As an JJ Abrams fan, I've heard the rumblings about the film - but there's no trailer online yet (it should be soon). I found a blog post about it (http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/06/29/jj-abrams-top-secret-trailer-for-cloverfield-in-front-of-transformers/) here, though - for those that are curious.

Apparently it's a giant monster movie with the entire thing shot by digital video by the fleeing citizens. (http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/06/29/jj-abrams-top-secret-cloverfield-movie-trailer-attached-to-transformers/)
It really stole the audience's breath away in my theater, too. Everybody was really into it. The guy behind me said "Oh please, God, let it be Godzilla."
He's going to be disappointed.

As a G-fan I and some of my other friends were just stunned by that trailer....it had a bunch of Giant monster references...
1. That guy was going to JAPAN (of all places).
2. It sounded like footsteps and some faint roars at the time of the blackout.
3. The head of the statue of liberty being thrown across the street.
Any other thoughts about what this movie could be????

Any other thoughts about what this movie could be????Well, there are obviously some big Godzilla overtones, but I'm sure that is intentional. You can’t really do a giant-sized monster movie without thinking about big-G.
I figure this movie will be totally from the first-person perspective, so we won't get any overhead, zoom-in shots of the monster. It will be more like the camera man looks out a window and you see military guys running from a giant tentacle or something. We might not even fully see the monster at all. So just imagine if Godzilla was filmed like Blair Witch.

That would be really hard, the only real way of doing that is have the Cameraman in the opposite part of the Country. The Big-G is huge, you really can't miss him, (well, the Japanese army apparently can.)

It sounds like Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich ruined GODZILLA for people in your area. Those guys should never have been allowed anywhere near the franchise. I really hope the American studios are going to leave it alone.

I think the King Kong remake was a little too long but it was otherwise excellent.
The American Godzilla movie was okay if you look at it as just a monster movie, but it was not Godzilla in anything other than the title.

I totally believe it. IIRC the Devlin-Emmerich GODZILLA broke even domestically so it definitely turned a profit once the money from the DVDS, tie-ins, and overseas BO was tallied up. Worse movies (entertainment-wise) have had sequels made...though I cant honestly think of one offhand.

Hehe. Honestly, that was the only really bad part of the movie. The rest of it was pretty good. The only other thing about it I wasn't too fond of was the lack of the radiation breath weapon.
If they make this, there's only three things I ask for.
No hoards of mini godzillas.
Breath weapon.
Godzilla fighting another giant monster.
Also, I saw the trailer before Transformers. Damn! That looks like one hell of a movie.

Hmm. Interesting, I thought I read before in a recent G-Fan or monster-zero.com (not sure exactly which one), that Sony/Columbia Pictures didn't want to venture into that territory because Godzilla wouldn't be a sustainable film franchise like Spidey is.
Anyways, I hope I get to see the Cloverfield trailer once I see TFs tomorrow.:)

I didn't really get a giant monster movie vibe from this.
Maybe an attack on New York or environmental disaster film.
That generic roar could have easily been an explosion of sorts... even tornados are said to sound like giant demonic trains.
Maybe most of the movie will be in total confusion that we won't know what really happened until the end? Like that show Jericho, but in N.Y.
-Military attack?
-Alien invasion?
-Earthquake/ environmental?
-Gas lines ruptured?
-Giant monster(s)?
-Armageddon again?
Regardless, THAT is what you call a movie teaser!!! Though easily forgotten until someone brings it up. I doubt a movie like this could remain elusive for very long with the interweb still intact. But it would be impressive if Hollywood actually pulls it off.

Now I've seen the teaser, it actually looks pretty good, I'll probably go see it.
But yeah, that was so a pitch-altered Godzilla roar, not Tri-star Godzilla, but the proper Toho Godzilla.
That looks like it has the potential to be awesome.
You're darn right it does.
Actually, what with the first person camera and all, it felt an awful lot like a game. (In a good way.)

