What one do you like better, Jazz or Soundwave? I'm thinking of getting one off eBay, and it's hard to decide between the two.

Looks like one of the best Jazzs yet, in my opinion.
Almost forgot about alternators Jazz before I said that.

Although it still looks like the best to me as I'm not too interested in the alternators

Its a great figure and so much better than the movie Jazz.
Can't wait to get my hands on one to be honest.
Animated is proving to be the home for top notch G1 homages and that is no bad thing.

not my fave animated robot mode but i do like the alt mode and the bright colours. amazing how hes not much bigger than G1 jazz in alt mode but towers over him in robot mode. i do wish his wheels weren't high on his legs, i always liked the way the wheels in the g1 toy gave a lot of 'weight' to the lower legs. Overall though, like most animated toys hes oozing character and is as distinct as any of them.

My thoughts on this guy-

Jazz is yet another character with origins dating back to the very, very beginning in 1984. He appeared on Cybertron shortly before the launch of the Ark, fought bravely against the Decepticons on Earth, was nearly eaten by Unicron before being rescued and then.... kinda just disappeared. A side effect of his voice actors' (the legendary Scatman Crothers) tragic death. With no voice, Jazz fell deep into obscurity, sending the protected trademark concerning his name into oblivion.

He remained virtually forgotten for many years until the Alternator line revisited his character. Without access to his proper given name, Hasbro chose to use his Japanese counterpart name, Meister as the name of their Mazda RX-8 Transformer. This was the first step of Jazz's rebirth. Several years later, the re-christened Autobot Jazz joined Michael Bay's live action movie lineup.... and got shafted, because a three-legged chihuahua was given better character treatment & development than him.

Now, Animated has given the proud Autobot hipster one more chance to shine!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/Paladin4221/JazzVehicleNoFlash.jpg

Jazz's vehicle mode is a high-performance luxury car, like nearly all of his other incarnations. It's obviously a very expensive yet still futuristic model of transportation.

It should be noted that Jazz is the first to bear the Autobot Elite Guard symbol; which features elongated "wing" decals atop the usual Autobot symbol (not entirely unlike the Vanguard mark from Galaxy Force).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/Paladin4221/JazzRobotNoFlash.jpg

In Robot Mode, we see that Jazz has spent all those years off-camera in Cyber Ninja Training. He's a lot like Prowl; expertly proportioned and very slick. The traditional car-chest makes him a tiny bit top heavy.

Jazz's main weapons are a pair of nunchucks which are normally mounted on his arms. His hands are actually too small to grab them outright- you need to slip the rope part in first and then adjust the grip accordingly.

I can't help it. I put a bid on Jazz. He is just SO damn awesome and I hope I get him. He looks wicked. A slight re-mold and a few tweaks and he could pass for a Decepticon. I'm REALLY liking the whole Animated line and the plethora of G1 references in toys, and in the show.

Jazz literally slipped out of my hands today... really.

I was driving around today doing errands and in the process I stopped at SEVERAL Targets and Wal-Marts TRYING to find Jazz, Soundwave, and Snarl. Well, I found Soundwave and Jazz and I was stoked. I opened them both in the car and even played with Jazz between at stop lights.

His car mode is a mix of a Porsche, Audi and high-end Saab style sports cars with other elements from various high end Euro-cars. He is very nice, and low slung. His car mode is short, though, and is even smaller then Bumblebee's.

Well, the robot mode I really liked and his visual look an appeal is definitely Jazz. But mine had two right hands. So, I returned him (SECOND Animated return after Starscream, YUCK!) to a different store then where I bought him. I went to FOUR other stores after that and could not find another Jazz. I felt robbed in a way as he is a spectacular Animated figure and easily one of the best deluxe figures. He (despite the two right hands on mine) could easily be the BEST deluxe figure once I get one that has the right hands on the right arms.

Okay, so thanks to BBTS I can have another go at this in more detail.

Despite the sad passing of Jazz' original voice actor Scatman Crothers, Jazz hasn't lost too much character. He is still a white race car, with blue and red race stripes. He's lost ALL of his Martini racing decals and all of his race numerals and demarcations. He has a, somewhat fitting, Autobot Elite Guard decal. The lines of the symbol actually go with the race stripes. I do wish, however, that the racing stripes went the full length of the vehicle.

