The title for the new film series is "Evangelion Shin Gekijou Ban", it will consist of 4 parts with the first part arriving in Japanese theaters in early summer, 2007. Staff include General Supervisor: Hideaki Anno, Director: Tsurumaki Kazuya , Character Design: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Mecha Design: Ikuto Yamashita, Animation Production: Khara (Color) Studio. The scenario of the 1st part will be written by Hideaki Anno with storyboard by Shinji Higuchi. Key points of a supposed interview which may or may not appear in the forthcoming edition of Newtype attributed to Toshimichi Ohtsuki of King Records have also been circulating.
According to that information:
-The content is quite different though the time base of the story is the same as the original TV series.
- It will be a remake, however, it is not a re-creation but a "new work".
- The approach will be different than what Tomino-san did with the Gundam Z New Translation films, there will apparantly be a large amount of new material.
- Even if the TV series has not be seen, the viewer will be able to enjoy it. Though the content becomes easy, it is not redundant to those already familiar with the series.
- The technique that purposely scatters difficult words and phrases will not be used any longer.
- As an antithesis to current animation industry segments. It is an attitude on the production side to pull the act in the age that started from Eva.

This is pretty cool. Hopefully it's not all dorky happy like that manga that's out now.
I think I'm going to have to get around to rewatching the original one of these days... it's been lingering in my mind a lot lately.

Definately would like for the animation to be increased. But as far as goes psychobabble...that's what made the show interesting in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting they get rid of the psychobabble completely, but the original was far too indulgent with letting characters ramble and babble (a problem that got worse when the animation budget declined and they still had to fill 22 minutes an episode). There are a number of speeches/monologues in the original that could have been half as long (at least) and a number of speeches/monologues that would have been better replaced with fully animated flashback sequences to give the show a faster pace. The weird psychobabble was definitely part of Evangelion's charm, but the original took it too far, IMO.

You've got a good point. Though it was interesting to listen to and understand how each character changed as the story went. Towards the end, it just got to be too much. Half the time, the show wasn't keeping my attention enough to understand what they were going on about, so at the end of the eppisode, I sat and went "wtf just happened?"
But, then again, I was mostly in it for the giant robot-things they like to call the EVAs...and my personal favorite part of the series was the movie The End of Evangelion....Just 'coz...XD

Here's what Anime News Network says about it:According to the October issue of Newtype (Japan) (On sale September 10), four new Evangelion movies are in the works. The four movies will include a prequel, a mid-series movie, a sequel and a "final" movie. The prequel movie is due out early summer 2007.
While the new story will be set during the same time frame as the original TV series, Newtype states that it will be an entirely new project, not be a remake or improvement of any sort. Newtype also mentions that viewers will not need to have already seen previous Evangelion material in order to understand and enjoy the new movies.
Hideaki Anno will write the scenario for the first movie and will be the general director and manager for the entire project. Kazuya Tsurumaki will direct the movies while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will provide character designs and Ikuto Yamashita will provide mechanical designs. Shinji Higuchi will provide storyboards for the first movie.
Khara, a new studio that shares office space with Gainax, was recently set up and is seeking production staff to work on Anno's new project.Assuming this is correct, that means we get what may be four stand-alone stories set before, during, and after the original anime series, not an entirely new timeline from scratch. It could be cool, but if that's correct it will be weird for End of Evangelion to not actually be the end of Evangelion.

I liked the psycho crap... at the beginning of the show. Toward the end it got too much, and couple that with the massively cut back animation and we have a recipe for disaster.
Having said that the new release of the original series is supposed to be fixing that (Evangelion: platinum). When the box set out for this comes out at the end of this year I'll be getting a set... I've got the series on VHS. (VHS? Whats that?)

It gave the series character and it delivered a message that a lot of anime fans and other geeks need to hear... if only more of them understood it. It's my hope that this new Evangelion movie series tries to communicate with clarity what the original tried to say but mostly confused people. It would be a shame to drop that element completely. That would be like the body of Evangelion without a soul.

Oh I agree completely, I actually really liked episodes 25 and 26, alot. I still watch that when I get depressed, really pick me up. I will say I never liked Asuka until the movies, she really kicked alot of ass when fighting the unit 5's.

