NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider," hiring Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) to produce a Transformers-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series about a man and his indestructible supercar.

Variety says the network is developing a two-hour pilot for the project, with tentative plans to air it as a telepic later this season. Liman is open to the idea of directing, assuming his feature schedule allows. If the telepic clicks, a new-model "Knight Rider" could be on the air as early as next fall.

Dave Andron ("Raines") is writing the pilot script and will serve as supervising producer alongside executive producers Liman and Dave Bartis ("The O.C.," "Heist") for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Productions.

The trade says the success of Transformers had a role in inspiring NBC Entertainment chief Ben Silverman's decision to revive "Knight." The thinking is that small screen f/x have advanced to the point where it'd be feasible to have a weekly series in which cars shift shapes.

It's also likely the new show will explore the idea of "evil" cars to offset the heroic talking K.I.T.T. car of the original series, which starred David Hasselhoff. That said, the series is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car.

Go Transformers and thanks! They tried this once back in the early 90's that never happened and then came "Team Knight Rider". I did watch it but missed the old series. They had the "Viper" show that could have been the next Knight Rider but the car never talked. I love Dodge Vipers so I did enjoy the show. Here's to hoping for a thumbs-up return!

Knight Rider is a great sci-fi action premise and can be really cool if reimagined well, like TF. I have my doubts, but I'll give it a chance. I see loads of bad CG and more trying-too-hard-to-be-dark acting.

Hopefully William Daniels will provide the voice, but I severely doubt it.

I wonder how they will pull off a modern KITT, most of his gadgets which were fantasy magic in 1982 are now commonplace, like satellite uplinks, in-dash GPS, vocal synthesizers, wireless phone, voice commands, computer interfaces, etc.

It was only a matter of time, after the remakes of Galactica and Bionic Woman. I was a huge fan of the original, fingers crossed on this one!!

Sounds similar to the show "Viper". where the badguy gets memory loss and drives a shape shifting Dodge Viper. But the shape shifting was limited to diffrent colors and gadgets poping out. Was a good show. but got cheesy fast!

Actually in the pilot Kitt jumped over a semi truck with out a ramp using turbo boost.

My favorite episodes of Knight Rider were KARR and Goliath. I also vaguely remember an old 57-like Chevy that had missile launchers on the hood that destroyed KITT (feel free to correct me if I am wrong). I loved to see some bad guys that were other vehicles! Hopefully this new series will have plenty of 'bad' vehicles in it!

I'm curious about the shape shifting. I think having them turn into robots would just Schlock it up. It's be Gobots for the 21st century. I'm hoping it's more along the lines of different vehicular modes for different terrain. Sort of like Viper Defender's off road road mode, or TKR's Dante's amphibious mode.

The KR2000 car was a kit car based loosely on the Pontiac Banshee. I don't know whatchassis they used for it, but it was front wheel drive.

I've actually been wondering what would be a good car to use for a modern KITT. I really don't like that Koenigsegg KITT. GM Really doesn't have a car that would work well for KITT, anymore. Unless, you want to shrink him down to Solstice scale. A Corvette might work, but they'd have to do something about the headlights the C6s are cursed with. I don't think the new Camaros really have the right look, but I'm kind of biased against those, anyway. None of the retro styled musclecars are really sleek enough.

All I can think of is a Dodge Viper, but I'm not sure those have a good look for KITT, either. The only European car I can think of that would be good, is the Lotus Exige. That one's awefully small, though.

Well, I think I resisted watching that Viper show just because it was so sponsored. Dodge vehicles and all that, I don't want to watch a commercial for an hour. And it SO ate off K.R.'s legacy. I watched a couple, then I said no way. It wasn't the gimmicks, those were kinda cool in a way, but more-or-less like Im sayin it was a dodge bonanza. And at that time, dodge really didn't have anything going for them, it was the AVenger, or the new ram debut that was cool. But they really didn't have a sports car besides the Viper. Maybe I was just too old for it, and it got dull.

I agree with Greyryder. I'm having a tough time thinking of something modern which would work as a viable KITT. It needs to look like him, and of course be something that a manufacturer can sell, so no custom fullbody mods.

I think the Vette C6 is about as close as we'll get from GM right now, although it would need severe front end mods:

I would have preferred something more in line with the darkness and mystery of the opening credit narration - and maybe a dash of the supernatural, a sort of 'justice from beyond' element where you really don't know whether KITT is computerized or possessed.

Right now its unknown if it will be the Firebird or GTO based on the Camaro chasis. With the rummor of Pontiac going all RWD by 2011. Its posible we could see a prototype early next year that would work well for K.I.T.T.