His non-realistic car mode has elements from various past versions of himself, with the exception of his Alternator (RX-8) form. There is the signature large headlights like from a Porsche 911, and a similar hood shape He differs from the 911 design with his semi-frenched rear tail lights and bulging rear fenders. His car, in essence, is a cartoon version and amalgamation of the Porsche and other high-end European Sports cars. It is a very nice, and sleek, car mode.

His transformation is one of the simplest to do, and to describe, of all of the Animated figures. All you do is push down on his rear tail lights to pop up his legs. From there you simply extend them down and fold down his feet from the inside. After folding down his feet, on the underside there is a small flap to help with his robot mode chest. Flip that down. Now, fold out the arms and push them in so the wheels are at an angle. Now, fold down the chest. Position the arms and spin the doors around so the "exhaust" aims forward. Remove his exhuast (his energy chucks) and set them aside. Now, rotate the pieces they came out of back up and you're done.

Now you have one stylin' robot. One of the first things I noticed about Jazz was his signature visor, and of all things, what resembled DJ headphones/cans over his ears. He looks like he is missing his turntables or he'd be ready for a sound and light show! Now, take those nunchuks and place them in his hands like mentioned. Try sliding them in from the bottom. With him holding his nunchuks you can see what he is spinning now, and with STYLE.

Despite my initial concerns and problems, Jazz is one of my FAVORITE deluxe figures. He has great articulation in his ankles, lateral bending knees (with a swivel joint just about them), a twisting waist and plenty or joints in his arms. Like his ninja-brother, Prowl, he can hold plenty of poses and the two together look great.

My grade.
A or a 9.0
(Point taken away because of my first one and it's QC)

jazzis one animated toy that i was hoping to look a bit different, more chunky. As it stands i wish the designer had allowed the rear wheels to be swung down so they sat at the ankle or behind the foot somewhere, they look rather in the way sat around the knees. anyway minor gripe but hes still neat, but wish hed been less of a 'prowl' ninja and more of a little boxer!!

Car mode is tiny but bot mode makes up for the size and is true to a deluxe. The panels in the car mode don't line up as good as they should. In bot mode, his chest doesn't really clip down and can be a minor nuisance. But overall, aside from the chest, all his joints are nice and tight and posing is great. Awesome figure.

Grabbed Jazz today along with Snarl, and if you read my post in the Feedback thread, it won't be hard to imagine that imo Jazz is 10 times the toy Snarl is. And that's not just because I hate Snarl. Jazz is, in a word, perfect. The only flaw I see is his big chest, but what can ya do? His weapon gimmick is cool, as is his super easy tranformation. Just because his transformation is easy, doesn't mean it's not cool, either. All the right parts move, and I've always been a fan of the "flip back half of vehicle to form legs" trick. It never gets old with me. I can't recommend Jazz enough. I can't wait for his fellow Elite Guardsmen, either.

Just picked this guy up yesterday; I've not been too keen on most of the Animated toys, but was feeling pretty hopeful about Jazz.

From a design standpoint, the elongated head, lack of mold details on his body, and overly-simplistic transformation are my least favorite characteristics. Mine also suffers from sloppy paint apps (lots of "bleedover"). The panels don't line up very well going back to car mode.

The 'chucks are a terrific idea and work well, but overall I'd say he's pretty average. Had he been a basic, I might have found him pretty cool, but for me, he's too simple for a deluxe.

Jazz is by far my favorite of the five Animated figures I have so far.

WhiteMocha
07-18-2008, 07:57 PM
Yup, Jazz is my favorite Animated figure. He looks fantastic in both modes, is fun to transform, and has as much style as that character should. He's almost 100% kibble-free, feels totally solid, and comes with a fun and unique weapon.

He also provides a beautiful complement to Prowl.

Perhaps oddly, my favorite thing about him is his feet. I love how they're designed to look like stylish two-tone loafers. It looks like he's about to bust out a soft-shoe. Between the shoes and the white cap, he's literally cool from head to toe.

I really can't say enough good things about this figure. If someone told me I had to get rid of my entire set of Animated figures and could only keep one (scary thought!) it would be Jazz.

Razerwire
07-18-2008, 08:21 PM
Because that doesn't look good?Well then it could've been mentioned. But no one did which is why it was strange that all the pics showed the arms not completely transformed.

07-23-2008, 10:04 PM
Jazz is a rather nice deluxe. He IS a bit simple to transform, but give how nice both the bot and car modes, turned out, it's hard to fault him for it. The only design improvements I can think of would be a head that can look up and heels to improve balance.

