LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The upcoming fourth season of Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" will be its final one after all.
After months of speculation, the show's producers are set to make the announcement at a press conference Friday.
Ending "Battlestar" with the upcoming 22-episode fourth season was a creative decision made by the hit show's executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick.
"This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and, finally, an end," Eick and Moore said in a statement Thursday. "Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end, and we've decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there -- we're going out with a bang."
The fourth and final season of "Galactica" will kick off in November with "Razor," an extended two-hour episode, with the rest of the season slated to run beginning in early 2008.
Sci Fi executive vp original programming Mark Stern said the channel's brass "respect the producers' decision to end the series."
For months, Sci Fi had dispelled rumors about "Battlestar" ending its run after the fourth season.
A couple of weeks ago, one of the show's stars, Edward James Olmos, was quoted as saying that the upcoming batch of episodes were definitely the last ones. Sci Fi issued a statement denying such a decision had been made.
Fingers crossed they don't decide to remake Galactica 1980 afterwards...

Galactica 1980? Was that to the original BSG as The Ropers were to Three's Company?

Actually, I think that's good news. The overall arc of the narrative, in my opinion, fits well with ending the series soon.
I love Battlestar Galactica and I think Eick & Moore can do no wrong. It'll be a whole lot of fun to see how all our questions are answered.

Galactica 1980 is the only SFish show that i've ever stopped watching after a single episode. That personally speaks volumes about it considering that I sat througth all of Voyger, Enterprise, Space Above and Beyond, Space Precinct and Invasion as well as the first dozen or so episodes of Stargate Atlantis and Andromeda.

Oh dear god, the humanity! That's the show everyone accuses me of liking when they find out I'm a fan of (classic) BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. "Oh, you mean the one with the flying bikes", "the one when they're on Earth" etc.
I just cannot convince them it's an utterly different entity. I was trying to forget... why did you remind me, dammit? WHY??

But yeah, pity to see Galactica going. Hopefully Caprica will be able to fill it's shoes.

This shouldn't really surprise anybody. Edward James Olmos and Katee Sackhoff told everybody at the Saturn Awards that this would be the last season. I think it's a good thing and should make for one hell of a final season. Plus, at least we got a 4th season. It was touch and go there for awhile.
People complain about all the filler episodes in season 3, but even still, the filler episodes are better than 99% of everything else on telelvision.

I don't get the hate for 1980. I loved it as a kid (and we saw Galactica and 1980 back to back constantly in NZ), and got to see the entire run again a few years ago on pay TV and loved it again. It was no more dodgy than any of the other shows around at the time or the few years before it - Incredible Hulk, Buck Rogers, Man from Atlantis, any of them. And in terms of story quality, it wasn't much different from the original series, either. More concessions to a smaller budget, but also less reuse of the same Viper fight and Raider sweep across Galactica that we saw umpteen million times.
BSG, though, sad to see it end after series 4, but once they did the finale to 3, I thought bingo, next season is the end. I'm definitely looking forward to it, and any possible spinoffs they do (Caprica, for one).

I loved BSG for the raw feel it had, and although it was DRASTICALLY different from the original I watched as a kid, I loved the look of it. I'm glad to see it ending so short and soon as it will be an awesome boxed set.
I don't buy DVDs for TV shows UNTIL they are over as I have limited DVD space. I also have select shows on DVD, and BSG will be mine. I'm still waiting for SciFi channel to release Season 4 of Tripping the Rift on DVD and continue with Season 5 this fall. I don't know what it is with SciFi channel, but their DVD distribution and release is hit and miss.

