROBOT MODE
Transformation is fairly simple: his legs take up most of the time it takes to get him into robot mode. No great surprises to be found here really.
Anyway. Robot mode.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Robot/01.jpg
Oh yes. This is DEFINITELY Onslaught. The colours, the wheels on the legs, guns on the back... unmistakable IMO.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Robot/02.jpg
His head sculpt is fantastic; a really nice update of the original.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Robot/03.jpg
Onslaught has articulation in his hips, knees, mid-thigh, shoulders, mid-upper-arm, wrists, elbows, and head (no balljoint, but can rotate 360 degrees). He's very stable in robot mode, and nicely posable.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Robot/04.jpg
The sound and light gimmicks from his alt mode are carried over to his robot mode; the button on the back produces the same sounds, but this time you can also see his visor light up. The huge claw thingumies from his alt mode can be folded out in his robot mode, making him look unfeasibly mean. His right arm has a spring loaded gun attached to it. His shield can either stay on his back, or attach to his left arm - a piece folds out to attach it to.
And now, my other gripe with him - his legs. The grey pieces that cover the alt mode's front wheels when you transform him don't like staying in place. they only peg in, and because you have to tab the front of his legs into them as well, either the pegs tend to pop back out or the front tab pops out. It's a minor thing, but vaguely irritating. However, that and the gun barrel issue mentioned in the alt mode review are literally the ONLY things that bug me about him.
CONCLUSION
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Robot/05.jpg
If you were to look in a dictionary for the definition of "I AM GOING TO F*CK YOU UP", you'd see a picture of Classics 2.0 Onslaught. There's just something about him, in both modes, that simply screams badass. He's very solid and extremely playable in both modes, he has a good transformation, neat gimmicks, a superb colour scheme that definitely evokes the original - in short, he is exactly what the Classics line is all about. An all-round superb figure. 9.5/10.

Excellent review Draven (did that come from D&D Shadow over Mystara? Just curious)!
Text reviews are God-sent at work here where online videos are blocked. Not that I'd like to risk watching anyway. Have been wanting to get this bad boy and oyur excellent pics & review have only strengthened my intend to do so! :thumbs2:

Awesome review Draven. Looking at your figure and compairing them with the Henkei version what stands out as being different? I am on the fence on which one to get but I can not find any bold differences.

Honestly? I can't see any difference at all. I have to say, though, that in my opinion it'd be VERY hard to make any colour changes that would improve him; he's pretty damn spot-on as it is.

If only real S.W.A.T. vehicles were so mean looking.
Onslaught looks like he'd be more appropriate for "Terrifying Weapons and Tactics".
Any possibility of a look at the instructions or some in-progress leg transformations? Those legs look interesting. About the only thing that doesn't look superb on him, honestly, is the rear view, with his "junk-in-da-trunk" skidplate.

Man, I really love Onslaught, but this figure just doesn't look worth my money. Maybe if they had made him a Voyager.
My only real grip is the wrists and the legs. the legs look terrible, IMO, but It will be a first when I totally dismiss a figure just because of his/her legs. the wrists have the same problem with not rotating for proper poses.
Still, the design as a hole is nice and I'm surprised I've never seen him with the ridiculous sheild off. His vehicle mode looks so much better. (even though it's not a truck like G1 or similar)

If Hasbro don't want to use the word "slag", there's unfortunately NO way they would use the word "TWAT". ;)

OK, a step-by-step:
1. Open out the panels as shown.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/01.jpg
2. Pull the van sides out at the front. The grey pieces are hinged to allow you to do this (they clip onto the upper part of the van on the inside).
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/03.jpg
3. Swing the legs down.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/04.jpg
4. Open out the grey panel on the leg.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/05.jpg
5. Fold the panel with the van's front wheel inwards.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/06.jpg
6. Close the grey panel again.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/07.jpg
7. Fold the front of the leg (van side) onto the grey panel. It locates with a tab.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/08.jpg
8. Legs finished.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/09.jpg
9. Fold down the headlights, and pull out the van front sides.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/10.jpg
10. Straighten out the arms.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/emperorpete/Toys/Transformers/Classics2-0/Onslaught/Transform/11.jpg
11. Swing the van cab down. The van front clips onto the robot body.

I appear to have missed a couple of things off when I did the review; first up, he does have rotating wrists. I just found them because they were really night.
Second, Folding in the panels on the end of his feet. Totally forgot to do that, and it makes him look a lot better.