I did research on this the morning after seeing Transformers on the 2nd and Wikepedia had the synopsis as a monster called the parasite ravages NY due to all the immorality-The synopsis actually used the words "pre-marital sex"- and whatnot and the reason the parasite is targeting the group of people you see in the trailor is because-now get this-a homosexual was in their group. I shit you not! I researched J.J. Abrams on Wikepedia and there was a link to Cloverfield in blue, I clicked it and at the bottom of the movie description was the synopsis. When I read it I laughed at the stupidity of such a plot because it sounded kind of preachy and I got my wife to come over to the computer and once she read it she couldn't believe that someone would dream up such a hateful plot for a movie. The funny thing is, if you go on Wikepedia and search for Cloverfield, the original synopsis has since been removed/deleted. I would have given anything to have copied and pasted that damn paragraph now because once you read it you would have been like "WTF?!?!?". What I described doesn't even come close to what the synopsis actually was. It was probably the most offensive/ignorant synopsis for a movie I have ever read. It could have been a joke but I guess we will see...

Cloverfield" is the working title of the new J.J. Abrams produced film concerning a creature called "The Parasite". The Parasite was created due to the rampant rise in pre-marital sex and loss of morals in New York. It feeds upon the city, 'purifying' it. Several characters with digital cameras capture the fall of America's Babylon as they try to escape. Unknown to them, a homosexual character is in their midst and puts the entire group in danger as the Parasite is drawn to his immorality and must satisfy it's uncontrollable urge to destroy it.

Well, could it be that the message of the movie that intolerance breeds monsters that kill everybody? That the religious right created a monster (like Mega AIDS) that was supposed to target specific individuals, and their zealous nature doomed the world? Or something like that. Basically, a way for the writers to have him breath fire for the fans without having to write him as actually breathing fire in the movie, which didn't jive with their 'more realistic' Godzilla.

Exactly. Because audiences will accept a giant lizard, but not a giant lizard that breathes fire. But, because Godzilla is supposed to breathe fire they made scenes where it seemed like fire was coming from his mouth.
In one scene, Godzilla's roar somehow has enough force to cause two cars to fly into the air, collide, explode, and then the flames flew forward from the air\gas being expelled from his mouth. (If the roar had that much force, how did Nick Tataupolous ever survive it?)
In the other scene Godzilla's roar somehow ignites sewer gas that is coming off a manhole in the street. Watch the scene in slow motion, the flames originate over the manhole.
Why not just make Godzilla breathe fire?
But, if this movie is a sequel to Godzilla, I would love it if the new Godzilla could breathe fire. The cartoon extension of the American continuity could breathe fire.

I read a piece of the Voltron script on latinoreview.com( that may not be the EXACT name of the site) but the few pages of the script i read kinda align with the trailer! And the description of the Parasite monster is the same way they describe the Robeasts! I'm not the first person to feel this may be a red herring trailer, but like others said, the guy was going to Japan, some people have said they heard the line "its a lion, its huge" and the news reporter does say she heard a thunderous roar. Paramont is the company making Voltron and this movie "Cloverfield" as well! The whole going away party for Rob could just be a ruse, as well as all this talk about handheld cameras. I'm just saying, before everyone hops on the God(please no more US versions)zilla angle, lets keep all our options open! With that said... if anyone wants to see that Voltron script LMK and I'll post the link for it here!

Looked at Wikipedia this evening and it looks like the page got a major text reduction, as non of that was listed, so either someone in the know took it down, or Wiki decided to as to not fan flames.

Still, I've read about five pages of the Voltron script and from whatelse I've been told its set after the war and I think just goes over it in the prolouge.
This movie hasn't even started filming, the trailer was shot before principal photography.

I mean its all just speculation.. all i'm saying is that everything we saw in the Cloverland trailer could very well just be a glimpse of what the war was... It is called the One day war right Starscream17? So technically what we are seeing as in the trailer and is being passed off as the actual movie could just be the prolouge and the movie picks up after that, thus the secrecy??Huh.. huh? Again.. all just crazy fan talk.. for all we know this movie really could be about a parasite feeding off of moral decay in NY, and chasing a gay guy in the group, all while being filmed on digi cams ala Blair Witch (hey i didn't make that up, str8 from Wikipedia)... Who knows at this point!? I say just bring on the ice skating baby Godzillas and give the people what they really want!!!!! LOL