Amateur. When it was comming out on VHS, whenever a new cassette came out, I watched the whole series through again, before watching the new episodes.
Then with how many people I showed the series to in college, I swear I must have watched Evangelion begining to end at least 60 times, possibly 80. Mind you we watched in marathons. Whenever we introduced someone to it, we made them watch it all in one sitting. I guess it was our little groups version of hazing.
Still Evangelion is no where near as messed up as the Revolutionary Girl Utena Movie, not even a bottle of whiskey will make that thing make sense.
But less I digress, More Evangelion makes me a very happy happy happy person.

Shinji: "I'm kinda hungry. What's open?"

Shinji: "Crap. Say, where'd all this meat come from?"
Asuka: "..."
Shinji: "No, seriously. I just need some bread and matches, then I can --"
Asuka: "YOU DISGUST ME."
Seriously, there's no way to make that horrible ending any better, without scrapping it entirely. If we're lucky, maybe they will.

It's not like Evangelion is something you can jump right in the middle of.That's why I'm thinking the middle movies happen concurrently to the TV series as a kind of side-story. It could easily start from the same backstory events that started the events of the show and lead up to the same ending, and then continue.Seriously, there's no way to make that horrible ending any better, without scrapping it entirely. If we're lucky, maybe they will. The world's not over at the end. It's in the very early stages of being reborn. Life and civilisation are coming back, they just haven't done so yet. Anyway, they already said it's not a rewrite, so changing the ending is unlikely. Instead I guess we'll get to see how the world is rebuilt, which a lot of people have wondered about.

I have to say, watching the original DVD release, then watching the same eppisodes on the platinum DVDs, there is significant improvement. Not only in the animation quality, but with the sound. In the original, all of the sounds, music, and voices were all on one track. Now they went back and sepparated the different parts into different levels, giving a more realistic quality to the sounds. And making it sound awsome in surround sound!
All the last eppisodes made me do was go "WTF!?" while looking for something to make the headache go away. IMO, End of Evangelion actualy made more sense to me than most of the series did. And I loved the fact that EOE was Anno's response to fans that hated the end of the series. Killing off all of humanity except for a whiny emo boy and an angry red-head was an awsome "F-YOU" to all the haters...XD

I have to agree; dumbing down the series (aka making it straightforward) is going to hurt it a lot. I don't need to have all of my anime explained to me to the last detail; that's why I love Lain so much. I really hope they don't screw it up too much; though super eva marathons are gonna be a lot of fun: 26 episodes and 6 movies = bathroom break of death.

First of all, what do you mean by stay in the dark?
And I guess it gives us something slightly different to watch than just seeing the same Evas from the series. Merchandising is most definitely the main reason though.

I'm probably opening a can of worms here, but it has to be said...
"Fly Me To The Moon" is probably my favorite song ever, and hurt my ears to hear anyone other than Frank Sinatra sing. I couldn't stand those endless remixes on the TV show and on the OSTs. That said...the version in that new trailer is probably my favorite non-Sinatra mix of that song.
Shrug.

Granted Im a sucker for happy endings/somewhat happy.
Macross Zero was meh, but Im there for the mecha not the story-or thats what I convinced myself
and besides if he makes it bad I can ignore it ever existed as simple as that.

Dubs > Subs, FTW
Anyway, the new trailer looks good, although I'm concerned about the amount of compression they'll be doing for this film. It looks like they're going to have to introduce NERV, the Evangelions and most of the principle characters, plus bringing in Kaworu and fighting three Angels. Granted, I don't know how long each of these movies is going to be, but it seems a lot to cram into a single film.
Whoa, Kaworu's gonna be introduced this early?
TBH, I'm glad they're bringing him in earlier in this version. I thought one of the major flaws of the original anime is that they rushed the part with Kaworu; it didn't have the impact it could have if he were introduced earlier and they had sufficient time to develop his relationship with both Shinji and the viewer.

04-27-2008, 05:28 AM
I've had the priviledge of watching it on the big screen when it was shown in selected theatres in my country for a limited time. I must say I'm mostly impressed by the updated visuals. The first part, for the most part doesn't cover any new ground and is rather noticably compressed, but the final battle is truly a sight to behold, and while it is still pretty close to the original anime version of the battle, there are enough divergences to make it unique.
Judging from the preview for the next movie, the divergences between the new movies and the series will become alot more apparent, with whole new EVA units being introduced as well!