It's involved, but it's intuitive. Which is exactly how I've always liked TFs to be; none of the headaches of figures like RID Sideburn, where you know what it's supposed to look like, but that's sometimes all you've got. ;)
Check out the edit, bro; I found a couple of things and addressed your gripes. He might be about to gain more points. :)

The wrists are awesome news (the gap doesn't bother me at all) and the feet look way better, though the legs themselves still look a little fudged, I can live with them more now that I see the feet can look more like robot feet.
So far, three confirmed buys for Universe mainline figs for me.

Hot damn, he looks amazing! Been hoping for a good pics-and-text review. Thanks, d00d!
Looking at your figure and compairing them with the Henkei version what stands out as being different?
As far as I can tell from pics of each, the main difference looks to be the deco on the head. Where Hasbro's is black with silver on the sides of the face, Takara's has a black forehead, silver mouthplate, and blue on the sides. Plus, I'm sure they'll cram some inappropriate chrome on there somewhere. :rolleyes2

There's nothing to indicate the ultra USA Editions will have chrome. None of the photos released thus far have any, and they are all different from the Hasbro decoes. They aren't going to be part of the Henkei line, officially anyway.

I don't get the people who say Henkei is superior, the blue goes so much better with the gold than the gray/bley/w/e TakaraTomy is gonna call it.
Besides, wasn't Onslaught blue to begin with?
Bring on the Mega Octane repaint! (please?)

Yep, that Takara blue definitely matches the original much more accurately. However, I don't mind the Hasbro colors and will have to get him to save money somehow since there are so many upcoming products. I can live with the Hasbro version which is also great if that means getting the UM City Commander set, Henkei Thundercracker, the Animated and C2.0 figures I want, and MP Thundercracker too!
Soooo.... many... products.... must try to save... money somehow.

Great review. Onslaught is definetly on my to-get list. I can't really find any major flaws in the way he looks. The gun on his arm being spring loaded is a nice little surprise. Just curious, but, is there any way, for a lack of better terms, to fold up the butt-flap-like thing on him? It looks like it might get in the way a little. You can see it in the picture of yours below, and it looks as if it can fold up.

I'm having difficulty locking in the gray tabs on the feet on the right leg when I fold the wheel up into the leg. It's like that side has an inner leg that is too thick. Anyone else with this problem?

I just got this figure today. Onslaught's legs are kinda cheaply put together. The pegs are barely able to do their job in holding the leg parts together. I'm considering using those clear plastic bands that come with the figure to keep the leg together. Other than that he's all that I expected and well worth the money I paid.
On other news, I don't know how many of you have watched Sean Long's review of Onslaught, but during his horrible LONG review he accidentally found a third sound box trigger. It sounds something between a loud engine roar and a transformation sound.
It's on Onslaught's waist on the left side. There is a little black nub.
I can't figure out if toy designers scrapped the idea or it's not working properly. During Sean Long's review he was able to recreate the sounds in Alt-mode and in Bot-mode. It could explain why Onslaught is the only ultra class figure without a transformation sound.
But yeah... A heads up to those who own the figure. Help solve the mystery!

Actually when he's in vehicle mode, rolling him forwards causes one of the wheels to hit that nub and make the sound. :)

Onslaught is absolutely AWESOME. Fun transformation, solid vehicle mode (when everything is lined up right), and a fantastic robot mode with good articulation. The SFX are REALLY lame though. Even though I knew it was an Ultra I was still surprised at how tall the robot mode was. It looks super imposing. After fiddling with it for about an hour and a half it rocketed to one of my fav Classics toys yet. Just awesome!

I think this problem could have been avoided if they stuck with the version shown in the instructions... Check out Step 4 Part 3. You're supposed to be able to push those wheels in, allowing for a bit more room.

Likes:
- Alt mode is a cool vehicle.
- Robot mode is b-a-d-a-s-s/
-Perfect translation of Onslaught.
Dislikes:
-The damned legs with the silver/gray parts not being able to be pegged in without it popping out every fricken other minute.
-Wish he had a bigger weapon in 'bot mode.
-Missing transforming sound effects.
One question:
Why are the silver/gray parts on the legs able to swivel on the black hinge that attaches it to the rest of the leg? That black hinge can swivel 360 degrees. But in alt mode it's in the same place on the leg as in alt mode. There's no need for it to swivel 360 degrees at all.

I ended up fixing it by putting just a little bit of superglue onto the grey tabs, plugging it in and then IMMEDIATELY pulling them right out before it can stick. After drying it all plugs in perfectly and holds even when fiddling with him.