From http://tigerkakke.livejournal.com/268515.html#cutid1 about Ethanhasswasright.com
And when trying to access the flash-based game with a browswer that doesn't support it, the following message appears instead of the game:
"...war came, no longer from the elemental nor from the stars rain of fire. The world was again remade, and the glow was as the coming sun upon the Earth. The children of the gods were again too few, scattered and divided and among them walked the ancients and those whose thoughts were not as to the towers and the marvels but to the End and the destruction of Earth and to the fires from which nothing could escape. "
Hmm..
I eventually figure out all the other puzzles just to hear what this guy has to say, which is what you all should do too cause only the 1st and 5th videos are left up on YouTube. The rest were taken down by Paramount, along with most of the trailer videos (I'll be surprized if the trailer is still up by the time people read this in the morning. Check www.thegaminglife.net if it's down.
The following clues were revealed at the Ethan was Wrong blog earlier today and yesterday:
"The great war of the gods will come upon the earth; the fires and terror of their rule will return for a time, but the children of the gods may be thus prepared, themselves aware and powerful…they may stand along side the gods not as equals, but as allies, feared and ready."
"The great cycle, the beginning and the end, turns just as the plans of the gods turn once again to the world of men.
And they will come upon the earth only after the skies rain down fire and the very earth itself is made to shake and the great cities of men fall into ruins. Their plans are set and their purpose is clear; they come for war."
After reading all this talk about a war between gods and humans gave me a huge fucking erection so I went and grabbed a copy of the bible to look up anything with the numbers 1-18-08 or the time 12:36 from the picture. And low and behold:
"I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak..." Matthew 12:36

The puzzle symbols are apparently sanskrit. And Ethan Haas is an anagram for Satan Ah He. I don't know the connection yet.
I kind of thought there might be a TF link to all of this. The woman who is credited as Socialite #3 in TF is also in this new film. PLUS what about the symbols on Prime' and Meg's heads in their faceoff picture? They look very sanskritish. I doubt there is a connection, but a giant monster? Those similar symbols? Prob no connection, but cool to speculate about it.

Doubtful, but don't expect to get many clear shots of the beast, if any. This film seems to be working on a stealth production, without name actors, and a release date in what is typical the cinematic equivilent of the Bermuda Triangle. FX budget is likely to be thin. Then add in the probably tie in with Cthulhu.... Let's just say that if you've ever read any Lovecraft, you'd understand why a clear photograph should be out of the question.

Try reading Lovecraft. Then you'll really be lost. Man can spend multiple paragraphs describing something as indescribable (and a thesaurus would be handy to have nearby). Now this is not a criticism - it's a neat trick that he pulls off unbelievably well, and perfectly conveys the dread he wants to inspire. But it's not something that can be easily duplicated. Much like the terrors in his stories, Lovecraft can only really be understood by experience - and even then you're pretty likely to walk away not quite knowing what you experienced..

Don't be too sure. Paramount was going after them too. My money is that JJ is playing coy, and will be able to justify the comment later by parsing the term "us." Clearly there is something conspiratorial about this, and coming out and admitting this is part of official marketing pretty much kills that vibe.

The Japan thing could just as well be a nod to the classic home of films such as this (almost certainly why they made Slusho Japanese), not because Rob works for Slusho.
I don't see any sign that Rob isn't all that suprised by the explosion. He seems fairly uptight and confused the minute that the "earthquake" occurs, as you would expect for someone on the perimeter watching a disaster, rather than being in it.
As for the explosion, the implication I get is that it is caused by the creature, not some deliberate, predictable act.
Reading the Slusho story certainly seems like it could tie into Cthulhu (though he's more cephalopod than cetacean). It seems to me that the implication is the ingredient will turn people into monsters (or perhaps A person into A monster).
A comment by Devin on CHUD makes me question whether it really is Cthulhu as opposed to just another giant monster flick.