On a side note, how's the overall QC on this guy looking? Mine turned out pretty well, although there were a few dark splotches of paint on his legs and shoulders that needed sanding off. The apps on his "earmuffs" were a touch spotty too. Nothing too bad though.

nice toy, i do wish his chest clicked in though like prowls does. also if the leg wheels had somehow been brought down and away from teh knees he would have had a more streamlined look. great alt mode, TF is a bit simplistic but thats not always a bad thing!

Grimlock_13
07-27-2008, 12:07 PM
Not a bad deluxe toy. I've actually liked it less since first fiddling with it. Overall it's pretty solid but I wish the neck as molded so you could turn the head side to side and have it face forward instead of having the 'head cocked' pose. The lower legs (made from the rear half of the car) look super long and weird. BUT it's a neat homage to the original with a hip little alt mode and the nunchucks are a cool little touch.

I wish the nunchucks had a better storage method than just slotting them in place by that small amount. I have this nasty feeling they'll drop out at some point without me noticing and get lost.

Also, pity the Autobot logo is a bit smooshed up. It's not very clear, made worse because of the Elite Guard 'wings' either side of it.

Feralstorm
07-27-2008, 10:28 PM
Jazz is best described as an average Animated toy. Nothing strongly bad about it, but nothing that stands out as unusually good either. The toy does pull of that "guy wearing a spandex body-suit with car sections as football armor" look from the cartoon pretty well though.

I'm finding Jazz underwhelming, and I can't figure out why. He's the spitting image of his cartoon model, both 'bot and alt mode look awesome...

The only negative is the brain dead Gobots/Machine Robo transformation. And even with that the simple overall transformation is supplemented with very nice details like the flap to cover the hole in front of the head and the rotating arm guards (and rotating arm pipes).

But still, I'm left feeling empty. Take it as you will.

Seems a lot of people are underwhelmed by Jazz. I think it might partially be due to the fact that there is just so much awesomeness in the entire Animated line that it's almost like sensory overload. Like, if Animated Jazz were in a different line that didn't have so many consistently great figures, like Energon or Armada or Cybertron, I think people would be praising the hell out of him.

Personally I absolutely love him. His alt mode is one of the best looking TF cars ever made, his bot mode is tall and nicely proportioned with superb articulation, his weapon gimmick is clever and works well, and even though his transformation is very simple it's still fun. There's something very satisfying about the way his chest clicks into place. I also think it's awesome how such a tiny car can unfold into such a tall bot.

Plus he looks KILLER with a sword. :)

he pipes are supposed to point upwards:
If you turn that entire section all the way around...he looks like freaking Wolverine man! I am on a ninja gaiden II tip too...so claws+ninja robot=excellent.

Great figure, the only underwhelming thing to me is that the toy is molded in white. Articulation is excellent, up there with Cybertonian deluxe Prime. Has similarity with Lockdown in that the alt mode is small, but the robot mode is tall, and larger than one would expect from the alt mode.

Got mine today. Paint is fine and joints are tight.

This is a great design (assuming you can appreciate the animated look), and one of the best deluxe-price car robots they've done. Not quite as kibble-free as Lockdown, but with better articulation.

My only complaint is that I can't get the chest to lock down.

FINALLY got mine about an hour ago. After playing around with him I hafta say that I still love him the same as when I saw pics/reviews online. His car mode is so slick looking and really looks cool. His transformation is really simple and kinda boring compared to some of the other bots we've had that involve alot of twisting and turning but he still looks great. I don't like the nunchucks in his hands, I think they look perfect in their holders and give his shoulders a cooler look. I'd recommend him

Bleh. I'm always careful about examining the visible paint apps before buying, to the point of OCD I think, but the hidden ones are always a roll of the dice and my Jazz has a funny little stripe across his chin with no paint on it. Oh well, I may try touching it up sometime.

Picked him and Oil Slick up yesterday.

I like the look of Jazz in both of his modes, he has some good posability, though some of the joints are a bit tight and hard to move. However, I do feel he suffers a bit from Concept Camaro BB, he's kinda overrated (though not near to the same extent). I don't care for the fact that you can see most all of Jazz underneath his car, and as I said some of the joints are a little tough to move. Plus on mine the chest doesn't really lock at all, the left wheel doesn't go in as far as the right. And one of the ropes for his nunchuk is kinda screwed up. However, he is still one of the better deluxes in the line and he looks really nice. Minus a couple faults, he's a solid figure, and a must have.