I recently got Onslaught and I am having trouble getting his pegs to stay connected. I'm havng trouble with the pegs that keep his legs together, the peg that keeps his shield attached in vehicle mode, and the peg that attaches his chest to his torso (step #8 in his instructions). These pegs keep popping open/out. Is this a common problem or do I have a "lemon"? Or am I transforming him incorrectly?
I'm getting frustrated with this - it is keeping a good toy in my opinion from being a great toy.

Onslaught is a huge disappointment. I really was hoping for something great, but now that he's in-hand, there's a laundry list of things about him that just bug the crap out of me. The legs, for one, which are horribly designed will not stay intact. At all.
The back of the box is also a HUGE liar. It claims "Shield Attaches to arm!" It should REALLY say "Shield hangs out with arm for a little bit before getting drunk and wandering off with a random girl, leaving Arm alone at the bar to drink itself unconscious". Same goes double for attaching it to the alt mode, except that's more of a "Shield writes roof postcards from time to time while touring Europe." Worst connection mount ever.
Onslaught could be really good, if only it didn't have so many halfassed design implementations. It really reeks of a toy that wasn't properly tested or was rushed through design. The only thing I really like is the mechanism for the driving sound effects, which is rather clever (the previously mentioned black button on his waist).
If this is indicative of the universe line as a whole, I'll happily give it a miss and go on my merry way.

I agree with QuinJester, this toy is a PITA and it's mostly from the waist down. First of all, I LOVE how he looks in both modes. As far as looks go, he's all aces. But it's the physical toy aspect of him that is really unfortunate. Everyone is complaining how the legs barely peg together. I WISH I had that problem. Mind don't peg in AT ALL. Poke the pegs in the holes, they slide right out. This is the worst mess for a leg transformation I've seen in quite some time. I don't know if I'll even try nail polish or glue because those pegs and holes are so small that some extra goo isn't going to hold up to repeated transformations. I haven't been this let down with the lower section of a transformer since Titanium Soundwave.
The shield I have no problem with. That clicks on nice and tight in both modes. I'd gladly exchange that for solid legs though.
The only other thing that bugs me is something I haven't noticed in pics and I haven't really seen anyone else gripe about: His angled head. Not since Titanium Rodimus has a bot been so depressed. This could have been fixed with something that Hasbro loves to put on most other figures, a ball joint. Why no ball joint? Of all the toys to skip a ball joint on this is the one that needs it the most. And while I'm on the head, they missed a FANTASTIC opportunity for lightpiping. His visor is so big and such a nice light shade of orange that I can only imagine how amazing he'd look with some light shining through.
I know that sounds like a lot of bitching, but I think it's valid. This guy is such an awesome looking toy and that makes the little flaws that much more painful. I hope someone comes up with a good way to fix his legs (and plastic bands don't count, that 'fix' is never acceptable to me). Until then, I'll just quietly swear to myself while I enjoy Onslaught's company and help him look for his contact lens.

Onslaught's visor lights up, as long as you can deal with it making a "BARAPARAPARAPARAPARAPA" noise. Or its single, pitiful "whoop", that is the single most useless soundbyte ever given a transformer toy. If you could give it a consistent siren, great, but no. Just a single, sad, "woop!".
As I speak, I'm trying to get Onslaught's shield to stay in place in vehicle mode, and it is literally leaping off of his roof. Like, with force. Christ.

It's simple really. Just use a hobby knife or razor blade to cut a tiny rectangular notch in the tab like this:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/DSCF0006-8.jpg
It doesn't even have to be as deep as mine. Use the point of the hobby knife to make a similar smaller notch in the slot on the turret and the shield will snap and lock into place. If you just want it to stay on, you don't even have to do this, just shave a tiny bit from the side of the tab on the shield. The problem is simply that the tab is too wide for the slot on the turret and the slot is pushing it back out.

And here's the full review. First off, Onslaught is awesome!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0015.jpg
Vehicle mode is a S.W.A.T. armored vehicle, with claws on the front and a turret on top:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0002.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0003.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0004.jpg
One of the things I like about the shield is that it has a little hinged tab on the bask that still allows for the sound button to be pressed if the shield is stored on the roof:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0006.jpg
The shield can, of course, (as many are well aware :lol) be removed:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0005.jpg
The turret has 180 degrees of movement, and when you press the button you hear a depressingly short siren, or a sustainable volley of machine gun fire. Rolling the vehicle will activate a engine start-up noise, and will keep the engine sound effect going for as long as the vehicle rolls forward. Stopping causes an engine shut-off noise followed by silence.
Vehicle mode is pretty standard Ultra size, not a long as some, but still bulky:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0007.jpg
Transformation is fiddly and satisfying, and results in a cool looking robot:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0009.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0010.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0011.jpg
Again, height wise, he's a pretty standard Ultra class height:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a355/BenjaminDolle/Universe%20Onslaught/DSCF0012.jpg
Overall, a very nice figure, provided you get one that doesn't suffer too terribly from the flaws some people are reporting with the leg cages and shield attachment points. If you've been waiting for him, by all means, get him, he's pretty sweet. If you're on the fence, I'd wait until you can get some hands-on experience before plunking down the cash.

