Basically, it is a similar premise to Night of the Living Dead -similar, but not exactly the same.
As a matter of fact, George Romero tried to make I Am Legend first, but couldn't get the author's permission so instead made Night of the Living Dead.
The author did try to make the movie twice.
Once was The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price and the other is The Omega Man with Charlton Heston. Even though both movies stray pretty far from the source, they are actually pretty good movies.
I, too am stoked for this movie and I am glad to hear others are as well.
Most of what I have been reading has been hate for it.
Is it just cool to hate on everything these days?

"A man-made virus wipes out the population of New York City, leaving Robert Neville (Will Smith) the last human survivor in the city and possibly the world. Neville lives alone for three years, attempting to contact and find other possible survivors. He is watched by the Infected, mutant victims of the plague. Neville works to find a way to create a cure using his own immune blood, but he finds himself outnumbered by the Infected and running out of time."
Based on the story by Richard Matheson. It's been adapted at least twice before, though both with major liberties. This is supposed to remain more faithful to the book.
The other two were "Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price and "The Omega Man" with Charleton Heston. I liked both of them. LMOE is more of an old-fashioned horror type flick, whild TOM was a prime example of the 60s/70s Heston post-apocalypic flick.

Actually, sincerity is the new irony. It's cool to be really into things you like.

I read the book a couple years ago, but never saw any of the films. I am realyl wanting to see how this movie turns out.

I think its peculiar that ordinarily when source material is distorted beyond it's initial form it normally ends up being garbage.
However, I Am Legend has had two movies based on it that are vastly different than the original novel yet are cool in their own way.
The Omega Man is very much a film of the 70s yet it is still worth a watch if you ever get the chance.
Not only that, but it also helped form the zombie horde movie genre as well.
The Will Smith movie does look like it takes liberties with the initial story as well, but it does still look like it is I Am Legend.

I've only read the graphic novel. It started out awesome, but started sucking at the end..I hope the movie takes a different direction.
So far, my prediction for 2nd best movie of the year is 30 Days of Night.

I'm looking forward to this, hell, I've been enthusiastic about it ever since Arnie was supposed to be in it, and that was YEARS ago.
This looks pretty sweet. First I've heard of it.

The original story is outstanding. Hell, most of Matheson's stuff is.
And while the trailer suggests some liberties are being taken, I can live with liberties for the purpose of modernizing the film.

I like Will Smith. He's a cool actor. I'll definitely catch this in theaters when it comes out.
I liked The Omega Man. Maybe this one will improve on it.

Ironically, I don't see any similarity to the Zombie Movies Mentioned by Smasher aside from "OMG, the city's empty! Oh wait, no its not, its full of man-eating dead people! Ahhhhh!" Scenario, only this baby's got Vampire-like peoples.
The Summary of the story, or what I've read on Wikipedia.org is so depressing, pretty much like Omega Man was (if you didn't focus on the music) I don't think I'll watch it in the theaters (it looks scary as hell, from what they didn't show you), but I'll certainly watch it when its on TV/DVD! I hope its good.

Shit. This and AVP:R look to be awesome movies coming out later this year. This looks to be an awesome movie and the premise of the book sounds like an awesome read.

Good Lord! What other similarities do you need? Does it need to be directed by Gorge A. Romero as well?
Meh. Charlton Heston > Will Smith. I think I'll stick with Omega Man.
I agree. Charlton Heston RAWKS!
But I don't see why that means you can't watch this one.