Heh, when I was a kid I actually LIKED seeing a robot peeping out from under a car when I turned it over. Reminded me I was playing with a Transformer (or GoBot) and not just another crummy old car toy. :)

As for today, I really don't care. Sure it's neat when they can completely disguise the bottom, but it's not something I go ga-ga for. I'll take articulation, sculpt, alt mode and bot mode over a concealed undercarriage any day.

Perhaps oddly, my favorite thing about him is his feet. I love how they're designed to look like stylish two-tone loafers. It looks like he's about to bust out a soft-shoe. Between the shoes and the white cap, he's literally cool from head to toe.

Maybe RepoLables needs to make a kit with Martini badges and Converse stars for the feet?

Only problem with mine it a sticky left shoulder. Well that and the pulling the rear away from the windshield takes some effort.

Also has anyone noticed the tail lights cant in the same direction on both sides? Kinda bothered me a bit as a car-guy. I was trying to imagine what a real life car based on this design would loook like. Then I noticed that and it kinda made the tail lights a little less cool.

NGW
08-07-2008, 09:29 PM
Alright, so over time he has grown on me. Still think he is a bit overrated, but the overall look of the figure makes up for his shortcomings. I dig the armored man in spandex look he has about him, he just..looks cool. His transformation is simple, but again very effective. Still wish his chest would lock down..

i have to admit jazz is nothing like i was hoping, im not a massive fan of the rather gangly ninja look, i was hoping for more a short bruiser, also wish the Tf was more G1 inspired, i feel that works really nicely and could have prevented the oddly placed wheels at knees. BUT i still got him as i just love the car mode and despite the simple TF i do actually like it for what it is, I do wish a simple tab had been included to hold the chest down though, funny how a line with such great engineering can be missing something so obviously needed.

I guess the chest not pegging doesn't bother me since the ratchet that holds it into place does the job just fine. I can hold him upside-down and even give him a good shake and the chest wont budge, so I don't see a need for a locking peg.

No reason to not have one though, if it doesn't hinder transformation or articulation, there is no reason to not have the extra stability.

My main problem comes with the fact that when I move his left arm (which the wheel doesn't seem to like to go in as far as the right) it will occasionally move the chest up, which is an annoying flaw.

to not have the chest move while posing, just have one hand hold it down while the other moves the arm up and down.

Nice. I saw Jazz the other day, I was tempting to get him... but instead I got Animated Soundwave. When I opened Soundwave, I noticed that his vistor's paint was chipped before I even opened the toy. Did I really made good choice or not?

I wasn't saying there shouldn't be a peg (I'm usually one asking for more pegs if anything) just that mine doesn't seem to need one. I can move his arms and even pick him up by the chest and it stays put. But, like Onslaught taught everyone, the same toy can have different problems for different folks.

I got Jazz, and I love him, but like CC BB he is over-rated, but unlike CC BB, he earns almost all of it save a smidgen that constitutes the over-rated-ness, which I will elaborate on in a moment.

He is gorgeous. Pure Jazz goodness. The vehicle mode is probabl the nicest cartoon car I've ever seen in plastic form. It's obviously Jazzy, but still fresh and original. Transformation is decent and the robot mode is sleek and awesome.

Now, the negatives- sorry, negative. He has the same bloody "my legs fold up like I'm nkeeing backwards to make my car/jet/tank/wtfever mode" transformation in the legs. It works, but I still have never liked bar a few rare and minor exceptions. This does, however, make him look more smooth and gives him a wider range of movement.

Nun-chuh-KAH's rock, no matter what, so it goes without saying that they are cool.

While not as diverse as Soundwave, this is another Animated figure that can be shared between the two parties. (bearing in mind people are open to try new things once in a while) He conveys the cartoony-robot-in-protective-spandex-with-armour-plating look from the show while keeping the robodude-in-metal-box-suit-with-car-parts look of the G1 show dudes, so everyone is happy.

One last thing: he has standard fist holes, so if anyone wants to give him another TF's sword or gun or whatever, he can use them. SWEET!

I love love Jazz Animated. My favorite of wave 3 deluxes for sure. One of the best ones in the line I think.

Certainly is one of the line's best, though I think of wave 3 Soundwave is my number one, then prett much a tie between Jazz and Oil Slick.

The rear lights look a lot like missile tips to me, which is why I was pretty disappointed to find out that you can't rotate the rear wheel sections in robot mode to look like leg-mounted missile launchers.