I've figured out what causes the problem with the left leg cage.
Both legs have a small black hinge the that grey cage pegs over. The right leg hinge is molded with an indentation, or bevel, that allows clearance for the pegs. The left leg hinge has no such indentation, causing resistance between the parts. To make matters worse, the sort of "C" on the left cage ( that goes over the hinge) is molded less squarely than on the right leg. If I had more than a crappy cell phone camera, I'd take some pics.
But essentially, you've got two pieces that were not engineered correctly. I would think that a metal file or sandpaper used on the left cage might allow the pieces to fit better.
I would also guess that this is the sort of problem that could get resolved in the next couple of shipments.

My black hinges are both the same and work fine on mine. The minor issue with getting the cage closed on my left leg is that the gimmick that makes the engine noise in alt mode keeps the wheel panel from folding in as far as it can on the right leg, and it's just enough to hold the cage a millimeter or two out from pegging in all the way.

Hmm. I see what you're talking about with the engine gimmick. But it seems as though there maybe a couple different "versions" out there. On mine the faulty hinge make the pegs not go in at all.
So does yours "pop out" like mine, or are they just not tight or secure?

Mine just doesn't lock down by itself. Once I fold the front leg panel into place it all holds together just fine.

I cut a tiny v shaped groove into the silver/gray leg panel where the folded in wheel touches it. This gives more clearance to the tire that's pushing the leg panel out.

This figure is just outstanding. He definitely looks like he could mop the floor with every single one of the other Classics/Universe figures. Best looking cat on my Classics display shelf.

Yeah, I just scraped down that whole length to be thinner rather than cut a notch, but essentially same fix.

If you plan to keep it, I'd suggest boiling some water, put the part in the water (turn off the heat!) and let sit until the plastic reforms itself to its original straightness.

I had this problem. However, it was due to my mistransformation. I had rotated the thighs 180 degrees when he was in robot mode and then tried to transform him. If you do that, the alt mode won't stay together. So try rotating the thighs 180 degrees. I'll try to post a pic of how they should be later tonight.

I don't need to take a pic. An easy way to check is to open the back "door" of the alt mode and if you see screws on the black part of his thigh you have them oriented correctly. If you do not see the screws, then you have to rotate the thighs 180 degrees.
Opened Onslaught yesterday, and it was beautiful. Only problem I had was the aforementioned shield problem, and that's only in alt mode. And I figured out how to fix it WITHOUT Peaugh's help, so NYAH. ;)
The transformation in the legs isn't fiddly with mine, but the pegs and tabs don't click into place quite as secure as I'd want them to be. Still, they don't fall out and come loose, so I don't really mind.

Got mine today, and he doesn't have any problems with the shield in either mode, not that he will pick up in the air in alt mode, but it stays on fine. and his legs don't click tight, but he has absolutely no problem standing up and the panels are fine. Great figure.

Got mine a couple days ago, and I really like him.
One problem though - his chest won't fully lock into place. Every time I try to move his arms, the chest starts to fold up. Does anyone else have this problem?
If I knew a way to fix this, he would be totally awesome. Right now he's merely nice.
EDIT: Used some clear nail polish on the inner tab (on the actual chest piece that folds down) - it stays firmly planted now.
Now he's totally AWESOME LOL

Here's a possible leg fix on Onslaught that worked for me. It turned out, the grey cage couldn't get close enough to the leg, as the blue-grey posts it plugged into were so long. With a knive, I had to shave off 1 millimeter of plastic from the posts.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a286/Djinnmage/opened.jpg
With the plastic shaved down, the grey cage's pegs could reach further into the holes in the posts. With that done, the leg closed and sealed up just fine.

I don't use nail polish but I use acrylic gloss sealer (for acrylic paints)...brush it on and wait a few minutes for it to dry a little then put the ball joint together or whatever you're using it on...