Gasp! BSG is doing a Walker, Texas Ranger and a Xena. Ending before it gets itself canceled! Amazing...
Almost every Sci-Fi movie or TV Show has flying motorcycles in them (what they call them, however, is another story), doesn't make it cool.
Anyhow, I stopped watching BSG when they killed Lucy Lawless. Injustice I tell you! Injustice! I finally got watch something with her in it (besides CBS B-movie "Locusts!" --- I missed "Vampire Bats!") post-Xena, using her New Zealand Accent, then she goes and gets her character killed. That sucks!
Anyhow, I've seen a little of the elder BSG (whether its the one you speak of or another, assuming there was more than two out in the 80's) and I like this carnation better, despite the confusion that washes over me, given that I don't watch every episode unless it has the aformentioned actress in it.

Har har. I thought they shut down all of Number 3/D'Anna Biers when she decided to go against orders?
Anyhow, I did find out that "According to Ronald D. Moore at the 2007 Comiccon, D'Anna will appear in Season Four for episodes 10-12/13."
Yay! I'm gonna watch it again and be utterly confused! :drunk When does it come back on? This year or next?
Yeah, the Cylons "boxed" all the Threes (Lucy Lawless), 'cause one version of her was becoming a little psycho, killing herself repeatedly in order to discover the nature of the Final Five. Harsh, but that's the Cylons for you.

I believe it's set in the time frame that you have mentioned (between season 2 and 3) however it also references things prior to season 2 on Battlestar Pegasus at the start of the second Cylon war (which is the start of the new series) and I believe is also has some major impact on the fourth season as well (in fact Razor is the first two episodes of season 4's 22 episodes)
I'd probably recommend watching it after season 3, but will know for definite tomorrow.
Though it should be noted that the DVD is released here in the UK on Boxing Day (yay!)

Well her non FTL ship managed to catch up to the fleet after they'd jumped a few times. So either she's a cylon, or somehow is in league with a group of cylons, or there's some other group out there that picked her up and gave her a grand tour of the galaxy. And that last option, while possible, I don't think is going to happen, as there's no real basis in the old series, is there?

The producers said they wanted to use the "Ship of light" from the old show. Which saved Starbuck from certain death and dropped him somewhere else. As he was important to the future of humanity. That's what they want to use as the way Kara survived and showed up where she did.

The original Starbuck had a destiny intertwined with the Ship Of Lights, crewed by beings known as Seraphs, who essentially were angels. Starbuck eventually joined them I think.

My final opinion of this show... it should have been called another title, it has little to do with Battlestar Galactica. I consider the original show to be superior. This new show, shy of the old style Cylon cameos(of which were just for looks, the new show is a separate timeline) has zippo to do with the old show in the end.
The original was about hope and human survival. The new show was about thinly disguised political commentary. I didn't are about any of the characters, nor did most of them seem to care about the "mission". If the "Cylons"(humans instead of SFX) had wiped the humans out, I wouldn't have cared. I don't blame anyone for shooting Adama- I would have too. Baltar was an incompetent liability who should have been pushed out an airlock from the start. In the end it was a new show with an old title, and I honestly doubt Ron Moore was a fan of the original series.
I was never clear on the Cylon's motivation either- they hate humans for buildign and "enslaving" them... but go out of their way to appear and act human.
And perhaps the biggest gripe point, which isn't specific to it being BSG as just the fact it's set in space... we never saw any aliens. Just humans and Cylons. Old BSG had aliens, lots of them and some were rather convincing. I hate shows set in space like this that have only humans. It defeats the purpose. Was their budger so low they couldn't paint someone green for an episode? Though I guess if it was set on Earth, James Cameron would have sued.
I am aware I am going agsinst popular opinion with this show, but I hated it. I'll stick with House and Dexter for my regular TV viewing.

Is any of that even relevant? It's just the same old "reboot isn't the same as/similar enough to blah blah blah" rhetoric that fans of original properties seem to rant on about whenever there is a shift to a new medium or a reboot.
I bet if they kept the show the same as in setting, turn of events and plot but changed all the relevant names, the producers would still end up getting sued by the I.P. owners of BSG who would no doubt win.

A quickie answer on this point. The Cylons are out to replace Humans in the new BSG because their religion says that they the superior beings, not humans.