Other than that, I am pretty happy with the toy. Looks great in both modes and the posing is excellent.

I do not like the hips, and the chest not locking in bothers me too. Good figure though.

Out of curiosity, did anyone else get a Jazz who's chest stays in place or is it just mine?

Sure, it doesn't peg into anything or 'lock' into place, but there's an audible 'click' when it's folded down and I can move the arms, flail him around, hold him upside down and even lift him by the chest and it stays in place. I feel lucky that it's not as loose as what I'm reading here because that would bug the shit out of me and probably make me hate the toy.

Mine had a stress mark next to the left elbow's pin. I'm taking it back to Target, and I hope the next one I get is perfect. I'll be so disappointed if mine turns out to have 2 right hands...

Also: How do you get his arms back into car mode? I can't get the panels lined up, no matter what.

They do need a bit of massaging, to be sure. Even now I still end up with some small gaps. The best you can hope for is to have the arms the right way when stored, the hands folded into their little niche, and the little tabs slotted securely.

yeah just keep fiddling with the arms...without too much force, just push them back into how u feel they should go in...they usually twist around themselves, quite smoothly...its a good figure

There's a lot of tabs on the legs, as well. Make sure they're all lined up. You can get it completely flush. It takes some effort but it becomes easy the second, third time.

I have only one problem with my Jazz: the front left-hand wheel's pin was not pushed in all the way, so that now, when I pick him up, the wheel droops at an angle. It's fine when he's on the ground, though.

I really don't even see how the lower panels (the ones that hold the nunchucks) are SUPPOSED to line up in car mode. I can get them tabbed into the front fenders just fine but there's two more tabs that are supposed to connect to the door panels, and I can't get them both in at once! Since the lower panels collide with the rear fenders, there should be some sort of slot or tab in the rear fenders to hold the lower panels in place, but there's nothing.

Robot Mode: In some ways Jazz is just another Car-Transformer. We've seen the hood-as-chest thing a thousand times by now. But while the basic design isn't particularly innovative, the execution is pretty well done. Despite his rather broad chest Jazz looks very lean and the combination of white, black, and grey makes it seem as if he's wearing some kind of runner's track suit. In fact Jazz as a whole looks very much like an Olympic athlete, ready to run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds.

As befits someone described as a cyber-ninja, Jazz is a very posable, very dynamic robot. His weapons consist of two nunchaku or nunchucks, however you want to call them. Two sticks connected by a length of chain (or string, in this case). The nunchaku are made from the additional exhaust pipes that usually sit on Jazz' forearms (the doors of this car mode). Jazz can do some pretty mean poses with them and though I'd never have thought 'Jazz' and 'nunchaku' would go together, he looks pretty neat with them.

So the bottom line for the robot mode is simple: An old-fashioned, but somehow refreshingly executed robot design with some nice elements and no obvious flaws. Pretty good.

Alternate Mode: Jazz transforms into a low-riding sports car, tuned-up with extra exhaust pipes on the sides, strange, almost missile-shaped side mirrors and raised rear fenders for the brake lights. When I see this car mode I'm rather strongly reminded of Speed Racer and the kinds of race cars featured in that cartoon series.

The car is well done, but I can't really think of anything else to write about here. No gimmicks, the weapons can only be used as exhaust pipes, and rolling Jazz across the floor is pretty much it as far as play value goes in this mode. So bottom line: A good vehicle mode. That's it.

Remarks: Jazz was one of my favourite characters in G1 and though his appearances in Animated have been few so far, he still came across as cool as ever. He's fascinated with Earth culture and his exchange with Bulkhead was an instant classic to me:

Jazz: Man, that was some freakin' funky coloured light show. What do you call those things again?
Bulkhead: Traffic lights.
Jazz: Traffic lights. Solid!

As a figure Jazz is nothing spectacular, but a good, solid execution of an old-fashioned design with a nice style and superb posability. Not the best Animated figure yet, but a good, no-nonsense Autobot. Recommended to all Jazz fans and fans of car-style Transformers.

There's an easy fix for this. I've noticed that most people transform him so that in alt-mode the doors are "tucked behind" the rear fender like so:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3063/2784518258_c21eaa34d2.jpg?v=0

If your doors don't align easily this creates gaps...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3177/2783640241_a7cb5db532.jpg?v=0

Instead, what you want to do is position the rear edge of the door on the outside of the fender...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3092/2784506110_3b5fe365e6.jpg?v=0

That automatically locks the door into place and gets rid of the gap.