I just got Onslaught tonight, and I did a similar shield mod, with my X-acto Knife.
My first impressions out of the box:
DAMN he looks like a cool armored war machine. I could do without the needless lettering on it (lol-vague-references-monzo-lol... uh, no.) but it looks pretty solid. Except for the Cannons, which look just ridiculously puny and fall off if you look at them funny. That's totally unbecoming a vehicle this badass, so I'm already on the hunt for something appropriately Kitbashy to replace them with.
The sound effect box is misleading as well. The single siren "BLAWP!" is a little confusing. Fortunately, I'm already at work on a mod that will cause the front Spotlight to light up as long as the button is held down, so the brief siren will be much more useful in that regard.
Incidentally, the engine sound will continue (without stopping) as long as you can keep consistently rolling the tires forward....what's your record so far? Mine's about 10 seconds...
(Protip: In Bot mode, you can cheat and rhythmically press the button on his left hip to make the engine idle continuously. :lol)
I agree, the front wheel panels fall off fare too easily, but a quick turn of the screw holding the plug in, and the situation is much improved. A little Epoxy and the situation is remedied permanently. These parts don't ever NEED to come off.
I also modified my "Action Pop-Off Shield." With an x-acto knife and a little effort, I altered the plug and the socket as such:
http://www.shadowstitch.com/images/onslaught_shield.gif
I hollowed out a small canal inside of the socket, and narrowed channels on either side of the shield plug (at an angle) so it would plug securely into the now grooved socket.
It doesn't stay on QUITE strongly enough to pick it up by, but it stays on tightly enough to rotate the turret or push the sound effect button without it catapulting off Onslaught's person. Might have to use some Apoxie to make a Perfect Joint later on...
Upon transforming to Robot Mode:
The leg panels really do NOT want to stay shut. It took a lot of x-acto trimming, a touch of sandpaper, and a little bit of superglue tightening to get the sockets to stay shut securely, but now they work like a dream.
And for god's sake, fold up his toes. The boxart is WRONG.
DAMN, he's one big bot. Despite the relatively compact size of his Vehicle mode, I was NOT expecting a bot this big. Like Lockdown, he's a very large robot compacted very efficiently in Alt mode. He's bigger than most Alternators, and almost as big as Movie leader Prime! I like that there isn't a lot of "hollow space," since most everything seems to fold in to form a solid body. Words can't describe how much better (and BIGGER) he looks in person, compared to photographs; and the stupid poses that he tends to be photographed in don't help much either.
His fists are a little cartoony looking, but menacing nonetheless -- A black wash on some of his plain grey parts, a little drybrushing, and he will look like one serious F-U-Up-Bot. I like the big decepticon symbol on his shoulder. Oh, and time to modify the socket again, this time on his arm, so the shield will fit correctly...ho-hum.
He sure does take a lot of work to make him presentable and functional!
Cute spring-loaded arm gun there! And the gimmick with the head lighting up is just awesome... a shame his eyes won't stay lit up unless he's ALSO making the machine-gun noises. Something I may have to remedy while I'm working on the spotlight. Should his eyes be orange, or red? Hmmm. Anyways, screw lightpiping, THIS is the way you do it.
All in all, this is what I expect from a 25$ Ultra class figure...if only the QC wasn't so unrelentingly rancid across the Classics/Universe 2.0 line. I recognize that not everyone has the tools, skills, or inclination to modify all of their toys to look and act like you'd expect them right out of the box...and people shouldn't HAVE to.
Admirable engineering, crappy quality standards.
You can do better, Hasbro; It'll be interesting to see if Takara DOES.

He makes a machine gun sound, a useless beep, and some kinda engine noise, his head always looks down and is not on a ball joint, but his eyes light up. His legs do not stay together at all, which pretty much ruins the toy. He's ok, but not as great as everyone is making him out to be. I'd only give him a 7/10.

Onslaught is something.
Pros:
* Large and intimidating in both modes
* Electronic gimmicks are fun to "beatbox" with.
Cons:
* It's a little difficult to line all parts back up when transforming back to vehicle mode.
* Robot mode is largely dull and bulky/boxy to me. Reminds me of certain G2 toys in that regard.
Summary: A lot of people really like this guy, and I want to like it too, but something about it doesn't quite do it for me. I think it may be the large size to accommodate the electronic gimmicks package. Something tells me I might like it more if it was a Voyager or even a Deluxe.

On my figure, his left leg was pretty fudged up, but it didn't take much to remedy it...just a little carving with an X-acto knife. I chose to take an X-acto knife and sandpaper to the protruding parts on the back of the wheel panel preventing it from laying flush.
If you give him a sort of Pat Lee "Crotch Thrusting" pose, then he's looking directly ahead... I like the light gimmick, and looking at the way they implemented the light-up eyes, there's no reason it couldn't have been a ball joint. Maybe that will be a project for the future...