Gotta see it to see if they can work this out or not, cuz my vote is that they make it suck. In my own car I've got bluetooth that talks to my phone which I use to talk to everybody else, a gps system that tells me where I am and where I'm going, headlights that go up and down measuring to find the right spot, a gazillion mp3 songs, books, and movies to listen/watch. New Mercedes vehicles have their new laser cruise control that can completely stop the car by itself & then get back going all from 'watching' the car in front of it. Not to mention the Lexus that parallel parks itself.
Soooo, what are they going to do to make this new version stand out that is cool but not stupid? That's why I gotta see it to like it.

A big part of the show IMHO was that KITT was (basically) a simple common Trans Am. It didn't stand out, people didn't suspect it. But the new KITT is such a rare, "outrageous" car---it goes completely against the whole "normal-looking car that's actually incredibly advanced" thing the original had going on.

One. KITT had a completely different front clip than any firebird or Trans Am ever built. The production cars didn't get front end that even resembled KITT's untill 1991. If I'm not mistaken, the show also debuted before most people had ever layed eyes on a third generation F-body.

Two. There's been no anouncement anywhere that I've seen about what kind of car KITT will or won't be. That photoshoped Koenigsegg that somebody posted has been floating around for quite some time.

Yea so far its just a concept, but I just cant see them pairing the Camaro and GTO. Old-school corporations like GM are all about tradition, not mixing it up.

Applying the CB-era style to a new Trans Am just doesn't work at all IMO. The 3rd and 4th gen Firebird showed a progressive evolution toward the postmodern, which I'm sure will be lost in the retro-muscle craze should it return.

Probably so. I like the show but I am far from an historian on it.
Am I correct in remembering that in the first season there were ramps to facilitate the jumping (at least some times)?
I also remember that initially they would use the turbo boost to just go fast sometimes, but as the show progressed it became more of a magic jump button.

The one thing I remember from the show is that they actually filmed the car landing where it looked like it survived the jump, or they just didn't show it land at all.

My young mind was able to appreciate that after a few seasons of watching the General Lee basically getting destroyed as it landed every show only to see the Duke boys shout ecstatically and drive off in a perfectly undamaged vehicle.

Garth Knight was Michael Knight's evil twin - Hasselhoff sporting the evil-twin trademark: a goatee. Garth was the son of the Knight Foundation's founder (whereas Michael was just a cop left for dead and rescued by the Foundation in the pilot), and used a big-@$$ truck called Goliath made of the same armor material as KITT's body.

And KARR had two voices: Peter Cullen in his first appearance, and Paul Frees (the narrator of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride) in his second one.

I just don't want to see any more evil twins. Yeah, yeah, KARR wasn't really evil and all that crap about self-preservation - he was in opposition of the heroes and he was identical to KITT. That speaks for itself.

Honestly, I don't know about the whole "transforming KITT VS evil cars" thing. Seems a bit too much for the formula. Though if his tech were stolen and used to build clones of KITT, perhaps following it all on from the original it might work. Kind of an Iron Man Armour Wars / Highlander "there can only be one" plot where the new Knight Rider and KITT have to hunt down the off-brand models.

David Hasselhoff is in talks to appear on NBC's "Knight Rider," reprising his role as Michael Knight from the original series.

Additionally, "The Young & the Restless" co-star Deanna Russo has landed the female lead in the movie/backdoor pilot opposite fellow soap star Justin Bruening.

"Rider," from UMS and Dutch Oven Productions, is a sequel to the 1980s series that centers on Mike Tracer (Bruening), Michael Knight's son who never knew his dad.

Burned by his love for childhood best friend and one-time girlfriend Sarah Kamen (Russo), Mike is wasting away in Las Vegas when Sarah reappears and is willing to pay off Mike's gambling debt in exchange for help.

Sarah is the brilliant estranged daughter of KITT inventor Charles Kamen, who works as an assistant professor in the engineering department at Stanford. When she receives word from talking-car KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) that her father is missing, she and KITT set out to find and recruit Mike.

oh my, that's horrid. i like shelby mustangs... for what they are! but not as kitt... that exterior is far too STEROIDAL. that firebird a few posts up would be about 5 billion times better.

I agree. The all black is what made KITT so cool. He could hide better in the dark and such. Also, the Mustang just seems so bulk and blocky that it doesn't have that sleek kick ass look. Also the red light bar on the hood looks like it's blocking an air intake. It just looks really dumb.

I also don't like the Camero as KITT for kinda tha same reasons as the Mustang, the front end is too high and blocky. With Bumblebee being used as that car in the movie and possible 2 I doubt they would use it. A Corvette with the low front end would be a nice take if I had to choose from the big 3 automaker models.

it's a hot car and i agree would make a better kitt than the shelby, but i still like the last firebird better. i think the vette is a little too upscale for kitt. good points, though. a base vette isn't even that expensive... they start around 45. it has nothing to do with it, though. my guess is they had a list of candidate cars and it came down to who ponied up the most dough. as with everything.