from http://www.trailerspy.com/2007/07/08/a-trailerspy-exclusive-comments-from-a-cloverfield-1-18-08-insider/
Man, this Cloverfield thing has been a wild ride these past few days. Ever since the mysterious trailer premiered before the Transformers opening (see the trailer here, by the way), the internet has been hysterical trying to figure out what this movie is really all about.
So far, the only thing we know for sure is that JJ Abrams is an absolute genius. Other than that, information is sketchy at best. The movie’s “official” website is www.1-18-08.com and now features two photographs and nothing else. The “working” title for the film is Cloverfield, but that will suposedly change. And there are two other mysterious sites that seem to be related to the project: EthanHaasWasRight.com and EthanHaasWasWrong.blogspot.com. The first site has a series of five puzzles that you have to solve, at which point you get to see a series of cryptic videos (but why solve the puzzles when you can just check out the videos on YouTube?), and the second site has some strange ramblings that are in the same vein as the videos.
On our site, as on many others, the debate has raged on. A lot of people seem to think that this movie will be a Godzilla remake. Some think it’ll be some sort of Lost spin-off. And a lot of others think it has something to do with a horror/sci fi writer named H.P. Lovecraft. Personally, though, I don’t see why it’s such an odd idea that Abrams has simply come up with a completely original idea for a new movie.
Anyways, to help us answer some of these questions (or maybe just raise a few more), we’ve got a new addition to add to the puzzle. TrailerSpy has been fortunate enough to come across an inside source on the project. He didn’t give us his name (and I’m withholding the nickname he gave himself for his own protection), but I can confirm that he is an actor working on the mysterious Cloverfield project, which he says is currently shooting in L.A. Apparently they’re being as secretive to the talent as they are to the public, but the info he does provide is still pretty juicy.
Here are his full comments:
“I’m working on this shoot, and even we don’t know what it is. Here is what we DO know however:
1) “some” inside source said something about us being on 6th/Main st in downtown LA, true; However, we did not do anything on a fire escape 8 floors up. Everything was shot street level… and nothing on any fire escape.
2) **edited out as it may expose “me” too much**
3) On a take in the scene you all saw (the trailer) at + 30 seconds after impact movie time, just a couple of us were told by Mr Reeves that we are seeing a giant foot stomp down (this is at the point where the tower explodes). Not Godzilla, but it is interesting…
4) Will the Military be firing? One of the Hummers in the downtown shoot had a 50cal mounted on the roof and the gunner was aiming up into the air down the block. He kept swiveling a bit here and there (as directed to do so), but if he is supposed to be firing, it will have to be CGI’d in later as not even blanks were being used. Not pertinent, but perhaps somewhere in the future of this, it will provide a better clue for us to solve this enigma.
Personally, I like that Ethan Haas thing…it kinda makes sense (to me at least) from some of the dialogue I’ve heard.
On one of the nights, the #1 principle was injured during a take and had to be taken for stitches to his head (10 stitches, if anyone is counting), as the other principles “watched” the camcorder playback of the “monster”, some of the verbage they stated could lead to this ethan thing…at least in my head.
The only things we do know is that this is set to be Paramounts blockbuster for next year.. a blockbuster that opens in January is either bad timing or this thing will really set the world on fire. Judging by the amount of interest generated merely by an untitled trailer… I think paramount is onto something.
Would love to say more, but NDA is a bitch and I can only go as far as that…but to be honest, there really isn’t a whole lot more to say.
If you want to see this being filmed on location(*s) and live in the LA area, just watch for the shoot direction signs labeled “Slusho”.
oh, and that brings me to another oddity: The ID tags for the shoot on the trucks say “Slusho: You can’t eat more than 6″ and a drawing of a slurpee like drink.
wtf? Would love to hear people idea of what exactly that means???”
Hmmm... this connects "Slusho" with Cloverfield, and actually provides some interesting tidbits.

Well didn't we hear that the monster is some sort of parasite? My guess is that this ingredient the original founder of Slusho was looking for is the said parasite. She mysteriously disappears. Her sucessor enters in science instead and finds something at the bottom of the sea. And Slusho lives on as a drink company.
My guess is that the parasite is the ingredient in slusho.
It makes their drinks so tasty and good.
People cannot stop drinking Slusho drinks because of this said ingredient.
The sucessor of Slusho had a dream about eating the ingredient and becoming a big whale.
Possibly he eats it and it turns him into a monster?
-Or-
What if the ingredient in Slusho is the eggs/babies of the said monster.
(Think the "popplers" episode from Futurama.)
And the momma/monster had arisen from the deepest depths looking for revenge and seeking to wreak havoc on humanity.
Just a theory.
Again, many people think it's either:
-Godzilla
-Voltron (and the monster we hear is the Spacebeast)
-H.P.Lovecraft's (The Call of) Cthulhu
-Or an new idea from J.J. Abrams that is an AMERICAN giant monster flick

I think they don't have enough clues in place yet.
Tons of buzz on the internet, thousands of people sleuthing, but no findings in the last day.
So, methinks, the studio wasn't quite ready enough, and will be slowly adding more clues over time.
But for now I am tired of looking for leads where no leads exist.