I took my Onslaught apart to do some modifications to him, and amazingly almost ALL of the electronics are contained within the turret. the Chest has the battery pack, and the circuit board is screwed onto the back of that. The head LED is just slightly above that, shining onto a mirrored panel inside the head, and there are a ton of wires all wound up, which go into the turret for all the lights, speaker, and switch.
I'm not sure how to document it except with a video, but I swapped around a few wires and added some stuff, so now his "eyeshield" lights up Orange, and he has a Yellow LED inside his Spotlight. Both the Spotlight and the Eyes stay on as long as the button is held down, so I actually sort of have a use for that brief siren yelp... since the siren shuts off, but the eyes and spotlight stay on... :lol

I've heard a rather surprising amount of hate on this figure and now that I have him and I really can't quite figure out why that is. I'm a little more understanding with the Powerglide haters, but this I don't get.
Perhaps for scale sake, a voyager figure might have been a little better, but I think this is just fine. He's just a little bigger, and more intimidating in his bot mode.
I think in this case, since Hasbro wasn't going to roll out a new line of updated combiner teams they decided to do the leaders in a more larger and imposing way of their own to compensate a bit.
As updates go, Onslaught hits the nail right on the head I think. Other than the leg/cage issue I can't really find much fault in him. Big, mean looking, and very well articulated. Plastic is solid and the paint all looks fine so I really don't see anything to not like.

It's mostly the leg issue that people are complaining about, for good reason. For some people, myself included, the legs don't hold together at all and just fall apart when you try to pose him. That's just unacceptable. I haven't had time to try any of the fixes yet, but I will.
It also bugs me that his head is looking toward the ground for no apparent reason.
That said, he's still a great toy and he looks really cool. I think most people agree on that, but it's just that the leg thing is like finding a bit of poo on your ice cream.

He'd be a 9/10 if it wasn't for his leg not holding together. I've removed the wheel that is in the way, but his legs still do not seem to hold together very well. A very minor flaw that totally kills this figure. Also they could have hidden his knee joints a little better.

Overall, he's a pretty menacing figure, but as Feralstorm mentioned, he kinda loses points (on mine anyways) for not being so tight in vehicle mode, since the panels don't exactly remain aligned/fit securely into the tabs (noticeably the front tabs/foot). The leg issue didn't really occur to me until I started messing around with him in different poses, but doesn't really bug me when he's in static positions. I also had problems with his shield in alt mode, but I guess I'll try out Peaugh's method.
In general, very much recommended even with the minor (sometimes annoying) flaws.

On my Classics Onslaught, I did a little tweaking, modding, and soldering, to alter the way the lights work. I made three minor changes:
- Changed the "head" light LED to Orange instead of Red, so it matches his G1/Cartoon/Comic coloration, and rewired it so it stays on as long as the button is pressed.
- Added a yellow LED Inside of the "searchlight" on the front of the turret, which also stays on as long as the button is held down.
- Painted the inside of the "Lightbar" with Clear Red Tamiya.
Functionally, the whole apparatus looks like nothing has been changed, and still retains full range of motion and whatnot. Just augmented slightly. :D
It's kinda hard to demonstrate it without a video, so here is a little youtube I whipped up:

I LOVE Onslaught. I've never had a major hang-up on gimmicks or articulation, so leaving him posed statically to keep his legs in order isn't a problem for me. I took the batteries out (as I do with almost all my electronic TFs), so in a month or so I'll probably forget what the electronics did anyway.
For me, a figure scores well simply if it stands on its own, has decent proportions, and fits together tightly in both modes. Onslaught is a solid figure minus the leg issue...and the "toes" on mine are loose so they flop down if I pick him up. But since it's mostly about looks for me, Onslaught is an easy 9.5...only because what is important to a lot of people just doesn't bug me that much.
I really like these big, armored miltary vehicles. The Cybertron Defense team, Onslaught, TF:A Ultra Magnus and (even though I don't have him yet) and even, to a lesser degree, the Bruticus Maximus combiners are some of my favorites. I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting. I can't wait to get a better look at TF:A Swindle...he might be a new favorite, too.

Got Onslaught today. I like it pretty well, but the legs are kinda a mess... And I'd have really preferred if the gun (on his arm, not the turret) were removable. The color of the fists kinda bothers me, too, but it isn't that bad. I have a few other complaints, but it's still a good figure.