I have been a Knight Rider fan since the debut watching it with my grandfather and much like Transformers its hard to top or be better than the original and changes made may upset some but im willing to give this a shot. I agree with you Angeltread that the 98-02 Trans Am would have been a fantastic fit but I can also see why they went with a Shelby King Cobra Mustang, aside from the fact that it is one of the baddest Mustangs of all time it is also very duplicateable, they can take even a current V6 and give it the proper body molding and presto you have what appears to be a Shelby and you can do whatever you want to it becasue if this show holds true to its roots this car is going to take a whoopin and when you can lay that whoopin on a $15,000 dollar car that looks like a $45,000 car the math speaks for itself, that is also why they more than likely didn't go with a Vette becasue their isn't that option with a Vette it also would have been a little high brow for KITT but I see where it could work and work well if they weren't going to whoop it like a government mule.....and lastly if I read it properly this is a whole new KITT not just a nameplate for being the Knight Industries Three Thousand but in essence a whole new "being" so who knows we might just get to see and hear from a certain Trans Am at some point, if they are giving the Hoff a cameo why not?

This is what I don't get with car manufacturers. Why the hell should they care about abuse their car models take in TV, movies, and video games? The NFS video games suffered a similar fate when the car guys didn't want their precious car models to take on damage so there were none in the game. Just really baffles me.

Nah. If you're gonna have a pick up, make it artillery support to KITT's fast attack. Go with an F350 dually, with aftermarket heavy duty steel bumpers. With a hard tonneau cover on the bed, that thing could hide enough fire power to take a tank platoon.

The Mustang is cool. Yeah, the OG KITT was a Firebird, but that don't exist anymore. If your pissed because KITT isn't a Firebird, you should also be pissed if KITT ended up a Camaro, Charger, Corvette, Evolution, Civic SI, Marciliago, or a350Z. You may argue that Ford is GMs archrival, but the way I see it, it was the Chevy Camaro that stole sales from the Pontiac Firebird. It's Camaro's fault that the Firebird no longer exist. KITT fans should be more pissed if KITT ended up a Camaro.

Not that I care, I'm a fan of all Mustang/Camaro/Firebird. So, it's to bad GM didn't decide to build a Firebird twin to the new Camaro. It would have been an easy choice. That way Camaro=Bumblebee, Firebird=KITT. Maybe GM did realize they were conibalizing sales from each other.

The Corvette is a status symbol. Nothing more, nothing less. The Mustang is the poor man's muscle car (hence why I've owned three). It's not about price, it's about perception. And unfortunately for GM, the Corvette is no longer the 'every-man's' muscle that it once was. It's a marvelous sports car that has priced itself way out of the range of the average consumer.

I love the voice. That was the only thing I was really worried about. As much of a Knight Rider fan as I am I must say that the original always sounded wimpy. Not saying he was wimpy, just sounded that way. I think the new voice goes with the car.

It's setup to tell the viewer about all the standard "options" the new KITT comes with, voiced by KITT himself. Sounds and looks great!

I hope this turns out well. This franchise has been kicked in the balls way too much in the last 15 years. The commercials do help raise my confidence though.

One thing I want to see is KITT's voice modulator. It should have a design remeniscent of the original. I hope they are just waiting to show that or something. As of right now the interior(as high tech as it does look) still seem a little plain right now.

I hope they have a decent send off fro the old KITT in it too. If they have him mothballed and disassembled in some warehouse like they did in KR2000 I'll probably boycot the rest of it.

I doubt that this will happen as the KR2000 movie explained that his old body was disassembled and scrapped, hence his "brain" unit was put into Michaels' old classic car until he obtained his Pontiac Banshee body. The only possibility we could see is the Pontiac Banshee body (or old KITT in another shell) but I don't think we will see classic KITT. I just hope a cameo of old KITT will be in the show (an updated Goliath would be sweet ass too)!

I seriously doubt that this will aknowledge KR2000. That ugly front wheel drive Banshee-esque kit car they used in that was supposed to have the Knight Industries 4000. With the new KITT being the 3000, it just wouldn't make sense.

I don't think this will follow TKR either, for similar reasons. It just wouldn't make sense to suddenly go back to a single driver and car combination.

I just want ot see Micheal take Devon's old job.

Well at first I thought that the Knight Industries Three Thousand was going to be a whole new character, but after seeing the newest promo with the original KITT looking as if he has been stripped down mayhap the Three Thousand is the KITT from the original just upgraded?????? As long as they keep the black with the tinted lights (keeping the dark mysterious vibe going) like the original KITT had, I think it will work great. Even if it is a Mustang or such. Too bad they don't still make Trans Ams. Something like a black 2002 Trans Am would have been perfect.

This is just a TV movie. Seeing as it airs next month, I imagine it's already in post production. I would imagine that the script was long since finalized, when the strike started.

This is no doubt a back door pilot, so if it goes to a full series, then they're going to have a problem, unless NBC makes a deal with WGA ala Worldwide Pants.