Half life movie?
NO
the game designers are not gonna give rights for it, since all the scripts that were send to them "sucked" in their own words.
this movie i think will: skip if you wnat no spoiler
0vbiuosly it will be a combo of: Cam-pov, end of the world/total mayhen-style-scenario, giant-monster-thing-you-never-get-a-good-look-at.
and an ending in which before the cam guy finally confronts the monster, the battery dies.

You see, that's the beauty of it. If you don't know what it looks like, it's very form is left up to your imagination. The unknown is far more frightening than the clearly stated.
I imagine the movie will be the same way, we'll probably never get a good look at the damn thing, just bits - little, horrendous bits. Isn't that actually more terrifying when you think about it?

I hope JJ won't chicken out and show a clear image of the entire monster before the movie, as well. This is one of those movies where you're better off not knowing anything about it, save for the basic backstory (that suspicious Slusho and Apacolypse stuff).
EDIT: Oh, just remembered this (read it yesterday). It looks like JJ is disappointed in 'us' for not figuring out anything else then "Slusho". Here's the biggest hints from the trailer:
1. The roar
2. Slusho
3. "It's alive, it's huge!"

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33332 Im not a fan of Scuzzlebutt--aka Harry Knowles--and dont normally read the stuff he passes off as news but I have to agree with some of the comments made in the article. People have really gotten too precious about some of their own ideas (Ethan Haas, Lost, Voltron, etc) and are going to be sorely disappointed when they find out theyre wrong. I never could understand why people put so much stock in guesses and theories. I have no problem with speculation but to use it as a substitute for hard facts is just going too far.
Im just hoping for a good old fashioned monster stomp with a camcorder POV. Preferably something better than Devlin and Emmerichs GODZILLA.

I think it is a Giant robot...something about that whole "Bad Robot Productions" thing gave me a lil hint towards it. Watching the teaser when they see the first explosion is what gave me the idea towards it being that as well, because if G-zilla had hit a building it would more or less crumble...not go exploding high above the building line, and go flying at least a mile away. I would like to see what a movie about a giant robot terrorizing the city would look like...

Not to mention that the poster indicates the creature might be aquatic.
So, given that it is aquatic and has three claws, it could only be two things: a completely new monster or Cthulhu. Though we still need more clues.

Some major updates on both 1-18-08.com and Slusho.
1-18-08 has been updated with the fifth photo. Not only that, but you can now flip all five pictures over and look at the back. The two party photos each have a message on the back, revealing some people's names. To flip a picture over, you first need to have it at the top of the pile. To do that, you need to slide it out completely from under the rest. Once that's done, you then just quickly jerk the picture in one direction and then back in the opposite direction. You can do this in eight directions.
Slusho has updated with the remaining three pages. The Store is a real online store, where you can buy Slusho shirts and hats. Happy Talk is a bunch of quotes from "customers". Many of which are really weird. Flavors is pretty funny. The flavors are portrayed as robots. You move sliders under each one to determine how much of each flavor you want. When you're ready, they all go into the giant cup and the cup transforms into a robot. Each flavor adds color to a part of the robot. selecting them all, colors the whole thing. It's pointless, but neat. lol
There's also some updates about the movie from JJ Abrams himself, from SDCC.
- He's been wanting to make a monster movie for years.
- He wants this to be our Godzilla. He wants us to have our own giant monster movie.
- He doesn't want it to be like Godzilla or King Kong. People love those two. He wants this to be "insane and intense."
- Target release date is in January.
- Between now and then, we'll be getting the following.
The real title.
The real poster.
The real trailer.
To see footage from the movie.

I'm pretty excited in a way that someone is making a monster movie, in which it is confirming from different sources. And that their trying to make this not as a sequel to the horrid remake of Godzilla in America (sfx were awesome, but the monster sucked). If this movie is a cult classic it would be up there with Godzilla, but I have this bad feeling that it won't reach the status of Big G, it might be close to either third or fourth after King Kong or Gamera.

The earlier Godzilla films, especially the original Gojira, attempted to portray Godzilla as a frightening, nuclear monster. Godzilla represented the fears of many Japanese of a repetition of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