Onslaught is growing on me.
His pegs on his legs have actually IMPROVED since I have transformed him a few times.
As for the shield staying on in alt mode, I did a modification using my Dremel. I took the shield and reversed hexagonal shaped section that presses the button in alt mode so that it folds the opposite way. Next, I took my Dremel and drilled a hole in the back of the turret that matches the size of the raised "notch" on that hexagonal section. So now when the shield is on in alt mode, I fold the hexagonal section back behind the turret and push the "notch" into the hole I drilled. It works pretty nicely. I can post pics if anybody is interested.

I had the problem too about the legs not holding together when in tank mode. To solve it, make sure that the black double-tab thing on the battery cover fits into the respective slot on the leg cage. Sorry I can't take a picture, but if you don't lock it in that way, it won't stay closed at all.
My only real gripe with the figure at this point is the gun barrels. Mine don't stay on through transformation, but i'm hesitant about gluing them because I'd much rather find a sturdier replacement.

It took practically every fix in this thread, plus a couple more I tried out, just to get this figure partway up to code.
First, I scored both the shield peg and its slot with an X-acto. It's not as good as Peaugh's method I guess; the shield can wiggle from side to side a bit, but I can still lift him up by the shield now (for several seconds anyway).
On to the left leg. Tried cutting a notch into the cage where it meets the tire. Didn't work. Tried cutting ANOTHER notch where I thought the cage might still be meeting the tire. Didn't work. Tried scoring both the peg on the front of the leg and its corresponding slot on the cage. Didn't work. Got angry. Tried shaving down the protruding edge of the wheel panel that meets the battery door, not even knowing if that would affect the stability of his vehicle mode or not. DIDN'T. WORK. It's definitely gotten better than it was, but there is still nothing holding this toy's leg together besides wishful thinking.
What frustrates me most of all is that THIS TOY WOULD BE SO AWESOME IF IT WEREN'T SO FUCKED.

The problem isn't really with the cage part. The real culprit is the fact that due to the protrusion on the back of the calf (which holds the gearbox for the engine sound effect,) the flap with the front tire on it cannot lay flat against it. Trimming the cage attempts to remedy the symptom by relieving some of the pressure on the cage, but it doesn't fix the problem of the flap not physically being able to lay flat due to the hump. It can't lay flat, so it continues to push outward, which is more than the tiny pegs can handle...and the legs pop open.
A guaranteed, 100% fix I suggest, if you've got any sandpaper or files and don't mind a little behind-the-scenes wholesale butchery of your figures, is to simply remove the offending struts so that the flap will lay flat against the inner back of the leg. As such:
http://www.shadowstitch.com/images/strut.jpg
Once you remove those raised struts (which serve no purpose, structural, decorative or otherwise,) it will lay flat without any difficulty whatsoever. Parts folded over without pushing outward against the cage = cage that stays shut without issue. Problem solved.
And for bonus SnG, you can give the little pegs that hold the cage into the ankle a little coating of super glue to tighten their connection into the pair of holes on the ankles...

So anyways, this guy is great. Beefy, imposing, well articulated, great alt mode. Not much more I can really say besides that he was worth every penny.

I got this bad-boy today from TRU.com. I ordered him on Sunday and he got here pretty damn quick!
Onslaught is just absolutely awesome. Another excellent classic addition.
The classics line just keeps getting better and better.

Shouldn't be too hard. the trick is using molds that give you perfectly mirrored proportions, at least for legs. I've been working on planning for this along with others for months now.
Yeah, after seeing your Menasor, I can't freaking wait to see what you do with Onslaught and Silverbolt.

Lmfao. Fantastic review!
Another win for the Universe line!
Awesome alt mode, bulky but well-proportioned bot mode, and an incredibly imposing, "you-are-about-to-get-your-tail-handed-to-you" look in the stance of the shoulders and arms.
Gotta deduct points for the weird siren and the floppy shield, but they do nothing to take away from the figure as a whole. A bit more elbow arm articulation would have been nice as well, but overall I'm very happy with him.

My right "cowcatcher" (if you were sitting in the driver's seat; the left one if you're about to be run over by him) is loose, and won't stay up in vehicle mode. Any suggestions? I can't tell if it's pinned in, or if it could just pop out... :(
Also, I don't remember reading it in the review, but is he supposed to make the "Ch-Ch-Ch" sound when transforming him? I know you said Powerglide did, but I can't recall if Onsie does, too...

Onslaught doesn't make transforming noises, no. Just the vroom vroom driving noises, machine gun rattle, and a mournful siren blip of sadness.

Oh, and my leg cages don't have a problem staying in. Just that friggin' cowcatcher flopping around. :banghead:

Mine was loose too. Three screws will take apart his shoulder, and you can put a few layers of anything (tape, small piece of rubber) just to make the joint tighter. Mine didn't have a pin. My shield good in bot mode, but too tight in alt mode. I think a little shaving down with an xacto knife will do the trick.

No leg cage problems, except that one of the wheels that folds up into his leg continues to fall off. Other than that, spectacular toy.

i got mine today and his legs are fine as well... maybe its the wave 2 batches? (I got mine at the same store that silverbolt was first sighted at!) Really a great figure, can't wait to find powerglide and silverbolt!
The fact that the more recent posters to this thread seem to be having fewer issues with the leg cage would support Hasbro doing some kind of rolling fix. I just picked him up today. No leg cage problem on mine and the shield stays in fine too.

That said...anyone else have the problem where if you fold his fists into his arm with the hole pointing up (like in the picture), it is all but impossible to pry them back out again? I had to push them out from behind using a screwdriver....

Yes, but there's luckily a cure. Rotate the wrist so that the thumb faces the hole, then rotate it in. If you do that, you shouldn't have a problem.

I guess I might as well add this here...
Preface: I have been working on some dyeing projects lately, following Redline's tutorial over in Radicons (http://www.tfw2005.com/radicons-customs/tutorials-and-how-tos-2/how-to-dye-a-figure-164128/), and my successes have led me to start wantonly changing the color of random things with reckless glee.
Something I noticed on the packaging for Onslaught: his hands and turrets are black in the photos, but on the toy they're grey. This doesn't do a whole lot to help them stand out; especially the fists, which look like stumpy cartoon gloves.
I liked the look of it so much I decided to give em a run through my dye bath -- it's amazing how quickly and easily this softer PVC plastic just sucks up the dye! And it's way better than paint, since it's impossible to remove, and the dye penetrated deep enough that it might as well have been molded in black.
So here's a few more snaps of my already heavily modded Onslaught...now with package-authentic deco!

Can you give some tips on HOW to apply the nailpolish?
I simply CANNOT get it to work... any time I try to use nailpolish on anything, it all rubs off very quickly. Balljoints every time, but tabs are sometimes problematic. Er. I guess PM me if you feel like it's offtopic? :)
I'm having the same problem with my Onslaught (the chest not locking in), and I've never had to apply nail polish to any of my figures. Can anyone post the correct way to do this please?

Picked this guy up at Target today. I wasn't sure I would, as I'm not a big fan of the Ultra size class or the annoying sound chips that they tend to be equipped with. But he looked so good (and I can't find Blitzwing or Galvatron yet), so I decided to go ahead and grab him. Definitely can't say that I regret it, as Onslaught is one damn fine Transformer.
Onslaught's vehicle mode is a six-wheeled SWAT armored car - in many ways he looks like Bulkhead's really mean brother. A lot of the attitude comes from the wicked looking mine sweeper teeth at his front, which look ready to tear through Autobots. He's done mostly in a sort of dark metallic turquoise with some greenish gold accents. There's a turret on top which contain most of his annoying sounds - a fairly pathetic siren and a repeating machine gun sound. His shield can be attached to the top of this turret, and the result not only blocks some nice sculpted details, but also looks absolutely ridiculous. One of my favorite details is the opening hatch on top of the vehicle mode. Great touch. The vehicle mode's only downside (unless you have the shield on top) is that his third sound effect is activated by one of the wheels hitting a hidden trigger. The resulting sound is not only vague and annoying, but the trigger keeps the tire from rolling as freely as the other five.
Onslaught's transformation is pretty simple, but I'd recommend not doing it around someone who's easily irritated, as his legs have some of the loudest ratchet joints I've heard in awhile. Robot mode is nice and imposing. He has good proportions, excellent articulation, and a fantastic head sculpt. The twin cannons on his back hearken back to his G1 incarnation nicely, while the teeth from his vehicle mode make for some very cool shoulder pads. His shield clips onto his left arm, and it looks immeasurably better than it does on top of his vehicle mode. He has a small cannon on his right forearm that pops out at the press of a button. It works, but it looks ridiculously small in comparison to the rest of him. I wish they could have found a way to include a more impressive rifle, as this dinky thing he has on his arm is pathetic.
In all, he's a great figure and a more than worthy addition to your Classics connection.

Yeah, he should have come with a massive gun (like G1 Blaster size) to stick in his hand instead of the flip-out lazer. One of the things I like about Silverbolt is that he comes with a big gun to hold.
